Asked and answered.  A cynic would say would say that it is a game of chicken, waiting for yes, or as I read many, many pages back, he wants 500 wins.  I hope neither are are true, as both would be a dis-service to his legacy, current and future students/SJU stakeholders, and the transition in waiting.

I was thinking along the same lines last night.  What an irony it would be that in the quest for  coaching immortality (500+ wins) the SJU tradition might be tarnished and returned the obscurity it was when John arrived on campus.
IMHO I doubt and don't want to believe that will happen.

It would certainly be ironic. But even if this apparent 'slide' were to carry on for a few seasons (which a few lackluster games in 2011 certainly doesn't guarantee), you don't just erase 50+ years of tradition overnight. SJU has built up a half century of alumni support and interest. They won't stay down long, and the jury is still out on how 'down' they really even are. A win on Saturday and life returns to the 2011 team.

D O.C.

Well, if the johns could ever get into the playoffs again they might pull an Augsburg against LINFIELD to salvage another couple decades.  :P

Naw, that ending was inexcusable. Just heart ripping for the faithful.

OAS- are you going to make an appearance on Saturday?
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Indeed.  Looking forward to taking in my first D3 action of the season.

I hear that Tommieville will be on tailgating lock down.  Will Johnnie faithful be gathering beforehand somewhere?  I saw O'Gara's is running a free shuttle to the game.

Word on the street is you too have a free shuttle and we are gathering at your place before the game.

I have a random question for you guys.

So last night the school I work at had this speaker on positive coaching, sportsmanship etc (surburban Boston).  The speaker told this story about a high school in Minnesota (Red Wing) and how they played a state championship in football against (Pius XX?) and played without any coaches for some reason or another.  The speaker says Red Wing won the game by calling their own plays, etc and won the state championship.

So today I start to look on the internet and can't find anything on the subject.  Just seems like a wierd story and a quick check shows that Red Wing hasn't won any state champioinships in anything besides boys hockey in 1997 and some womens sports (golf and swimming).

I dunno, the story just seemed too wierd to make up for a guy who goes around the country speaking about things like this.  He was from California.

Ok, if I can follow Willy Wonka's tweets, this is the story.  And apparently my memory is not as good as I thought it was.

Red Wing won the first round of the 2002 state high school football tournament without coaches.  There was a teacher's strike* in Red Wing so the coaches could not coach.  As a side note, the head coach had a son who was a senior on that team.  He did not mention how they fared in subsequent rounds.  They did not with the state title.

So, apparently this guy is not quite as full of $hit as we all thought yesterday.

* I'm sure they had good reason to strike.  No comments from any union bashers.  :-X

From Frank's blog:

* A downscale from a story I wrote earlier this week. St. Thomas school officials now say the temporary bleachers being brought in behind the south end zone at O'Shaughnessy Stadium for use by St. John's fans will seat more like 500 people instead of the 1,000 originally thought. The bleachers cannot be large enough to block the scoreboard.

Awesome.  I'm glad I have a sideline pass.  At least I hope I still do.

That should help out the profit margin.  :o

Also from Frank's update, it appears that we will have a whole new defense and the QB shuffle this weekend.  In regards to the defense, maybe a new unit will jell in only a week's time before the biggest game of the season, but I recommend we buy lots of Reddenbocker early.  Also, the QB shuffle is official policy again.  I recommend nitrous oxide and a commitment to count to ten.

I had stopped paying close attention to the Twinks quite a while ago this season, but I see that they won their last two games and avoided dropping 100 for the year.  So congratulations for that.

(Sort of like congratulating Jeffrey Dahmer for avoiding the fatty thighs, but sometimes you just have to take the positives where you can get them)

After reading about all the additions / changes to the Johnnies defensive lineup I gotta figure that if there was a spread on this game the Tommies would be favored by 21.  We are starting freshman linebacker and at corner a converted wide receiver.  Anybody think the Tommies will test them right away?
I also would bet that Bruns runs the shotgun and some variation of a spread at least once in the 1st quarter and a couple of times in the first half.  Gotta do something to try and change things up.  I wouldn't doubt a trick play or two early.
Just way too many uncertainties for the boys in red.  I wish I felt differently but I don't see how SJU is able to keep UST from putting up big yards and points.  I see 42-14 being a very likely final score...I hope I'm wrong.

So since the extra seating has been cut in half, are they only going to charge $8.50 as opposed to $10?

A tradition unrivaled...

Nice try,, but they have to cover the expense of those rented bleachers......geez!  ::)
