Interesting.  Bummer for Carleton.  I wonder where he is going.  And if he's staying in football.

I just hope it doesn't kill our recruiting like when Brann left.

Well, you're going to sit on an interim coach for a year, so this class may be a bit sparse.  I had to read the last sentence of the article twice to make sure I understood it correctly, but I'm pretty sure Carleton plans on playing a year with a temp coach and then hire a permanent for 2013.

I wonder if that means this was a complete surprise for them?  They didn't announce the interim coach so it seems that they didn't even have a plan in place.  One would assume it's one of the assistants.  The oddity of the plan also implies that they may be re-evaluating Kurt's personal 'Coach like John' approach.  A national search means that style is still up for grabs.  Anyway, interesting.

I hear that the interim coach will be Pagel, the defensive coordinator.  If this is the case the culture will change rather significantly from what it was under Ramler.  We may even take a snap from under center next season.

And I don't expect a full class, but it has to be more than four players and only one starter or Carleton is in a lot of trouble.

That is very unfortunate for Carleton. According to my sources, it sounds like they didn't exactly give him a lot of support. He got a little when he first showed up, but then started to peel it back when the team became more successful around 2008.

I'm torn. I always thought he'd be a great guy to follow in Gag's footsteps. He's not over-the-top-with-bull$hit (*cough*CARUSO*cough*), but yet he'd have a lot of new energy to bring to the program at SJU while knowing the core principles of the Johnnie football tradition and carrying them forward.

I sincerely hope for the best for Kurt.

Too bad for Carleton  :-\

I am interested to see what Ramler ends up pursuing.

Don't be shocked if Ramler takes the head coach job at UST after Caruso leaves in a couple of months.

Caruso will most likely skip the college jobs and jump right into a NFL position with the Rams, Dolphins or Bucs. (If Meidt can do it so can Caruso, I am sure he has some "ins" somewhere).

Bold Prediction: Leslie Frazier will not be the head vikings coach at the beginning of 2012 season.  I will cross my fingers for John Gruden or Brian Billick.

Duff,

Have you been able to get any ice fishing in this season?

I volunteer a bit at our local hospital.  Last night, I ran into a woman wearing an SJU Football sweatshirt--obviously a Johnnie mom.  We chatted a bit.  I told her when I played at SJU and her response was, "Oh, when they were good."  That kind of made me sad  :-\

I don't think I have ice-fished in three years.  Bring on spring.

An interesting article in light of NDSU's upcoming championship game, reflecting on Concordia's national championship game vs. Sam Houston State in 1964.

While I would love to see Gruden or Billick (especially Gruden), I think frazier is here next year, per Paul Allen's argument. (as much as he annoys me greatly sometimes)  They're paying childress through next year already, if they got rid of frazier, they'd be paying him next year anyway, in addition to a new coaching staff.  Just for business reasons, I don't think Wilf would be willing to be paying 3 coaches at once.

I don't want any part of Gruden, he comes off as completely disingenuous as an announcer and there has to be some carryover to his personality as a head coach.

Looks like the Vikings are in contact with Raheem Morris, potentially for D-coordinator.

Do you honestly believe the UST athletic department could stomach hiring a Johnnie for one of it's most visible head coaching positions? I could see an assistant position somewhere in the department (only because a former SJU All-American long jumper is on the T&F staff right now) but not a head coach.

Yes you do want Gruden!  He is a smart, good football coach.  He would have control of the team from day 1 and wouldn't let crap slide like childress or frazier has.  Plus, he would be able to develop Ponder into a decent QB.  He was Favre's QB coach in green bay.

Raheem Morris would be a nice addition to the vikings staff.  However, the vikings need playmakers if they still plan to run a Tampa 2 defense.  I believe the vikings will end up trading the #3 pick in the draft to obtain more draft picks.  Someone will need to draft RG3 (rober griffin-baylor).  If they don't trade the pick I would like to see the Tackle from USC to be a viking!

Duff, I thought you would be an ice fisherman.  Bring on spring?  It's here!  My neighbor took his lund down to lake city to fish on part of the Missippi River that's open right now.

Probably Not, but just think of the possibility of 2,000 fans at each home UST game if they did hire him!

No, I don't.  He's a career .540 coach who's reputation stems almost entirely from one season leading a team that he didn't help build.

Better than frazier who is a career .272 coach!
