Frank has an update on his blog where he reports that the Johnnies are training a full schedule this week.  No rest for the weary, which is good to see.  A lot of practice and instruction is needed to get above .500 this year.  In fact, Frank's post almost reads as if the team is practicing more than usual, which is even better to see (if I read that correctly).

Hasn't been any talk yet (probably because of the lack of Oles on the board), but the Goat Trophy/Cereal Bowl/Turning the Eagle is on the line this weekend in Northfield.

An article on the history of the Goat, though they couldn't find a recent picture of the tropy, apparently.

Will this game be using the metric system? http://northfield.patch.com/articles/this-picture-in-history-who-needs-yards-northfield-played-metric-football.

Nerds.

Believe it or not, in 1977 this was not thought of as nerdy.  We were taught the metric system in 1st -12th grades as it was a foregone conclusion that the US would switch to the metric system.  I wish we had.  Going 105 sounds a lot more fun than going 65.   ;)

OK ROR, but if it had stuck, Sammy Hagar would have to re-do his speeding anthem " I Can't Go 55!."

What would it be? "I Can't Go 87.5 KPH." ?  ;D

Well, I live in a land of stupid, er, metric, and people here still measure personal height in feet and inches.

I find metric the culmination of the utter dumbing down of society.  Everyone does everything in base ten now.  Only with Imperial measures do brains get any exercise using base twelve.  Pretty soon these conformist do gooders will want to dispose of the Sumerian base sixty system and give us a new measure for time.

Of course, the ultimate indictment of the metric system is that it was a tyrannical creature spawned from the French Revolution where those who argued against it received personal introductions to a guillotine.  And other than soft cheese, mild mustards and late night soft-core pron movies disguised as cultured explorations into angst and human betrayal, I challenge you to name one good thing that came from France.

Any good slam down of France requires an appearance of the Surrender Monkey.

I was just watching a revolutionary war documentary, so I'd have to give the French credit for this:

What have you done for me lately?

Mr. Ypsi

Well, I just had a really great Beaujelais (though it was a 2002 vintage - is that lately?) ;D

And I guess the Statue of Liberty is not very 'lately' either! ;)

I'm a bit lost here.  Are we talking about the French or the Romans?

Oz, I was thinking everyone was doing everything with base two now. The problem is, they don't realize it and it certainly doesn't further your cause in actually having people think. Anyhow, time to work on several square rods of lawn to see how many bushels and pecks of leaves have fallen there.

UW-Whitewater and UW-Stout are playing under the lights...any thoughts on some MIAC teams doing this occassionally?

I believe Augsburg has dabbled in night games a time or two, but I think it could nice for some schools to do this to give the game day a little uniqueness and enhance the atmosphere.

I agree that football under the lights has a unique charm and would be a good addition to the conference schedule.

I could be wrong about this so please correct me if I am, but aren't the only MIAC stadiums with lights Auggie and U$T?

I don't think Bethel has given any serious consideration to adding lights.  In addition to the game field, lighting would have to be added to the parking areas and walking routes to the stadium to safely accomodate an entering and exiting crowd.  Also, balls kicked toward the east goal post would be very hard to find in the reduced light in the trees and high grass.  A net would likely have to be added there.  I'd imagine the neighbors to the south of the stadium would also have something to say about it.

They've got lighting in all the parking lots on campus and lighting on all the sidewalks to and from the parking lots. Soho, East, SRC, West and Heritage are already utilized by students, faculty and staff during evening hours and wouldn't pose any security issues. I think the bigger issue would be money and the aesthetics of adding lights. As for the neighbors...eh, no different than the folks living directly around Mounds View. And there's pretty significant tree cover dividing the one side of the field that is adjacent to residential homes.

I don't see lights at Bethel anytime soon. But I do think it could be a fun addition. Early in the year for cooler games and the opportunity to practice with full light late into the fall. Right now, the team often goes to Mounds View when it gets into November as they have lights and artificial turf for when the ground freezes.

I didn't realize I would start such a debate on my UST going D2 question. A lot of people raised a lot of good points that I hadn't thought of.

Separately, I'm flipping channels and just caught UWEC vs. UW-Oshkosh on FSN. Is FSN now airing not-live D3 games? Is this new? Kinda cool (even though it's WIAC...)

FSN has been airing a few WIAC games for the past couple of years.  Pretty weak technically, but good to see D III on TV in any form.

They did the SJU-River Falls game in 2007; I remember a neighbor called me on a Wednesday night to tell me he was watching my son on television.  I saw the UWEC - Oshkosh game this week as well - surprising ending (but I guess that's for another board).

GAC is having a rough season. You look at their record and would assume they're just a doormat, but looking at some of the previous losses and scores and you realize they've been in some games. Still searching for the killer instinct it seems.

Bethel's O looked stellar today. Over 300 yds rushing. Aakre threw for 3 TD's.

The D seems to be in bend don't break mode right now. Not sure what happened to our starting CB, but we need all hands on deck next week against UST.

Cobbers enlist a very balanced offensive attack, and hold Augsburg to only 85 yards rushing in a 38-26 homecoming victory. Why oh why oh why oh why did Concordia have to drop that OT loss to SJU earlier this season? I think both the Bethel and STO games down the road will be worth a look. Fear the ear, baby!

Any word out of Northfield?

While I'm on it, how do they (St. Olaf) not have video or at least audio for their games yet? Come join us in the 21st century guys, it really is a lot of fun!  ;)
