It's hard to believe that I've been connected to campus for almost a decade now and I still find stuff that I was completely unaware of.

The tunnels under campus are pretty cool.  And there is some interesting stuff on the mezzanine in the Great Hall.  Best thing I found on campus, though, was the abbey's storage room for booze.  :o

I had heard that one of the tunnels led directly to one of the booze storage areas, but the monks caught on to students lifting a case or two from the cache. That tunnel has since been sealed off.

Another cool area is in Guild Hall (aka, the Old Gym, Rat Hall, etc). If you go up the spiral staircase by the post office, you will find the old basketball press box. The original plans for the building said the purpose for that room was to be a "boxing room."

Did the bowling alley survive the Rat Hall renovation? Some great but clouded  3 a.m. memories there ...

Picked up a couple of books on the advice of some folks here...American Assassin and Minnesota 13.

I'm about 4/5 of the way through American Assassin, and have enjoyed it a lot.  Problem is, I'm stuck in my cube today, only thinking about reading it...

I hope that everyone had a Merry Christmas, and safe travels.

Edit: Finished it up tonight.  Fantastic.  It includes a teaser for "Kill Shot".  Is the the best choice for the next read in the series?

I see now that "Kill Shot" isn't available until February...I guess I will have to be patient.

Negative. The bowling alley has been gone for a while. Perhaps we'll bring it back someday...

Minnesota 13 is a great one. I bought it and read it within a week of it coming out. I'm pretty sure there were members of my family involved in the manufacture and distribution of some of that 'shine.

I know that members of my family were involved.  My grandpa told me some interesting stories from that era.  Unfortunately, he passed away at the ripe old age of 95 last week, so his stories are left to my memory.  I've suggested that my dad read Minnesota 13 as I am sure he will recognize some of the names in the book!

my two cents worth-- now go back to the first one of the Mitch Rapp series, as American Assassin is essentially a flashback to pre-Transfer of Power

Series
Mitch Rapp
1. Transfer of Power (1999)
2. The Third Option (2000)
3. Separation of Power (2001)
4. Executive Power (2002)
5. Memorial Day (2004)
6. Consent to Kill (2005)
7. Act of Treason (2006)
8. Protect and Defend (2007)
9. Extreme Measures (2008)
10. Pursuit of Honor (2009)
11. American Assassin (2010)
12. Kill Shot (2011)

Those should keep you busy for a while  :)

I just finished Transfer of Power, great book.  I thought Term Limits was the start of the Mitch Rapp series of books, the library is requesting that from another branch for me.

From what I've read about the series, "Term Limits" is essentially #0 in the Mitch Rapp series.  It has some of the characters from later novels, but is before Rapp's career began.

Yes, "Term Limits" is basically pre-Rapp....he is a minor character while many of the other recurring characters appear, most in bit parts. Its main character is a Minnesota Congressman (from Grand Rapids if I remember correctly)... it is an excellent read but not part of the Rapp cannon.

It always strikes me as funny how Flynn goes from nearly broke before a publisher picks up Term Limits to being able to thank Carl Pohlad for the use of his cabin in the acknowledgements a few books later :)

I've met Vince a couple of times (through business) and he is a genuine guy.
There are many self-made people, creative types & business people, that I know who follow that same "rags to riches" story. It's nice to see people succeed because of their own brains & determination.
Example: my sister went to high school with a gal that came up with the idea of the flashing lights in the heels & toes in the kid's sneakers. She was (I believe) on government assisted housing & food stamps when she came up with that little gold mine of an idea.
Fishing & hunting gadgets also seem to be invented by salt of the earth types who love what they are doing & keep coming up with new ideas. 8-)
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Flynn talked about the delayed release here:

His cancer treatment has been a bear.

On the topic of fictional characters...anyone read the Jack Reacher novels by Lee Child? Only started reading them a few years ago and blasted through all of them since. Reacher's awesome and they come out every year. Tom Cruise is going to star as Reacher in a movie. Now, I'm a Tom Cruise movie fanboy, through all the couch-jumping and bizarre Scientology statements. But...Jack Reacher is, as Wikipedia notes:

Quote
Reacher is a giant, standing at 6' 5" tall (1.96m) with a 50-inch chest, and weighing between 210 and 250 pounds (100–115 kg). He has ice-blue eyes and dirty blond hair. He has very little body fat, and his muscular physique is completely natural (he reveals in Persuader, he has never been an exercise enthusiast.) He is exceptionally strong but is not a good runner.[3] Reacher is strong enough to break a man's neck with one hand (Bad Luck and Trouble) and kill a villain with a single punch to the head (61 Hours) or chest (Worth Dying For).

Sounds just like Tom Cruise, right? Agh.

Like Maniac said, I'd go back to the start of the canon and work my way from there. The books build off each other plot wise. If there was one book to read out of order it was American Assassin. But I'd go back to the start now. Enjoy!

Knowing that our daycare provider has U$T daughters, I sent our son to daycare like this today:

Apparently, they got a kick out of it.  It turns out that her oldest worked for the U$T football program a couple years ago and also babysits for Coach Caruso's children  :o
