BTW: Kind of funny that all the Minnesota kids went sleeveless and poor Terrell-Byrd was bundled up like some kind of Californian. http://www.tommiesports.com/ftbl/news/Sidebar_1119.html

What a sally!  :o

At this point in my life I'd say that pride sometimes takes a back seat to pragmatism. Of course the Under Armour nylon does increase the risk of a fumble according to some Roney.

I see you were subject to that line of reasoning as well. My response was usually, "If we're ever in a situation where I have the ball, fumbles shouldn't matter at that point."

Wow.  Lots of posting since my last appearance.  I'll try to catch up on what I've missed.  Can anyone provide a brief synopsis?

RE: Tommies

Just win baby as the late great Al Davis said.  I don't care what you look like on gameday.  I believe this Tommie team has an excellent chance to win it all.  UWW and MUC(k) are not dominant.  I also believe that even if Caruso wins the Nat'l Title this season he stays at UST.  No way they let him leave.  The administration has now seen what a great football program can do for your school.  Glenn can name his price.  Just the mere possibility of leaving for other jobs creates instant leverage.

Benchwarmer: Your grandmother smokes pot!!!

I attended the Johnnie/Tommie puck with the esteemed LBean last Saturday night.  Very underwhelming performance by both teams, however, it was clear the Tommies had the talent advantage (quick feet, puck movement, etc).

Time to wake up in Collegeville.  The "athletic marketing/fundraising" will dry up fast (and rightfully so).  I hope Tom Stock is nervous.

TDT,

Welcome back to the board!

Here's what I have recalled in the past couple of months on the board:

Johnnies record at 2-4.  Everyone in collegeville is upset calls for Jim Gags to take over!  ;D
They recover by winning 4 in a row to keep the winning record streak alive for Gags.  Gags announces he will coach for a 60th season.

Boston College and attendance...enough said.

UST goes undefeated in the MIAC, as they win more posters come out of the woodshed to provide insight.  A poster by the name of MrMiac shares his thoughts and is immediately attacked by the board for not supporting SJU.  Haha...JK, but seriously! His intentions were not to talk football but to ruffle feathers which he is very good at.

Carleton won 3 miac championships on one saturday.  Very Nice!

Of course the curse of Concordia not being able to beat SJU when it needs too lives on.  I will call it the curse of the Gags.  I believe they finish at 6-4.

Hamline had a tough year getting shutout on almost a weekly basis.  Coach decides not to shake Gags hand after the HAM/SJU game because he is not worthy to talk to a legend.

Bethel and St. Olaf both miss the playoffs after tough losses towards the end of the season.

Gustavus....right!  Moving on.

Duffman had a kid.  Congrats to duff.  I can get you a future Cobber shirt whenever!  ;D

I am sure I have missed some other topics that others can clue you in on.

Crossing my fingers that they can get through the first few rounds before I start spending $ to travel to the games.

Way too long of a drive for an inevitable win in a driving blizzard. Still a bit much for a probable win on Turkey Day weekend when family/friends will be in the Forks.

Being that I live a block from the Columbia football field, I'd like to take credit for creating the Caruso-to-Columbia rumor out of thin air. Pretty sure I brought it up here long before Charley ever mentioned it.

And yes, I did create it out of nothing but a bit of logic and nonsense: He turned around a D3 program. Ivy League has some D3 qualities, probably has more in common with D3 than any other division of play. Would be a great rebuilding job, Columbia's had one winning season in about 30 years. Last time they were dominant Sid Luckman played QB and Lou Gehrig was on the baseball team. Columbia's about 89th on the sports scene here in NYC but if they started winning there could be some excitement in the crowd and could get the city behind them a bit. Getting St. Paul excited about football is cool and all. Doesn't compare to getting NYC excited about college football.

This is the guy - probably the only guy - who blogs about Columbia football. He's been leading the Fire Norries Wilson brigade, but five years ago he wrote an open letter to him talking about the challenges of Columbia.

Also not sure what the Columbia job would pay. I bet it's not real great, though. Columbia's head coaches average $83,000. Figure football and men's basketball are above that to compensate for the smaller sports who are below it. Still not exactly normal D1 money.

And housing...$250,000 is not buying you much in NYC. And it's not buying you anything in Manhattan, not for anyone with kids. How about a cozy studio, this one actually near the Columbia campus?

And this from seven years ago. Even with the housing downturn, this has probably only gotten more outrageous.

Actually, the Lions were 21-6-0 from 1945-47, and Luckman was playing for the Chicago Bears. In 1947 Columbia ended West Point's 32-game winning streak, 21-20, at Baker Field. The Cadets were two-time defending national champions.

Actually, the Lions were 21-6-0 from 1945-47, and Luckman was long-gone and playing for the Chicago Bears. In 1947 Columbia ended West Point's 32-game winning streak, 21-20, at Baker Field.
The Cadets were the two-time defending national champions.

Noted. By the way, Gehrig held (probably still does) the Columbia record for most strikeouts in a game by a pitcher: 17.

I've been emailing with the guy who runs the Columbia blog. He hadn't heard of Caruso but now is researching him. I'm going to make this happen. SJU will be back on top in no time. He noted that the most successful Ivy League coach, the guy at Penn, came from a D3 school. And a previous Columbia coach who had success in the mid 90s used to be at D3 Rochester (which no longer has a program, apparently).

Fanning the flames of the "Caruso to Columbia" movement, I see.

Not being from Minnesota-but is it rare for a Northern school to make the championship game in 4A? And how many classes do you have? Is 4A big or middle of the road?

Zip,
There are six classes in Minnesota High School football,9-man and Class 1A through Class 5A.
4A is the second largest class. Yes,somewhat unusual, but I seem to remember Detroit Lakes in the past decade doing well in H.S. football.
Usually in the smaller classes northern schools are represented on a pretty regular basis. Stephen- Argyle in 9-man and  Cook County High School (going by memory) 1A  and Pierz (more "central" than "north") 2A had some nice runs in recent years.
I dont think Pierz has had 1/10th the success of their conference rival, EV-W...which usually beats Pierz in reg season and in state. EVW has 2 titles under its belt, I dont think PHS has mor ethan one if even one.
2004 Pierz 2A champions- 2005 EV-W 2A champions.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Minnesota_State_High_School_League_State_Championships_(Fall)#Football

That's a tough conference,I 'll agree with that Maniac- Maple Lake made it to state this year. Kimball will be tough next year, playing a lot of Freshmen & Soph. this season. Kimball had 3 or 4 Schefeilbein boys this year.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

SUMMIT!!!!!

my bad, Section., I thought the hometown lads had a couple titles. I know they reached the final a couple times and won the last 2 baseball championships in their class.  But it is a tough conference for sure. It used to have Holdingford when they were a power, and in the 80s (I think) Becker and Big Lake were in before the mushroomed in size.  You can be assured Caruso has heard about them :)  (altho Steve Fritz's sister lives in Kimball, so it wasnt just me talking to him)
