Hamline (+60.5) @ #3 St. Thomas

Can't say I ever seen that line before.

I picked Hamline. Not sure Caruso is comfortable with beating a team by 40/50/60 without giving his 3-deeps an opportunity to play, which has been when UWRF, STO and Concordia have been able to score their points.
The Tommies have put up 60 the past 2 seasons, and this particular batch of pipers is proving pretty adept at keeping the goose-egg on their end, so I thought 60 was a pretty safe spread.

I think it is an appropriate line, but it still made me laugh.

Not saying it's not an apporpriate line. But it's a home game for UST and I imagine there will some guys on the field in the 4th quarter that barely get scout team reps.

I was watching a special last night on BTN about former U of Iowa wrestling coach Dan Gable.  There was some footage of U of Iowa wrestlers competing against Auggies.

A tradition unrivaled...

@DustySJU,

I haven't heard much "bite the hand that feeds you" type dialogue but from a few passive football fans. They tend to be lazy, uninformed, and impatient (like Goofer fans). The nice thing about SJU is that their fanbase tends to know more about the game itself than your average rube.

But if Gags is going to stick around, a Mack Brown (Texas) approach might be needed. As in, a few assistants tasked with recruiting may need to look for work elsewhere before the attractiveness of an SJU job loses is luster.

And what's with Dave Deland calling out D3football.com? I haven't heard anyone on here saying Gags should go.

Finally (@ the rube on the SCtimes all pissed off about lights), who cares if they install lights? Does anyone even notice lights at a stadium? And why does it ruin the aesthetics? I'd say all the popcorn and Pepsi advertisements are worse than lights. All lights do is give you the ability to see when it's dark. Football under the lights is hardly a new-fangled 21st century concept that ruins the integrity of the game. Get a grip.

To close: Augsburg has the nicest athletic facilities in the MIAC by far.

Bench;  I suspect you weren't at the game Saturday however what reports have you received regarding the gameday action?  Must have been one of the most importatnt games in Auggie history so I imagine it was pretty festive.

I wasn't able to make the game but I listened to the whole thing. It was mentioned about 50 times that Auggie had to bring in extra seating for the affair.

Anyway, Augsburg seemed to be quite prepared defensively, and barring a few big plays, seemed to be in lockstep with UST in the 1st half. Caruso basically said that the only real adjustment he had to make at halftime was an "attitude adjustment" on the o-line which I thought was great. He also took the blame on a particularly bad call.

Auggie was able to get down in the red zone a number of times but were shut out. In the second half Tobin really got going, and with the exception of the fumble, really started to wear down the Auggies. From what I heard, and what Caruso intimated, the Auggies are for real and could be a tough beat for STO and Bethel.

I was unable to make it either but I was able to listen to the game on the "Evil Neighbor". It was interesting hearing the Tommie bias on a station that I had listend to for so many years do the various hometown sports (Vikings,Gophers,Twins). Of course it should be no different, it is the Tommies broadcast after all.

Clearly the Tommies are #3 for good reason. I agree that this was the biggest game in Auggieland in quite a while, probably since 1997. Wish I could have been there. Augsburg had a holding penalty in the third quarter that killed a drive and had two more 4th qtr chances in the Red Zone. Good defense by St Thomas kept them out of the endzone both times. It was 10-0 until the last few minutes when they let Tracy get loose and score to make it 17-0. I like to think it could have gone the other way if the Auggies score both times but The Tommies are a good team and that is how good teams win football games, with defense.

I was at the game and it was quite a fun atmosphere. Lots of fans, and everyone was pretty into it. Two observations from the game:

1. Why the hell would the Auggies try and pass on two separate 4th and inches situations? With past Auggie teams that couldn't run the ball as effectively, I could see it. But this freshman RB is the real deal, and he was running really well on the Tommies. I think those two plays were huge turning points in the game.

2. Caruso really has a thing for screaming at refs, huh? I understand most coaches do, but there were a couple of times that he was 5-10 yards out on the field, screaming at an official for quite a while. On the 50 yard TD run to make it 17-0, he was screaming at the ref for about 2 minutes during the run and after the run. Just thought it was a bit strange since it was a TD run that essentially won the game....

"Dear John" letter...

I scanned around to see if any chat had erupted regarding St. Cloud Time's Dave Deland's column following the Johnnies loss to Bethel.  Not a word on this board but a flurry of comments from readers have shown up including The D3 Guru.

Personally I didn't think there was much conversation regarding an ousting of SJU's head man but according to Deland it's all the rage.

Either The Times or Dave don't know how to tag their columns or it was purposely buried... almost impossible to find however here's the link for easy reading... http://www.sctimes.com/article/20111009/SPORTS/110090015/DeLand-column-s-just-too-soon-Dear-John-

BTW it was interesting that a regional newspaper, owned by Gannett,  is using a fan site, with an operating budget equal to 2 cases of beer, as a reference. The Internet really is the great equalizer  ;)
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

I didn't realize I would start such a debate on my UST going D2 question. A lot of people raised a lot of good points that I hadn't thought of.

Separately, I'm flipping channels and just caught UWEC vs. UW-Oshkosh on FSN. Is FSN now airing not-live D3 games? Is this new? Kinda cool (even though it's WIAC...)

Yes, we generally operate on the "barter" system.... the team writes and then in return receives something to drink..... it shows.

FSN has been airing a few WIAC games for the past couple of years.  Pretty weak technically, but good to see D III on TV in any form.

If they force Anthony Lapanta to drive to Roseau to do a high school hockey game, maybe a MIAC football game is not out of the realm of possibility.

Ryan Hoag is a way better football player than Blake Elliot.

This is your best one so far, Bench.  I had never heard of Hoag until he became Mr. Irrelevant, and that's after playing against him two or three times.  I'll never understand how he got drafted and players like Blake Elliot, Ben Matthews or Scott Hvistendahl didn't get a look. :o
