Interesting idea Hazzben.  Unless there is a counter argument that I have not thought of, I have to agree.

The only one I can think of is tha it's difficult to compare GPAs across schools when they have different academic standards.  But, you can make the same argument for stats and it's a better measure than anything else you could put in there.

More information is not a bad thing. I think GPA could be something great.
I thought I remember having this discussion in my SJU Athletic Media Relations days and there was some legal obstacle that prevented GPA from being part of the criteria for the Gagliardi Trophy.

I'm not sure I buy that, if you watch the SEC broadcasts they always have a scholar athlete of the game and show GPA (not sure how a 3.32 in Leisure Studies at Alabama makes you a scholar).

Believe it or not, there is a science to hillbilly hand fishing.

Well, I'm certainly no legal expert, but I know they include & publish GPA's for the Academic All-American teams. At least they did my year. I don't know why it would be an obstacle for the Gag. But then again, we've got plenty of other really weird laws out there  :o

Who posted the poll?

Don't get me wrong, I love to get a rise out of my friends on the corner of Cretin and Summit by calling it the College of St. Thomas, but are you not aware the level of sophistication of this group?!

I'm not talking about the Gagliardia Selection Show--I'm talking about the playoff selection show that used to be on ESPN.  D3 athletes deserve a little more recognition nationwide, and I don't think the gagliardi trophy helps in that regard.  For many it only confirms their feelings about d3 football as being glorified intramurals or equal to texas high school football.

I've got no beef with an football only award. But lets not kid ourselves into thinking that it would go to the best football player. It'd go, like the heisman, to the best (usually offensive) skill position player.

But that said, even though Coppage's absence is conspicuous, the list of Gagliardi finalists is a great representation of DIII. These guys aren't just smart guys who start on good teams. They are intelligent players who are also some of the finest athletes in DIII. Given the nature and philosophy of DIII, I think most years the Gagliardi award will be able to go to the best football player as well. Sometimes a great player might not qualify, but I don't have much beef with the past picks. And the finalists almost always included the cream of the athletic crop.

I know the school cannot release any student's GPA without consent. Perhaps that's the obstacle I'm thinking of?  :o

Forget hillbilly hand fishing.

There's a science to Mario Kart and Halo and Counter Strike. If we want the most well rounded college student repping us, we need to get some metrics for their proficiency in these areas as well  ;D

You could be right. But even then, what kid is going to say 'I don't want to be considered for the Gagliardi award because I don't want my GPA listed'  ???

SagatagSam

I'm surprised Pat hasn't popped in with the official ruling on why GPA is not included on the resume for the Gagliardi Trophy...

Gotta do something to maintain the false pretense.  Perfect illustration of just how low the bar is set to qualify for the award.  World's tallest midget, as it were.  ROLL TIDE ROLL! ::)

How bad can Coppage's grades be?

I could be wrong on this (I might be confusing it with the MIAC MVP voting), but I think each school can only submit one candidate.  Coppage is a lock to get all sorts of post-season honors for his football ability, but UW-W must have felt that Matt Blanchard was a better Gagliardi candidate.

Duff....you KNOW you can wear purple to the game.  And it will be the most righteous purple!   8-)

The only time you would catch me in purple at a UST game was if they were playing Mount, Whitewater, or Linfield.  ;D  I might have to bust out my Raider gear this weekend!
Sounds like a plan.  That way you can save your Warhawk hat for next weekend IF UWW and the Tommies take care of business on Saturday, that is.   ;)    8-)

A foregone conclusion...

I know UST is a lower seed than UWW however is it certain the game would be in Whitewater?

No offense but I've made too many trips to southeast Wisconsin to watch the Johnnies get pummled so to spend a day driving to watch the same happen to the Tommies would be tough to stomach.

Are you sure you're really a Johnny fan, Dusty?   ;) ;D

I am not sure about the location and I think Pat mentioned that the committee said they did not seed the brackets this year so it could be up for grabs, I guess.  But it does seem that the committee has bent over backwards to treat us as the #1 overall after we made them look pretty silly last season winning it all after they seeded us #2 in the #4 bracket and sent us on the road the last two play-off games.  My money is on the Perk IF, (not going to risk a jinx,) ;) both win this weekend.

82,
We are civil.
Unlike some others I can think of...

Look fellas, I'm just worried okay. If he was a minor in the state of Ohio he'd be removed from his home by social workers and put on a diet.

I hope you are sharing your same heartfelt concern with Ulice Payne. While at 310 lbs, he is a bit "lighter", but still a big boy... with an Exercise Science major no less.**

Now I am going to have to find my IT guy because if the Tommie website is anything like their coeds, I have probably picked up a virus.
** My apologies to Ulice for bringing you into this! :-[

This has to be a strong contender for "Post Of The Year"

The committee DID say that UWW was the #1 overall seed, with Mount being #2.

UWW is at home next week if they win.

Teams can only submit one player for consideration.  When Kmic & Micheli were seniors, Mount submitted Micheli and not Kmic.
