Columbia announces change in leadership for football program..

Let the search begin.   :o

A lot of teams will be firing coaches in the next few weeks. What's with the arbitrary obsession of Caruso going to Columbia?

another good thing about UST's uniforms....like all the reat of the football world (iwth one exception), no player's name on the helmet.  But yeah, the UST unis are simple, understated and rock.

Im shocked no cracks about attendance this weekend.

Me too; the attendence was low.  I was there, though, and it was miserable.  If it wasn't for my whiskey blanket I think it would have been a halftime exit.

How's this for a concession...

Given the weather conditions that was probably a pretty good turnout.

Bench;  As for Columbia, I guess I just connected all the dots along with Pioneer Press "Break Man"  Charley Walters....

we beat Monmouth in 2009, and we should not have a problem doing it again next Saturday

I think the Tommies will win Saturday. But this isn't Monmouth from 2009, just like it isn't UST. They just beat a solid IWU team on the road in rd 1.

You'll be going up against the best QB in DIII. The numbers even suggest he may be the best ever. I think UST wins, but have no problem...I think Monmouth puts up a little more fight than CSS.

I like when sports "journalists" prognosticate on Division III athletics while knowing virtually nothing about them.

If the weather cooperates Monmouth should get theirs no doubt. But saying Monmouth has the best QB in D-III is like saying Texas Tech always had the best QB in the Mike Leech era. Statistically sure. But Joe Bagofdonuts can come in and throw for 500 yards in certain systems.

Agreed.  I think this rematch presents a lot of intrigue.  It will be interesting to see how a much better version of UST does against, presumably, a much better version of Alex Tanney.

::) The "system quarterback" argument is always good for a laugh.  If that were true, you'd see lots more teams running that sort of offense.  The fact is that you need a QB with a good arm and stellar decision making to make a "Mike Leach" system go (and several viable receivers).  Brandon Weeden is an example of that at Oklahoma State.  Yes, they throw it all over the yard, but that does nothing to discredit how good a trigger-man he is, Friday night's result not withstanding.  The video game stats that pass-happy systems produce say more about the system itself than the QB playing in them, good or bad.

If you don't have a big, physical line and a powerful RB then it offers you the chance to still move the ball.  Is it the best offensive approach?  I think history would show that it's not, but it is a viable option for a coach whose personnel are not better served by running a more traditional, balanced system.

I'm not saying Alex Tanney isn't a great QB, I'm just saying he might not be the "best" in all of Division III. Like Graham Harrell wasn't the best in FBS. He just had the best stats.

If the guy with the gaudy numbers was always the "best," we'd hear a lot more about Timmy Chang and Colt Brennan and other June Jones guys. Or Case Keenum would be the talk of Mel Kiper Jr. and not Andrew Luck.

I'm sure Sam Bradford and Andy Dalton could run Houston, Hawaii (Now SMU), etc.'s offense just as effectively as these other dudes who'll wind up in the UFL or CFL.

BTW: Kind of funny that all the Minnesota kids went sleeveless and poor Terrell-Byrd was bundled up like some kind of Californian. http://www.tommiesports.com/ftbl/news/Sidebar_1119.html

At this point in my life I'd say that pride sometimes takes a back seat to pragmatism. Of course the Under Armour nylon does increase the risk of a fumble according to some.

Sure, now.  But during my playing days, you couldn't have paid me to wear sleeves for a game!!!
