Triple Post Spectacular:

If the Johnnies lose up North on Saturday, does the faithful start to fear a 5-5 or losing season?  They'd be big underdogs to the Tommies and Royals.  Gustavus just went down to Waverly and nearly knocked off Wartburg.  St. Olaf, Augsburg or Carleton might also be up to the challenge.

If the Johnnies go 0-3 I fear a record worse than 5-5.

Based on the the Westminster/Northwestern result this past Sat., I'm not sure SJU would win the UMAC. :'(

I did a little research and found SJU's 4 loss (or worse) seasons under John.  I think I got them all but I may have missed one or two.  Believe it or not John has a bad season or two every decade...so I guess we're due for laying an egg.  There's also been a number of the 3 loss seasons.  Johs won't admit it but his goal is 500 wins which means he needs to last another 3 or 4 or seasons (or 5 or 6 if things get real bad).

1997 (6-4, 6-3 MIAC)
1986 (4-4-1, 4-4-1 MIAC)
1983 (7-4, 7-2 MIAC)
1973 (4-4, 3-4 MIAC)
1968 (6-4, 4-3 MIAC)
1967 (3-5, 3-4 MIAC)
1956 (3-4-1, 2-4-1 MIAC)

For those of you that like beer...I think there's a couple of you out there.  A friend of mine posted a link to this on Facebook.  Apparently there's a new brewpub coming to Minneapolis.  They're using a CSA and Co-op model to finance the operation.  If you ever wanted to have ownership in a brewery here's your chance.

Did I mention that your share(s) include free beer for life?
Check out the links below.

I wonder if the coaching staff are pulling out their hair wondering what to do or if they understand the issues well and have a good plan to approach them. The most troubling part of the QB shuffle three years ago (yes, yes) for me was that it appeared the coaching staff was at a loose end on what to do about settling down the offense. I sure hope the defense coaching staff are not in a similar position.

I would suspect that shuffling in D-linemen or Linebackers is not as disruptive as changing a QB every play or series. You will often see QBs shuffle in plays when there are two in a battle for the position. You see this mostly in HS, but occasionally you'll see it in D1. What's the old saying? If you have two QBs,you really have none.

I would love to be a mouse in the corner at film session tonight. :o

I'm a pessimist, but in thinking back, we started the 2001 at 0-2 with losses to Eau Claire and St. Olaf(!).  We then rattled off 11 wins before a semi-final loss to Mount Union.  So, while I'm thinking the worst, I keep telling myself that things could still turn around.  Still, giving up 31 in the first half... :'(

That Olaf loss at home was tough. A LOT of beer was consumed that night!  :-\

I'm an optimist, for the most part.

You guys weren't dominated in either of those losses.  You also had Blake Elliot.  Don't see anyone on this team that can be such a difference maker to turn things around.  And I suspect UWEC is a middle of the pack, at best WIAC team.  Their conference record last year was 2-5.

I'd have to question how many of Boyle's games you saw.

I've been to practically every game for the last 14 years and I saw Boyle many times.  He was decent but he was not AK or Keating or Denne or Linneman or even Stanger.  A good QB but a step or two below those guys without question.

No, he wasn't any of those guys.  I don't know your knowledge base for critiquing quarterbacks but Joe Boyle was way more than decent.

I appreciate your perspective and we'll just have to leave it at that.  But, here's some history.  For a program that has been (at least 1989 forward Rick Dougherty was also pretty good in the early/mid 80's) known for its passing prowess 15,18 and 21 passing TD's and 186.9/160.9 average passing yards per game would be a drop off from previous years.  He did at least have 273 passing yards average per game by his senior year.    Nothing against him - like I said he was good not great, in my opinion - but St. John's has not had an aggressive and feared passing game for awhile now.

I don't think, chewey, that your argument is supported as strongly by the stats as you say it is.  '08 and '09 were obviously down, but '10 is pretty damn good.  Maybe short on the TD's side, but they did a whole lot of running that year with the 500 yards per game benchmark they set so I bet there are a few more running TD's than normal.
