I find this whole argument silly-each school has its share of alumni that are very well respected in their chosen profession. Neither school has significantly more or less and each school has its share of those alumni who have struggled, in school and in the job market. Each school is a fine institution of higher learning, but different in its location and, therefore, in which type of student it attracts. There is no superiority in attending an urban University vs. a rural University-to claim otherwise is just silly.
Kids hopefully choose the best fit-whichever school-and hopefully each school graduates those who will make a mark on society in a positive way.

Perhaps most other UST fans can forgo rabble-rousing, but how many do you think simply don't participate because some other members forcefully attack those expressing an uncomfortable opinion.

On the contrary, I think most of us low-browed Johnnies enjoy the presence of Tommie posters.  Exchanging barbs with guys like USTBench, MIAC Maniac, Tommie Gun, etc may seem malicious, but it's usually all in fun.  I've had the pleasure of hanging out with UST Bench (and to a lesser extent, Maniac ;) ), and they're good guys.  That's why we poke and prod them ;D

Stick to football, not institutional comparisons, and learn to take things with a grain of salt.  Most of us use this board (and football, in general) as an escape from the real world--no need to get too intellectual or stressed out.

I like the thought behind your posts, and strongly welcome you to the board. It has certainly gotten more colorful the past few days. Take off your gloves, take a deep breath and have some fun before you have a stroke or something.

Good advice.

And yes, I did specifically say UST fans, because there are certainly SJU fans who have taken many unnecessary shots at UST. In some sense, it is the nature of the rivalry, but it doesn't foster the D-III and MIAC community at all.

It's definitely a silly argument, but that doesn't mean the schools are equal.  The good news for St. John's is that you don't have to have a larger enrollment, better facilities, financial aid or academic programs to win football games.

Hazzben,

In a game against Bethel/Linfield I'd have to say you're right, that Tobin is probably our most dangerous/effective weapon.

If you put a physical CB on Fritz it may take him out of his element just long enough to where a team that can pressure Dakota will have success limiting the passing game. I think this year, it's all going to be a matter of what a DB can do to Fritz in the first 5 yards. If you can chicken fight with him, jam him, or knock him off his route, then UST will probably spend more time running between the tackles than developing an intermediate/long passing game.

That being said, UST has also had more random WRs step up this year than in past years. It's kind of the, "Okay, their goal is to take Fritz out, let's see who else feels like having a 100yds receiving today" approach. That, or Dakota will just take off running.

What are your thoughts on Aaron Terell-Byrd?  He's had a number of solid runs the past few weeks...his size and cuts remind me a little bit of a young Barry Sanders.

Link: http://newsfeeds.stthomas.edu/2011/08/23/aaronterell-byrd/

1) Nobody is Barry Sanders. If Terrell-Byrd played for Hamline and managed to gain 3,000 yards rushing in a single year, that comparison could be validated...maybe.

2) He does seem to be a good little back, with a very quick first step that uses is diminutive size as a strength, in that he'll put his hand on a O-Lineman's back and just kind of feel his way to the second level and operate in space. It appears that he has usurped Toney as Caruso's "second guy" for now. I feel like Toney runs a little more like Wartman (slasher) and Terrell-Byrd runs a little more like Tobin. That, and Toney has had some fumblelitis.

They're both freshmen and much smaller than backs we've had in the past (exception being Pete Ridley). But it's fairly obvious that if two California kids wind up in St. Paul at a highly ranked D-III school, they were probably loaded with talent (read: speed) but were seemingly overlooked. I'd like to see them in a year when Ty Stenzel has a full offseason with them. It'd be nice to see each of them put on about 20lbs.

Agreed.

I was actually back on campus a couple of months ago and a few people told me that Caruso is developing a pretty solid pipeline to West Coast schools...CA in particular.

The intellectual superiority of UST...anyone from Carleton want to weigh in?  ::)

I feel like I should respond to this, but am having a hard time translating my thoughts into grunts and monosyllabic words.   ;)

I'm not so sure I'd use an Escalade as a measure of success.  I've seen plenty of Escalades sitting at trailer parks and shoddy apartments  ;D  It's all about priorities!

Barry Sanders :o I'd be uncomfortable comparing 99.9% of DI running backs to the great cut master. But a backup DIII running back? That's just a wee bit of a stretch. He's probably a quality back, but there's no one in the MIAC who's in the Barry Ballpark. Shoot, even Coe's own Fred Jackson, while shredding the NFL as a dual run/receiver option, is not even close to Barry.
