The Monday Morning Quarterback thing disgusts me. If you watch that and think used car salesman Glenny C is interested in keeping his roots at UST you are crazy. If he grew his hair out I'm sure it would have him looking like Don King, the only man who self promotes more than he.

Finally! Some irrationally directed anger.

Rebuttal: (Obnoxious sarcastic voice) Oh, oh, oh, I've NEVER seen Gags on TV. He's NEVER granting interviews to ANYONE.

In all seriousness: It's on Youtube therefore YOU sought it out and YOU clicked on it. Boom roasted. STALWART!

Does anybody remember the John Gagliardi show on MSC.  It was broadcast Monday evening during the mid 1990's and was the brainchild of Todd Fultz an Anthony LaPanta.  It was essentially the same format as the old Bud Grant show(some of you younger fellers probably won't remember that)...highlights of the previous week and a look ahead at the next opponent w/ maybe a feature mixed in.   Fultz was the producer and LaPanta was the emcee of the show.  I think the exposure really helped the Johnnies.  They filmed it in the old classroom at the SJU Warner Palestra.  One night LaPanta was interviewing Gags and John went off on some tangent.  He starts asking questions of Fultz who is standing off camera in the back of the room.  I doubt if it was live television but I thought it was funny as hell.  Todd's trying not talk or laugh too much because he and LaPanta are trying to do a "professional" production.  It really was John at his best....it would be great to see somebody put that on YouTube.

A fellow Johnnie Tweeted this to me yesterday:

Since 2000 SJU is 116-24. Gophers are 66-74. Vikes are 3-7 on weekends when both Johnnies and UM lose.

Faunch,
I hear you on quiet fans, but as a player (and I could be an anomaly), I really did not give a rat's arse about fans.  Cheer or not, I didn't care.  I was playing for myself, my coaches, and my teammates.  My motivation was my personal fierce competitiveness.
Nowadays, I cheer for big plays, but I'm pretty quiet otherwise.  I'm not the stand all game, cheer for every down type guy.
Definitely an anomaly.  I don't think St. John's would draw anywhere near the caliber of recruits with a Macalester or Carleton size fanbase.  I was always happy to be playing for something bigger than myself.  A big hostile crowd on the road is even more fun than a supportive home crowd. It's not that it's necessary to cheer to motivate someone, it's the responsibility of representing your school by the way you play.    If we're just talking about not tuning out the fans while you're in the middle of a play, then I can definitely relate, but I would think that most athletes care about the fans.
You can at least be happy that St. John's hasn't adopted the gophs strategy for third down---announcer guy yells "IT'S THIIIRD DOOOWN GOPHER FANS!!!!!"" -cue sound effects dun Dun DUN - bench players waving towels frantically-----followed by another easy pitch and catch for a bison first down.

Wait, are you telling me the Gophers still have some fans left !?!  ;D

I tend to disagree with you, AO.  I think John Gagliardi and a winning tradition draw way more recruits to SJU than crowd size.

A tradition unrivaled...

On defense, we are small and not very fast.

According to Frank's blog, the coaching staff is addressing this:
QuoteThere were some new faces on the defensive side of the ball. Senior running back Jakob Reding, senior wide receiver Mitch Bidleman and junior wide receiver Max Forster all saw some work with the defense in practice Tuesday. Though what role, if any, they may play there Saturday is still uncertain.

A tradition unrivaled...

So you are acknowledging that you tune in to MMQB...LOVE IT! I have a sneaky suspicion it's not GC's "self promotion" that is bothering you. Call the motives what you may, MMQB is an asset for all things UST.

Good luck on Saturday!

I don't dispute that winning is more important than the size of the fanbase in recruiting, but the fans are still going to be a factor, especially when you're comparing, let's say, Augsburg and St. John's--or anyone and St. John's.  In any case, we all know that locker rooms are the ultimate recruiting tool, as the Tommies will continue to take 15 of the top 20 D3 recruits from the state as long as their locker rooms remain on top.

I don't know why SJU doesn't do something like this.  What a great opportunity for collaboration between the university's communications and athletic department.  Couldn't a couple students that are communications majors do a weekly video segment of the previous game and earn credit for it?  It could almost be an internship program.  SJU definitely is dropping the ball and missing out on a tremendous marketing opportunity for the University and the football program.

The post game player and coach interviews SJU puts on their YouTube page are nothing special  It would be more compelling if they overlapped the interviews w/ game video, crowd and campus shots along w/a comment or two from John and some of the coaches.

To me it just seems like a good idea for any program. I have no clue why SJUrube is having a meltdown about Caruso promoting his program. Didn't realize it was supposed to be a secret that UST had a football team.

I agree.  I've watched the MMQB videos and think that they do a really solid job with the highlights and Caruso's commentary.  It is a good relations tool for fans, alumni, etc.  I would definitely be interested in hearing Johnson's take on Bethel games in a similar format.

Outside of it being interesting, I'm sure it is a great experience for the students who work to put the show together.

Did anyone watch 30 for 30's "Catching Hell" last night?

First hour was basically a documentary about Bill Buckner that has been redone a million times. Curse of the Bambino, Dennis Leary pissed, Bucky "f-ing" Dent, ball through Buckner's legs, yadda yadda yadda

Then came the Bartman deal in the 2003 NLCS...and all I want to see is an interview with Bartman. I've been waiting for this for 8 years. After an hour and 45 minutes I start to realize that this was just masochistic mastur****** for large market baseball fans. No Bartman interview, followed by a bunch of footage I've seen a billion times before. Stupid ESPN.

Not D3 football related, but nobody seems to want to engage on the UST/SJU game this weekend.

My ability to trash talk Tommies is near nonexistent now that I have an offspring who is a U$T graduate.

I have only a few many repeated lines, which I simply no longer can utter.

Well, we have more fans.   ;D
