Just a little pre-plug for a Q&A I did with the one and only Pat Coleman for TVFury, which I'll link to on Friday. Really fun one. We spent about 3,000 words talking about the grammar of St. Thomas grads, but also hit on the Mount-Whitewater rivalry, whether the Tommies could win it all, the 1936 Orange Bowl, ESPN's coverage of D3, "409," a Coleman-McMillan trivia challenge and a heck of a lot more.

Sounds like a whole bunch of talk about The Tommies...nice work! ;)

Oh, come on!

Okay, I overstated how much time we discussed that by 3,000 words.

Shock and Awe marketing.
Mere mention of the Toms tripped the "wooo something shiny" trigger in their brains. ;)

My take on the happenings in Happy Valley: I think Joe Pa has to go because he is Joe Pa, and Joe Pa is the law at Penn State. If he wanted to do something about the allegations, it would have taken one stern look at the AD and it would have been done. Fair or not, its not like this was some new coach who didn't have the power to go beyond his "higher ups." This is Joe Paterno, the king of morality, not doing the morally right thing. And its not like its even questionable that, morally, he didn't do the right thing. Its not very often that a more morally defensible option than saying nothing would have been, oh I don't know, a rufie, a call to some Italians in Brooklyn, a short drive east, the Hudson River, and some concrete boots.

Salesman (to boy on front steps): Is your mother home?
Tommy: No, she ain't.
Salesman: Is your father home?
Tommy: No, he ain't home neither.
Salesman: Young man, where's your grammar?
Tommy: Oh, she's in the kitchen baking cookies.

Regional Rankings are out:
WEST
1 UW-Whitewater 7-0 9-0
2 St. Thomas 10-0 10-0
3 Linfield 7-0 8-0
4 Cal Lutheran 7-1 7-1
5 Dubuque 8-1 9-1
6 Monmouth (Ill.) 9-1 9-1
7 Redlands 7-1 7-1
8 St. Scholastica 9-0 9-0
9 Illinois College 9-1 9-1
10 Wartburg 7-2 7-2

Can't say I understand putting Wartburg ahead of Bethel or Olaf.  Same record, worse strength of schedule.  Comparing results against common regional opponents, Wartburg beat Gustavus 26-21, while Bethel beat them 41-27 and Olaf 44-26.  Wartburg lost to Simpson 38-37, while Bethel beat them 55-3 and Olaf 31-23.  St. Olaf has also beaten Wartburgs next opponent, Luther.  Wartburg has a win over Dubuque, but that would hardly seem to outweigh the obvious comparisons of common opponents and overall strength of schedule.

Agreed A.O., and as a Tommie-backer, I would have loved to see Bethel ranked to give UST another win over a regionally ranked opponent.

... because it would very much help UST's case to be a #1 over Linfield (I assume Mount is going east, UWW is going north, UMHB is in the south and the west is between UST and the 'Cats).

Nation, to further prove I am smoking nothing, I hit you with +k.  And I need to correct my post from yesterday.  I bestowed +k on 60% of the Tomcats who posted yesterday.  The other 40%, and you know who you are, were hit with -k.  Which I do very rarely.

I think we should invite Tony Reali to govern over the distribution of karma......

.....then no one would be able to argue (because he would just mute you.)

Reali might be busy, but we could check with Max Kellerman.

The likely explanation is in bold.  A Wartburg loss to Luther would help all MIAC parties concerned, IMO.

This was posted on Facebook by Fr. Stan De Boe.  Stan attended St. John's our freshman year before returning to Pennsylvania to be closer to his family.  I thought it was exceptionally well stated and so I am sharing it here.

I am saddened by the news coming out regarding Penn State. Our prayers and thoughts should be with the many victims who regarded the coaches, players and institution with such awe, only to find themselves abused and then neglected all to protect the abuser. Imagine what those children must have felt each time that team took the field, knowing what horrors had been done to them in that locker room. The experience within the Catholic Church over the past ten years should have taught us that no institution, no person of power and privilege, no reputation is more valuable or important than the life and dignity of a child. The Catholic Church still has a long way to go to repent from the sins of its past. Other institutions of power and privilege must do the same.

What difference does it really make? SJU beat (shocked is more like it) the Cats in the Catdome in 02 & then froze the Cats in The Natural Bowl in 03- you have to beat the best to be the best. Anyone, any place, anytime if you want to be called champions. 8-)
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!
