Two pass plays w/ under 1:00 to go isn't trying to run up the score?

Don't get me wrong, you guys are damn good but come on that was horse ****.

Difference in philosophies I think. Over the years I think the MIAC, whether it be SJU, Bethel, UST or Concordia has had the mindset that you play the full 60 minutes. I think if the ball was on the 50 you would've seen them take a knee, but Caruso is losing a lot of talent next year and no doubt wants to give his freshmen/sophomores some playoff experience. UST has been blown out in the past, and I don't think anyone has called Gags (SJU's coach) "classless." That's just the way we play in this part of the country.

And to those that say, "I hope UWW puts up 50 on you douche bags." UWW would've put 50 up on you without batting an eyelash. Same with MUC/

I suppose that's possible, if by "this part of the country, you mean Minnesota, or St. Paul, or the St. Thomas campus. It certainly doesn't extend to the entire midwest.  In round one, UW-W won 59-0. They didn't throw a pass in the fourth quarter. On their last drive, they moved inside the 10. They then handed off up the middle twice. The back up QB then took a knee twice on 3rd and 4th down, even though there was too much time left on the clock to completely run it out.  Albion got the ball with about 1:30 left.  They ran out the clock without incident. It seemed to me a classy way to end the game.

I wasn't at the St. Thomas game, so I can't speak to what happened there. But I just wanted to go on record as to how UW-W handled a similar situation.

I'm guessing UWW's back-ups had a lot more PT in a 59 to 0 game than UST's did today. UST threw on 3rd and long and otherwise just ran the offense. Any other pass plays were short naked/bootleg run/pass options for our freshman QB that is a similar player to Dakota. And the ball was at midfield when Terrell-Byrd rattled off a 40 yard run to put them inside the 10. Was he supposed to stop and allow the SJF players to tackle him? It's not like UST was taking 50 yard shots down field.

It wasn't "classless."

And it's not as if UWW hasn't put up 60 or 70 on an opponent.

You may have been addressing Upstate, not sure. But as I said, I can't speak to what St. Thomas did today.  I was just addressing the "regional" aspect of your post.  I know coaches have certain things they want to accomplish and good coaches handle situations differently. Bill Belichek couldn't care less about what others think of him. Other coaches may feel like taking a knee is a better way to handle that situation.  These situations have come up enough for all of us to know there are different views of it.  If you throw two passes in the final minute to give your back-ups work, so be it. Just don't be surprised or offended when a segment of the population voices their disapproval of that approach.

Any team in the quarterfinals of a national tournament should have enough pride to stop a 2nd/3rd team offense in the 4th quarter.

The better team, from the better conference, in the better region won handily today.  This was an expected result, and it was nice to see UST live up to expectations.

Very conflicted on next weekend.  While I'm disappointed I won't be making the trip to Whitewater, my consolation is sitting 5 rows up at midcourt for my first game at Allen Fieldhouse for Kansas/Ohio St.  A decent consolation.

Go Tommies, let's see if UST has taken the next step.  I will be ravenously chewing up my phone's battery checking the score.

I personally have never really got the whole running up the score thing.  The game isn't for protecting people's feelings.  I think some are being oversensitive here... including the fisher announcers.

Half directed at SJF fans, half describing what happened.

The last barb was just pointing out that it might be possible there were times when UWW could have been accused of the same thing. But as Sfury pointed out, it's a nice problem to have.

Sorry dude but you don't throw the ball up 25 on 1st and 2nd downs with under 1:00 left in the game and then run a play action fake on the 9 with under 30 seconds to go...

SJF was still throwing at that point in the game.  SJF wasn't giving up and taking knees, so why should UST? SJF has the same opportunity to give up and run out the clock as UST.

Sorry, what's crap is the way your team played today!  Other than the opening drive, your team was awful.  UST made adjustments early and your team never had a answer.  Your defense would struggle stopping most teams in the MIAC!
In regards to UST running up the score; it's not their responsibility to worry about your team!

As a neutral observer:

I realize there are HUGE differences between d3 football and youth soccer, but SOME rules of sportsmanship apply regardless of age.

As a soccer coach, I was on both sides of 11-0 games.  I was far less embarassed to lose 11-0 than to win 11-0.  In the former, we were simply not good enough (and the other coach was a 'dick'! ;D); in the latter I kept wondering what could I have done to keep that from getting THAT out of hand?

Even at the college level, you do not attempt a fake field goal up 25 with 5 minutes to go, and you do not keep passing with under a minute to go.  You just don't.  Caruso appears to be a really good (and generally classy) coach; today was not his best day.

WashedUp

First off, UST scored 10 second half points and rested their starters for much of the half.

It's not Caruso's job to make sure the opposing teams players feel good about themselves.  It's his job to do what he can to make sure that his team wins the game he is playing and all future games.  If he feels the best way to do that was to get his backups some game experience and rest his starters (in some cases, for an entire half) I'm not going to argue with him, he seems like he's proven himself to be a fairly competent coach.  He ran his offense and the other team couldn't stop it.  It sucks, I've been on the wrong end of blowouts (I guarantee I've taken the worst college loss of anyone on this board).  Was I embarrassed?  Yes.  Was I upset?  Yes.  Did I blame the other team?  No, we didn't execute and they took full advantage, with starters, backups, special teams, defense, the water boy might have scored one or two in there.  We took that ass-whooping and came back the next season better prepared and turned an 85-28 loss into a 21-7 win.

You're saying that one team should keep playing out the game and the other team should completely change how they are playing and give up to preserve another teams feelings.  That is a huge load of BS.  This is the playoffs and the number of games you play is finite.  No way you should sacrifice reps and playing time to make sure the other teams' fans cry a little less afterwards.  Both teams play out the game, the winning team moves on and the losing team remembers the feeling and works even harder to make sure it doesn't happen again.

You guys came to the MIAC board, immediately decided that we were all a bunch of arrogant a-holes, declared our conference was weak and had never seen a team like SJF, and now the problem is UST went too hard?

Yeah that tends to happen when you play a great team with the 3rd string QB...

Quoted for truth...

Whether its things like faking FGs and throwing on 1st and 2nd downs up 25 very late in the 4th Quarter or kicking FGs down by 40+ to MUC as SJF did a few years just to say they avoided being shut out (and I ripped them for it and felt embarrassed for them doing so).  There are things in sports during blowouts you just don't do and it goes both ways...

I'm sorry, forgot to mention that your defense was awful today too!
Must have been the scout "D" playing, your two deep all must have been hurt to.
Not trying to be an ass here, just sick of all the excuses.
Your team had a great run, with some luck, and today it ran out.
Move on and be grateful for the opportunity to have played.
