Kilted Rat update:

Allison Marie, weighing in at 8 lbs 1 oz.

Congratulations to Dusty and Amy.

Not to mention, congratulations to Allison!

So, she's to be raised to become a Bennie? ;D  (If she ever runs across this board, I hope she also develops a thick skin! 8-))

Also noted this while on the BU website.  http://www.bethel.edu/giving/projects/fitness-center

Looks like they're finally going to upgrade from the shoe-box of a weight room that is there now.  It won't be the lifetime fitness of the MIAC, but maybe the Anytime Fitness of the MIAC?  LA fitness might be too much of a stretch.

While it was definitely a shoe box (and you were at least using it after they renovated the shoe box!), I loved working out in that place. The space limitations definitely meant that it was essentially an athlete only environment, but it had a little bit of a Rocky-ish feel to it. Especially during the summer, when it'd get all nasty and humid. I loved finishing a set of hang cleans, power cleans or power press and seeing the grime of the barbell all over my shirt. And something about it's shoeboxyness made it camaraderie central.

I'm sure Coach Meyer is salivating at the prospect of space and new toys to utilize in his ongoing endeavor to torture BU football players into muscular machines. Rick was already doing a great job, this should only improve the results.

I'd also argue this is one of the most significant improvements in the Bethel program over the last decade. Rick has brought a level of expertise and professionalism to the weight program that wasn't there prior. And the level of intensity and commitment to the strength and conditioning program is through the roof. It's fun to see those guys grind it out in the offseason and watch the transformation between 18 year old athletes and 21/22 year old muscular men. I saw Aakre after a workout this summer and thought, that guy is a ripped 235 and bigger than most of the linebackers when I played!

Yes you're right, I didn't mind the shoe-box feel either, but looking at it from a perspective of the rest of the student body, improvement is greatly needed.  I felt welcome in there when I was on the football team, but the last 3 years of being a club sport rugby player, I always felt like I was sneaking into a country club that I wasn't a member of.  Always felt like I was getting in a varsity athlete's way.  I can imagine that would keep a lot of non athletes from even going into the place.

I would imagine it would be a pretty solid setup to keep the old weight room as only for athletes or weightlifting classes and have the fitness center for the general student body.

I wonder if the average SJU graduate connects the two; if so, this helps explain the divergence in fortunes between SJU and UST. Perhaps SJU graduates can find solace in the immortal words of Caddyshack.  "Well, the world needs ditch-diggers too."

UST alumni do enjoy Plums because it's a great local establishment and offers a place to network.  You know us UST alumni like to sit around and talk business all day.  We bond over talk of leading corporations and managing our employees, who are often graduates of SJU.  It seems like the staff is really interested in football...

It seems odd that two large donors to the UST mega-fund never attended UST. Richard M. Schulze, Best Buy, never attended college and has an Honorary Degree from UST - funny what a $50 million donation will do. Lee R. Anderson Sr., The APi Group attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Some would ask.--> of the $60 million donated by Mr. & Mrs. Anderson, how much The APi Group is recouping from the construction work occurring on campus. The construction boom also is benefitting UST graduate, Opus Corporation founder Gerald Rahunhorst.
Don't get me wrong, it is fantastic that these gentlemen have donated huge sums of money to UST, but the "indirect" benefit they and their companies are receiving through the purchase of goods and services is not coincidental.
I wonder if the average UST student, graduate and fan connects these events or even knows who these gentlemen are or how they make their fortunes?  8-)

As far as the value of the degree (in business anyway), it is just as respected as any other MIAC school, in my experience.

We had a recent grad from Bethel intern with us this summer.  He quit after about a month because 40 hours a week was too much for him  ::)  And this was not a stressful job ;)

Yep, know who they are...can't say I care either. Thanks for the $110 mill.

At least they don't use sweat shop labor in southeast Asia like some Oregon alums, but, can't say I'd turn down a donation from Phil Knight either.

His step-son went to SJU!  I visited his house once in college--it's redonkulous.

There must be something about couples named Dusty & Amy (Amiee) having a disproportionate amount of female children  ;)

Yeah, and at my last job a johnnie was in the first group of folks to get laid off because it was generally known that he pretty much sat at his desk and surfed the net most of the day. I've also had good experiences with SJU grads at work, so I don't judge the school based on one person.

There are duds and winners from every school.  My point wasn't that everyone from BU is a winner.  Just that MIAC degrees are on a pretty level playing field in terms of being viewed as acceptable to employers.

Yeah, I worked with a Johnnie one summer during college. He didn't quit, but we all wished the organization would fire his lazy butt. Instead he kept milking his paycheck for the full 2 months while we picked up the slack.  ::) We've all got our bad apples.

Coincidentally, my other co-workers from GAC, UWEC, Occidental and St. Olaf were exceptional. The UWEC gal was actually dating Connor Crimmons (sp?), an Olineman for Carleton that I got to go up against the next few years. That was a fun twist!

Lighten up, BU dudes!  Just giving you a hard time.  ;D  I actually attribute his worthlessness to his spoiled, cake-eater, shores-of-Lake Minnetonka upbringing, not his Bethel education.

Hold on, I thought every cake-eater in MN was drawn like a moth to the cake-eater mothership on Summit  8-)  ;)

Sorry to veer from the topic of the day (although I will note that the black sheep in our family was a Carleton guy :) ), but I wanted to pass on that Stretch internet, which the Gusties use, works great on my Android phone. I'm checking out the Mount-Capital game writer now and it looks good and buffering free.

And Duff, use that bundle of joy as an excuse as needed, but you'll soon that this is the time that they are the most portable ....
