Not being from Minnesota-but is it rare for a Northern school to make the championship game in 4A? And how many classes do you have? Is 4A big or middle of the road?

Zip,
There are six classes in Minnesota High School football,9-man and Class 1A through Class 5A.
4A is the second largest class. Yes,somewhat unusual, but I seem to remember Detroit Lakes in the past decade doing well in H.S. football.
Usually in the smaller classes northern schools are represented on a pretty regular basis. Stephen- Argyle in 9-man and  Cook County High School (going by memory) 1A  and Pierz (more "central" than "north") 2A had some nice runs in recent years.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

ROCORI and Bemidji playing for the 4A state title next weekend.  Nice to see some out-state representation in the upper divisions (even if it's not Sartell)!

Agreed!
I'm looking forward to seeing that Woods kid for Bemidji again.  The ROCORI Qb looked good too.
Only 1 private school in the finals...looks likeTotino Grace was really out of their league playing 5A...I've got to admit I kind of enjoyed seeing EP work them over.

Next year the new 6A playoffs should be interesting (see below):

PLAYOFF PLAN FOR CLASS 6A FOOTBALL - Beginning in 2012:
(Approved by MSHSL Board of Directors August 2011)
Top 32 schools – 4 sections of 8 schools
Each section seeds #1 – 8 – choice of seeding procedures based on current policy.
No game on Tuesday after MEA
Friday (day prior to section semifinals for other classes):  first round played within each section:  (1 v 8; 2 v 7; 3 v 6; 4 v 5)
Following Friday, top 4 from each section are matched with another section for cross-over games.  Highest seed from one section plays the lowest seed from the section with which they are paired.  High Seed is the home team.  Sections are paired with another section for two years and then rotate.  Initial pairing would be determined by a random draw. Eight winners advance to the State Quarterfinals.
Seed these 8 schools according to current Board policy:  Coaches vote to seed the top 4 and there is a blind draw for the match-ups.
Brackets set according to the seeding results – Quarterfinal round the following Friday – (same day that most other quarterfinals are played).
Semifinals in the Dome on Thursday Evening prior to the Fri/Sat Semifinals
Finals – Friday night of Prep Bowl
Section Championship game is now the State Quarterfinal. Teams who advance to the State Quarterfinal would receive a State Qualifier or State participant plaque since they will no longer receive a section championship plaque.
Teams who advance to the State Quarterfinal would receive a State Qualifier or State Participant plaque since they will no longer receive a section championship plaque.
Pairings for 6A:
2012 & 2013:
Section 5 vs. 6
Section 3 vs. 4

2014 & 2015:
Section 4 vs. 5
Section 3 vs. 6

2016 & 2017:
Section 6 vs. 4
Section 5 vs. 3

Any MIAC team that chooses to wear that Nike or Under Armour Combat crap should be kicked out of the league.  That stuff is hideous.  The fact the Tommies have about 6 different uniform options is a bit annoying (IMO).  That said I can see where one would think the Toms might go w/ the Combat look.
I guess I'm kind of old school and believe that a team should have one home and one road uniform.  I've always liked teams that stick with one look.

I know the Toms on this board will see this topic as nothing more than a bunch of bitter Johnnies looking for any reason to criticize UST, but hear me out.
I think it still needs to be said that a team that has more than the standard one home and one road uniform at the D3 level is beyond ridiculous.
This season, the abstract uniform concept floodgates opened upon college football, and I couldn't be more disappointed. There is no doubt that schools like Oregon, Boise State, Oklahoma State, Maryland, et al are bending over backwards to be champions of the 21st century attention economy. But, even the standard bearers of tradition like Notre Dame and Ohio State have fallen prey to this silliness on a few occasions.

I'm not saying a team should be prevented from making uniform changes from one season to the next, but when you're changing from game to game it looks like a child throwing a fit for attention.
D3 football simply doesn't have the audience for any of this uniform tomfoolery to work.
I'll admit, begrudgingly so, that the Toms are doing a good enough job talking with their game. Don't ruin it for yourselves (and the rest of the MIAC by association) by going any further with new additions to your uniforms.

You're right it does sound like a bunch of Johnnies looking for any reason to criticize UST. ;)

It's been working pretty well in WHITEWATER too.

If SJU doesn't do it, it must be wrong.

My son's high school team does it once a year at homcoming-normal kelly green and white replaced with dark green, almost black and white.

And maybe next weekend they'll be ready to break out their all pink look.... now that's something even our own "TDT" could buy into..

Make it 52,000,001 reasons ;D

I just generally dislike it when any team does the multiple uniform thing.  If I turn on the TV and the Oregon Ducks are on I usually keep clicking along.  I can't stand looking at that crap they wear.
I also consider myself a casual Minnesota Gopher fan (yes even this year) but the truth is that their different uni combos are almost as unwatchable as their play on the field.  The Gophs should go back to the style they had when Glen Mason was here:

...and never, ever do the gold on gold or the gold jersey and maroon pants again.

I actually like the current UST uniform style...very simple and not a lot of goofy striping or piping on the jersey or pants...just don't add another combination.

Not only is it rare for a northern school to make the big school title game, but in 2012 Brainerd will be the only non-metro school playing in the largest class.  I think Sartell, St. Cloud Tech, Moorhead, or Bemidji could improve themselves enough to play with the big boys, but perhaps the recent performance of Wayzata and EP is just too scary.

RE: Uniforms

UST wears different colored pants occassionally. Same helmet it has always been. Same home purple, road white.

Big whoop.

If it isn't attendance, it's gotta be something I guess.

I hate to burst your bubbles, but the Tommies have busted out the black pants on a few occasions if I remember correctly. They got them last year I think. But, I do Like the Black and Purple, It is simple and looks good.

I dont think Pierz has had 1/10th the success of their conference rival, EV-W...which usually beats Pierz in reg season and in state. EVW has 2 titles under its belt, I dont think PHS has mor ethan one if even one.

another good thing about UST's uniforms....like all the rest of the football world (with one exception), no player's name on the helmet.  But yeah, the UST unis are simple, understated and rock.

Im shocked no cracks about attendance this weekend.
