Ryan Hoag is a way better football player than Blake Elliot.

This is your best one so far, Bench.  I had never heard of Hoag until he became Mr. Irrelevant, and that's after playing against him two or three times.  I'll never understand how he got drafted and players like Blake Elliot, Ben Matthews or Scott Hvistendahl didn't get a look. :o

I remember John Gagliardi being asked once what he thought about Hoag's chances at the NFL.  I'm paraphrasing, but he repsonded with something to the effect of, "We shut him down with a 5'9" cornerback that runs a 5.3 40-year dash.  Maybe they'll draft him, too."

Enough said  ;D

Elliot got a look from the Vikes but broke his leg I thought.

It's been awhile, but I think I remember some Gustavus guys coming to UST to have some informal 7 on 7s with us one summer. Some of our guys were talking about Ryan Hoag, and I said "which one his he?" And they pointed him, and I watched for a bit...and then said, "No really, which one is Ryan Hoag?"

Not that I was anything special, but I just didn't see it with Hoag.

He was not drafted but signed with the Vikes.  He then shattered a leg in practice.

It didn't really matter how fast he could run because he couldn't catch!

I knew he wasn't drafted. I know of only Tony Beckham from UW-Stout and Hoag getting drafted from area DIIIs in the last decade.

I looks like Tommy Becker from UST had himself a very nice Pro-Day but failed to get signed. Which is too bad because he has nice size and speed. Would've been neat to at least get him in a camp. I'm guessing after one year of sitting out after a DIII career your window has pretty much closed unless you want to go the obscure indoor football route.

I know of a guy or two from UND  every year that make nice lives for themselves in the CFL. Surprised more DIII guys aren't up there. I think the only rule is one Canadian on the field at all times.

Johnnie Red

Carletonsid, thanks for the video of Toby Keith and the Red Solo Cup. :D Hopefully we could get Dusty to add it to the Johnnie football website. Mr. Keith should have given Red Hot Bennie a chance to appear in the video. ;)

I saw this and thought of you guys this morning. Never been to the festivities at SJU, but I think this could be added to your playlist.

Toby Keith - Red Solo Cup (Unedited Version)

Classic.  Thanks for sharing.

Come up early on the 29th.  We'll have a red cup with your name on it.

Also, Derek Stanley from Whitewater and a couple more if you go outside the region.

Asinine comments until Bethel week installment 5:

Waldvogel only needs 2,328 yards to catch Blake Elliot for the career All-Purpose yards mark in the MIAC.

So, if UST plays 7 more games, Fritz only has to average 332 yards a game to tie.

Exactly. A corner I played with used to joke that he had as many interceptions as Hoag had receptions against him in 2002. It wasn't totally accurate, Hoag had 2 for 16 yds and he had 1 INT for 11 yds  ;D But he was about 5'9" as well!

I do remember Hoag leading all competitors in trash talking however. Which really just got more and more comical as the game went on. A fact that eluded Mr. Irrelevant for the duration of the game. At one point Andy Traetow had 'huge' 4 yd gain and Hoag ran up to the pile and started shouting "That's why we call him the A-Train baby!" in our faces.  ::) We almost fell over laughing it was so absurd. But I did remember feeling bad for Traetow, who'd done nothing but run hard and was by all accounts a pretty good guy.

Hasn't been any talk yet (probably because of the lack of Oles on the board), but the Goat Trophy/Cereal Bowl/Turning the Eagle is on the line this weekend in Northfield.

An article on the history of the Goat, though they couldn't find a recent picture of the tropy, apparently.

Will this game be using the metric system? http://northfield.patch.com/articles/this-picture-in-history-who-needs-yards-northfield-played-metric-football.

Nerds.

"The wider field allowed the St. Olaf team to use their strength in running the ball outside, giving them an advantage over Carleton."

Yeah, a wider field.  That was Carleton's problem.

Believe it or not, in 1977 this was not thought of as nerdy.  We were taught the metric system in 1st -12th grades as it was a foregone conclusion that the US would switch to the metric system.  I wish we had.  Going 105 sounds a lot more fun than going 65.   ;)
