I admit that I'm a Royal plowhorse, used to moving the chains with a strong running game.  Given that perspective, nearly 250 yards and 3 TD's per game for 10 years looks like plenty of passing offense to me.

I don't think, chewey, that your argument is supported as strongly by the stats as you say it is.  '08 and '09 were obviously down, but '10 is pretty damn good.  Maybe short on the TD's side, but they did a whole lot of running that year with the 500 yards per game benchmark they set so I bet there are a few more running TD's than normal.

That's a good point, Oz.  There was a whole lot of adjusting going on too, after Alex K and Kyle Gearman left -- more heavy reliance on the option maybe?  I certainly don't want to scum the guy.  He worked hard, was tough and played through a lot of injuries too and he did a good job for SJU.  It just seems like the passing was perhaps less emphasized while he was there or something.  I must say given what we all saw last week, I wish he was still there.  But, I am sure the QB's and the offense will get back on track.  There's an adjustment factor after Boyle too.  Be interesting up in Moorhead this weekend against a tough Cobber team.

FWIW though the SIDs have picked EauClaire to finish in the bottom half of the WIAC I think they are still a very solid team.  The preseason picks by the SIDs mimics last year's final standings to a team.  In other words the SIDs don't think any team will finish higher than they did last year.  I don't follow that line of thinking.  Eau Claire returns 19 letter winners on both sides of the ball including all 11 offensive starters and 8 of 11 on defense.  It's an experienced team and I think they'll finish with an improved record from last year.   When it's all said and done a loss to them, albeit a monkey stomping, may not look as bad as it does at this time.  I guess time will tell.

I don't know if it's sheer boredom, or my desire to shake up the conversation bit. But, Jamestown College out of Jamestown, ND played UW-Stout tough, they have a game against UW-Lacrosse in a few weeks. They also have a solid hoops team, Concordia-Moorhead proximity, exist in a Northfield/St. Peter/Collegeville/St. Joe's sized community, are nicknamed "The Jimmies," right off of I-94, and are considering a move to D-III.

Obviously, a pre-requisite to being in the MIAC is the "M," but I think they'd be an interesting fit. Plus it'd give me another UST viewing option.

Okay, enough of me dreaming, it'll never happen. Just saying, they'd be more competitive than the other Minnesota alternatives.

Intriguing.  I don't think the MIAC schools would go for the added 100 miles from Moorhead.
p.s.  St. Peter and Northfield are booming metropolises compared to the St. Joe/Collegville miniplex.

I just watched a few post-game interviews from the SJU-UWEC game on the SC Times website and liked this quote from John Gagliardi:

If they go DIII, it'd have to be to the UMAC.

Not a Minnesota school. And not a good academic fit for the MIAC, IMO.

Plus, I like having only 9 football schools. The two non-conference games are a nice way to keep things interesting. Personally, regarding a massive rebound in Mac's program, I'd like them to stay independent in football and keep things just how they are.

Yeah, I hear that. Of course, I think their reluctance stems from the UMAC not being a good fit for them. They're a bit of a tweener.

I do hear the extra travel bit, the love of two non-conference games, and I'm sorry I called St. Joe/ St. Joe's.

Side Tuesday, extra boredom bit: If DIII went super conference style, a la FBS, what would you guys like to see? (In the alternate universe where things like travel costs are not considered)

A few early season match-ups that might provide some insights on the strength of UWEC and the MIAC.
Cobbers host the Johnnies this weekend and the Toms the next.  Seemingly two tough tasks for Concordia.  Will be interesting to see which team gives the Cobbers the biggest test.
Eau Claire gets UWRF on the 24th...outcome should give some indication about the strength of the BluGolds in comparison to the UST.  The Tommies seem to have handled the Falcons quite easily last weekend...at one point they held a 31-3 lead.
UST get the Oles this weekend.  The Oles were tested by Simpson this past weekend whereas Bethel pounded the Storm on opening day.  My guess is that Tom throttle Ole.

SJU will struggle against the Cobbers.  First road game of the year and a lot of issues to iron out.  I'd bet against the Johnnies in this one...please don't take away my SJU Alumni membership.
Eau Claire beats River Falls this week...I'll predict the the BluGolds finish second (or third...La Crosse looks pretty strong) in the WIAC.  Any squad that handles like Eau Claire did(albeit a depleted SJU squad) has to be good.

SJU
9/10 vs. UW-Eau Claire • L, 47-19
9/17 at Concordia-Moorhead

UWEC
9/10 at St. John's • W, 47-19
9/24 vs. UW-River Falls

Concordia
9/17 vs. St. John's
9/24 vs. St. Thomas

UST
9/10 at UW-River Falls • W, 45-22
9/17 vs. St. Olaf
9/24 at Concordia-Moorhead

St. Olaf
9/10 at Simpson • W, 31-23
9/17 at St. Thomas

BU
9/3 vs. Simpson • W, 55-3

Here's a link to video of the Cobbers game against Emily Dickinson College.  The Dickinson team wasn't quite themselves with the tragic kiln explosion the week of the game.  I believe Fran Liebowitz started at quarterback for Dickinson.
