In a different direction, what do people think of the Surly Brewing Company?  I hear it's really popular, but I haven't tried any of their beers.  They came around after I left MN and it doesn't seem to be available out here.

If you like bold and interesting beers (which I do), Surly is awesome.  You pay heavily, though.  $10-$12 for a 4-pack of 16-oz cans for their year-round brews.  Their limited releases fetch more (I paid $25 for a 750-mL of Surly Darkness last year).

The owner/founder is a Macalaster grad.

I'd avoid the Surly Hell, though.  It's very blah.

I'd second this. It's pricey, but you're paying for the quality of the brew and I've found it to be worth every penny.

Having spent a year in D.C. I really like the local Dogfish Head products, especially their Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA. Again, not for everyone, but if you're into IPA's and enjoy a really flavorful and complex. Duff, you'd love this one (9.0% ABV  ;))

IPA = Good!

Have you had Rush River Double Bubble Imperial IPA?  Tasty, and at 9.2% ABV, it'll get you nice and toasty  ;D

Hmmmm, haven't had that one yet, but I think I saw it on the menu of the local Brewhaus down the street. They've got $3 double IPA's on Wednesdays so if it's still on tap I'll have to imbibe.

This was the place that introduced me to the 471. They haven't steered me wrong yet. Just had a my first Left Hand Milk Stout on Tuesday. It was long overdue and didn't disappoint. Great full bodied, malty winter beer.

Check out RFD in DC in Chinatown if you like beer. I'd literally close my eyes and pick one of the 5000 different kinds of beer they carry. Lots of fun.

This one's great, but you need to be careful.  It goes down really easy and sneaks up on you pretty quick.

See I knew you'd all get surly on me. Speaking of which, they do produce some tasty brews. Not a big fan of most IPA's, too hoppy/bitter for my taste. I do like most of the seasonals from the locals, fresh Schell's Oktoberfest comes to mind and makes me salivate in Pavlovian response.
I would love to sit around and chat beer and even football with you lads all day, but just got word that our favorite spearing bay on Lake Kabetogama is frozen and I must venture north. On my way, I hope to stop at the Curl Mesabi to meet up with a pal for a post-bonspiel brew in the Free Guard Zone.
No doubt this last sentence has sent some of you snobs, citiots and NY readers scrambling for your googles and thesauri.

As we say, the more danger, the better the fishing, so off to feed the family. BDB, you're in charge while I'm gone. You kids behave.

I've been there...it's only a few blocks from my house.  If you're into trying out a lot of high end tap beers in the Twin Cities, my friend raves about this place (it's a little out of the way, but the tap selection looks crazy).

All this talk about beer made me thirsty-went out and had a few Coors Lights for the liquid lunch. The chromes make me happy!

RE: Hamm's

I realize Hamm's is rather inexpensive but I would concur that it's not getting judged for taste. Rather, I believe the indictment from the beer bigots is for the pungentness of one's flatulence the next day. Which I think is unfair.

Second both RFD, which is four blocks from my office, and Dogfish, which is a must-stop on trips to Wesley for their Rehoboth brewpub.

Also, while it might be a bit far north of Georgetown for our cocktail circuit gadfly, the Rodman's on Wisconsin has great selection. Not sure about Summit, but they carry Bell's Two Hearted Ale, which is excellent. Then there's the standard Yuengling, the liquid first aid kit in the back of the man cave fridge.

Duff - after seeing pictures of your dog on here, I'd be particularly careful.  He could probably wield an exceptionally large firearm.

On another note, my favorite beer place in DC has to be ChurchKey/Birch & Barley.

SUMMIT!!!!!

sorry to disrupt the flow of beer conversation,  but one of our vendors just became a huge favorite....they send in a couple dozen warm, fresh chocolate chip cookies from tankgoodness.com... they taste like the ones your mom/grandma used to make when you were small-- fresh out of the oven.

not sure how they'd go with beer, but they sure are good!
