all this beer talk must be affecting the voters ability to cast a rational vote on the victor of Saterday's game... ;)

I submit that no true Minnesotan (or Wisconsinite) is rational without a beer in him or, at the very least, within arm's reach of him.

I submit that us Fisher fans will be pourin some out back East in support of our Cards at high noon on Saterday...

funny...but wrong east conference....check the Liberty League for 'that' style.... ;)

interesting though that it seems that the 'rivalry' between the johnnies and tommies (both on field and socially) may be similar to Fisher-Ithaca, in that IC has the long-storied program with National Championships, and the private school Fisher burst on to the scene and took over...

From the talk on here, I sense the same thing going on between UST and SJU....?

Nuclear Reactor 1 is heating up...

I don't know much (read: anything) about the IC-Fisher rivalry.  But unless it transcends football and has been around since 1901, I cannot conclude that it has much (read: anything) in common with the Tommie/Johnnie rivalry.

A lot of people will say the lore goes back to when Ignatius O'Shaughnessy attended St. John's and was kicked out by the monks for drinking. Only to go on to St. Thomas where he was a football star and eventual large donor to the campus of St. Thomas.

Two years ago it was reported 16,000+ showed up to the Natural Bowl in Collegeville for the UST/SJU game. For 12 straight years SJU had their way with UST. With Gags patrolling the sidelines and 4 National Titles it wasn't too often UST got the better of SJU over the last several decades. And then something changed. Some say it was the recruiting and coaching of one Glenn Caruso. I say it was when I borrowed the infamous cow cup from Sagatag during the Stiftungfestivities. After many Hamm's it looked like the 2010 game was going to be remniscent of the 2009 game, and when OT inevitably arrived, it looked like the teams would trade TDs until UST blew it like they did in '09 and like the refs did in '08. But as I took a swig out of Sagatag's cow cup something magical happened after the Johnnie TD. Perfect snap, perfect hold...and then..."DUNNNNNG." UST fans stormed the field, the cow cup I threw into the air in jubilee. A Johnnie fan kicked me in the leg and I tripped down a hill. No matter, I was estatic.

When I returned for post game bevvies, my Johnnie PP friends were no longer thrilled to have me around. Their mood had shifted. I made mention that "It was finally a rivalry again." "You win once in 12 years and you think it's a rivalry?" scoffed one Johnnie. Maybe they were right, maybe this was a once every two decades thing.

A few minutes later Sagatag implored me to locate his cow cup. But in my excitement it had gone missing. I tried in vain, but no luck. I promised I would buy him a new cow cup. A better cow cup. And when the 2011 "Holy Grail" game arrived, Sagatag was nowhere to be seen. He was off defending our freedom somewhere in Dixieland. With no Sagatag and no cow cup to drink Hamm's out of, UST beat SJU 63 to 7. Thus, the "curse of the cow cup."

Which is why I will make a Cow Cup trophy for 2012's tilt.

Bah...meltdown? You flatter yourself.

What to do tonight? Do I go to the Big Brother/Big Sister fundraiser at Ninkasi where 25% of any pints I purchase will benefit the organization or do I go to the Holiday party at the bookstore with free (cheap) wine/food and 25% off everything. I have tomorrow off either way, so bring on the drinks! 8-)

While I don't have a dog in this SJF-UST catfight, I do have an important question: what the hell is a "cow cup"?

bennie, bennie, bennie.  You were a good girl at school, I can just tell.  You don't have to choose.  The bookstore will close first.

Yeah...I only heard stories about Sal's and the La! ;) Actually, the fundraiser runs from 5:30 until 8:30pm and the bookstore event runs from 6-9pm.

SJFF82, I don't know much about  the Ithaca/Fischer rivalry.  But I do know there are some big differences with the St. John's/St. Thomas rivalry.

In the beginning, St. Thomas was the big guy on the block.  Until 1958 St. Thomas was very dominate.  From 1958 through 2011 the record is 42-12 in favor of St. John's.  After losing to St. John's from 1998 to 2009, St. Thomas has won the past two games.  This year by an embarrassing margin.  Potentially the start of a trend, but certainly not yet a trend.  Over the past 10 years Bethel has had much more success than St. Thomas.

St. John's and St. Thomas are both private, Roman Catholic universities.  They have more things in common than many care to admit.  Both formerly all male schools.

Note:  St. John's "sister school" is the College of St. Benedict, a mere 5 miles from Collegeville.  It is more like one school with two campuses where the boys and girls are supposed to go home and nite and sleep in their own beds.  This has been gradual.

The two student bodies (I'm lumping SJU and CSB together) have very similar demographics, in almost any category you want to examine.  There are kids who opt for St. Thomas because they want to be in the "big city" and kids who opt for CSB/SJU because they don't.  There are those who love the outdoors who elect CSB/SJU.  Both schools turn out lots of accountants, MDs, lawyers, school teachers*.  The cost to attend is very close.

Prior to St. Thomas going co-ed in 1979 or thereabouts, and going on a growth spurt that has only recently begun to flatten out, the two schools were very, very similar.  Hence, I believe, the deep seated rivalry.  It's almost like sibling rivalries.

*St. John's has turned out 2 US Senators and 3 Congressmen.  As far as I know, St. Thomas is at zero one Congressman.  Both our former US Senators, in the spirit of the Benedictine tradition of serving their fellow man, have been employed by St. Thomas.

Jim Oberstar is a congressmen who attended St Thomas, only one I can think of

Stormy, I stand corrected.  Didn't know that, even though I've been following him for over 40 years.

Things I've learned from this board:

1. SJU has the best attendance in the country, which means the Tommies Suck
2. UST is on the verge of replacing Boston College in the ACC
3. People east of Ohio are very sensitive about their football and get offended when us Minnesotans talk a little harmless smack  ;D
4. If you haven't been blown out by Mount Union or Whitewater multiple times, you're nobody
5. Glen Caruso will be the next coach of Minnesota Columbia South Dakota Illinois representative for Minnesota's 4th Congressional District.

Updated, though I wasn't sure if he was more likely to be elected in St. Paul's or St. Cloud's district.
