That's a pretty crazy story about Red Wing, though. I can't imagine high school students coaching themselves, say because the coaches are all sent off to WWII. That sort of thing just couldn't happen.

Probably Wonka would know. Ornery as he was is it's too bad. The guy knew his facts. Last I heard he was writing for the Rochester paper. I always have said that Sid should retire and give a guy like him the chance.

He's banned for life here, me thinks.

Wonka isn't banned, but when he took a job as an assistant coach at St. Mary's, he stopped posting. Pretty sure he still lurks.

We will be hosting the Stiftungsfestivities Saturday in Lot M between Loras Hall and the Frey Science and Engineering Center on the south campus at UST. The tailgate will start at 10 a.m. Bring some culinary delights to share. Remember, no adult beverages or amplified music, i.e. Lady Gaga. :'(

Bench, I'd say Plums over Tiff's but thats just personal opinion. Also about some of the injury questions for the Tommies, Inglehart is hurt, not down on the depth chart, and the Linebacking corps will be at full strength this weekend. Figured I could finally post after sitting here reading the posts since I stopped playing.

Plum's has been preferred by me since '02. I made it official when one of the watiresses at Tiff's tried "Dee's Double Drop" (Always Sunny reference) on me two years ago. That is, they wait until you're good and sauced and engaged in a conversation, have you pay for your drinks, fail to bring back the change, and then try to have you pay for it again.

Anyway, good to see another Tommie on here. Dave Lee failed to mention what was ailing Inglehardt last week on the radio, and all he mentioned was that some linebackers were banged up.

You can drink at Bethel? Interesting.

Actually, I don't think we've ever been hassled for booze when tailgating at Bethel.  Not what you'd think, I know!

Bethel is by far the best place for a bunch of middle aged white guys at an opposing school to tailgate. Heck they even give people rides in golf carts from the parking lot with coolers to the tailgate spot. Bethel provides trash receptacles and keeps checking on us to see if we need anything....while the trash can is overflowing with beer cans, and guys are barely into the woods to cut a whizzz. They just leave us the hell alone....so we can drink our beer & eat our food in peace. 8-)
Amazing what a few wins over a once-hated rival will do to help put things in proper perspective.  I can remember SJU fans being hassled for sitting in the home stand at the '97 game; not pretty.  Glad those days are history.

Wow, a Stiftugfest burger sounds really, really good right now. ;D

Chubbs, welcome back.  I'm going to miss Spackler.  Hopefully we can still work in a few Caddyshack references.

In that spirit, I think this is what former Hopkins star Marcus Williams had to say as he was sealing NDSU's victory
on Saturday:  "In the immortal words of Jean Paul Sartre, 'Au revoir, gopher'. "

Good to be back with you, kind Sir.  Let us know if you want to come down to the beach this winter.

It won't be the last time that phrase is uttered at TCF this year.  This gem came from a Brady Hoke press conference this week...probably. ;)   "I smell varmint *******, and the only good varmint ******* is dead varmint *******...I think."

BTW, does St. Olaf still have that annoying PA guy who shrieks "WHERE'S THE ROWDY SECTION?" when the opposition has the ball on third down?  Worst...PA guy...ever.  If he's still there, I hope the Royals hang at least 60 on them this weekend.  He ought to be the PA guy at TCF; he and Bucky deserve each other. :o

Here's a question: Who has the worst PA announce in the MIAC? The guy at Hamline is really not good

I have always been a Tiffs guy myself. (may be slightly biased having been employed there during the glory days) That being said, have absolutely not a bad thing to say about Plums or the McQuillans and am never opposed to having a libation or a dozen there either-just typically end up on Ford Parkway. Good times. Wish I was posed with the dilemma of which place to pre/post-game at. Roll Tommies Roll!

The games at Bethel
Knew that, but the most enduring memory I have of playing Olaf was that goofball howling as we ran his team off the field.  That and the steam whistle they'd blow after scoring, which wasn't heard nearly as much of course.

I'm sorry but if the PA guy has to actively implore the fans (or just parents, in Olaf's case ;)) to make noise, then your team and fans must be pretty weak.

<<As great and successful as John has been it would appear he is lacking a little perspective.>> Ding, ding, ding!

<<John was questioning why they had put together a search committee to find a new coach.  I'm even told that John asked why the old coach couldn't just pick the new coach.>> My guess is this was an attempt to see if the Administration had changed their mind on his prior inquiry on the subject.

<<Gee...I wonder who he would like to appoint as his replacement?>>  Asked and answered.  A cynic would say would say that it is a game of chicken, waiting for yes, or as I read many, many pages back, he wants 500 wins.  I hope neither are are true, as both would be a dis-service to his legacy, current and future students/SJU stakeholders, and the transition in waiting.

I was thinking along the same lines last night.  What an irony it would be that in the quest for  coaching immortality (500+ wins) the SJU tradition might be tarnished and returned the obscurity it was when John arrived on campus.
IMHO I doubt and don't want to believe that will happen.
