The Monday Morning Quarterback thing disgusts me. If you watch that and think used car salesman Glenny C is interested in keeping his roots at UST you are crazy. If he grew his hair out I'm sure it would have him looking like Don King, the only man who self promotes more than he.

So you are acknowledging that you tune in to MMQB...LOVE IT! I have a sneaky suspicion it's not GC's "self promotion" that is bothering you. Call the motives what you may, MMQB is an asset for all things UST.

Good luck on Saturday!

I have no problem with a SCHOOL taking advantage of opportunities to raise its profile. Marketing now plays a huge role in how schools communicate with students and seek prospects. After all, SJU's athletic director came from the marketing side of the sports office before joining administration.

My thing with the Monday Morning Quarterback is it seems to be all about Caruso, and not the University. (In all honesty I've probably watched 4 of these over the last number of years) IMO the reason he does these sorts of things is to raise his profile and not the school. Why else would he lead the team on the field each game, at the front, arms locked with his players. Does he not realize he no longer plays. That is his prerogative and he doesn't have to answer to me. There just seems to be something contrived about him. Whether it's the ringing of the bell, locking arms with the team as they enter the field, MMQB, singing the UST fight song at the end of the game; it all seems designed to build up the coach whereas the players, assistant coaches and University are just pawns. It's simply not a style I enjoy.

First of all, the MMQB segment is ostensibly him taking you through 3 minutes of highlights, which is nicely cued to the relevant thing he is talking about. In those highlights, I've never once seen Caruso running into the end zone for a touchdown. He's not the editor/producer, so any time he appears in it, it was the camera person filming something they found to be interesting. That, and it's on flipping Youtube, get a grip.

Second, there are hundreds of college football programs around the country that have a "Coach's Show," (even Division II, III and NAIA schools) which are 19 minutes longer than the little Youtube segment he has. Gags has done an infinite amount shows, programs, interviews over the course of his tenure at SJU. He is a living person with an award named after him, and I've never once heard him be bashful about that. And for me to get upset about that would be ridiculous because it seems like something a reasonable person would allow if they wanted to continue to have good players to come and play for them. There has to be a little bit of salesman in a college head coach, it's not like a public high school where your success is predicated on the athletic talent within a 5 mile radius.

I have NO idea where you're coming from, you're upset about a guy who wants his team to succeed, and you think he's off-base because there's something you don't like/trust about him. But the things you don't like/trust about him, are essentially the same things SJU has been doing for years. Promoting the program, working smarter not harder, preparing well, exciting the fanbase, being engaged, being the exact opposite of Don Roney in every way.

Maybe Caruso will leave, and maybe he'll realize the value of not having to uproot his family every 2 or 3 years for greener pastures, who knows. But I think the amount of success he's had in the last few years, and the big trophy that says "National Coach of the Year" indicates that maybe, despite what you think, the man actually has a clue what he's doing. Stalwart.

I love how Roney has been out of the picture for quite a few years, but he is still referenced here with some regularity  ;D

Have you ever stopped to consider that anything that raises GC's profile at the same time raises the profile of the school? He represents The University in everything he does-same with any other coach.

As for leading the team onto the field arms locked, ringing of the bell and school song, really? You're questioning the motive in them? Perhaps all of them are portraying unity? With both the team and the players. Again, nothing wrong there.

Maybe you should get to what's really bothering you about the guy. It's not his so called self promotion, admit it.

Are you suggesting that he has a man-crush on Caruso?

The statute of limitations has passed, and I don't necessarily know if anyone that I was on the team with still reads this thing, but seriously, he was one of the most unispired human beings to ever be named the head coach of a college football team. It was almost like he was George Wemeier's administrative assistant.

And I'm not one of those guys that doesn't like the coach because he didn't get as much playing time as he wanted (though I would've liked more...who wouldn't?), I knew my role, so it's not like that. Plain and simple, the man wasn't all that interested in winning football games. He knew he'd probably go 6 -4 by default, because of UST's location, and that was fine. In fact, he pulled that off for damn near a decade.

I heard a story about lineman that had gotten hurt earlier in the game and someone had overlooked that fact on an extra point. So a senior, Rudy type, runs out onto the field no questions asked, the kind of guy you'd only play after you get the freshman some game experience in a 50 point blowout. I'm not sure if I know the story exactly, but I think UST may have been going for two, and the kid does what he can, takes his guy on, and UST converts. Caruso ran out onto the field and gave the kid a flying chest bump. They were down a guy in a crucial moment of the game, the kid recognized the problem, went in and did the job he had been practicing all year long. Without hesitation. When he was in there, he was expected to do the job to the best of his ability, and that's what he did.

In my day, we would've either burned a timeout or took a delay of game, to search for the #2 on the depth chart or beg the #1 to get back out there. Against SJU in '02, they refused to play Ryan Galindo even though Justin Hall could barely walk. No faith in anyone. A lot of disheartened guys got spit out the other side of that program.

People always use the cliche "when SJU and UST meet, you can throw records and rankings out the window."  I had to refresh my memory on the specifics, but my senior year (2002), we were 8-1 and ranked #6; U$T (just UST then) had one of their normal, talented bunch of underacheivers.  We won handily  ;)

So, at risk of sounding cliche, I am throwing that cliche out the window.  I am hoping for a nice turnaround, but I think tomorrow will be mostly UST.

But, hey, at least we'll be drunker  ;)

Q. Why did the Johnnie put a hydraulic lift in his pick-up?

A. So his girlfriend could get in. You know, because she's fat. Like, really fat.

This 30-ish St. Thomas grad was working out at the Highland Park Lifetime Fitness the other day when he spotted a sweet young thing. With that cocky kind of UST swagger he asked the trainer, "What machine in here should I use to impress that sweet thing over there?"

The trainer looked the Tommy up and down and said, "I would try the ATM in the lobby."

A 45 year old SJU alum was mopping the floors at a local elementary school when the principal approached him and said, "Contratulations on attaining the job of head custodian. Now that you're full time, I should inform you that you now have health and dental."

The custodian looked at the principal and replied, "The dental won't be nethethary" as he finished some discarded half-eaten Jello sitting in the lunchroom's trashbin.
