New gopher football uniforms....I like them.  They didn't go crazy.  Less is often more when it comes to uniforms, IMO.

I also stand corrected, as apparently some absurd parents (including, possibly some cougars) did complain about cougars. Although I still don't think law schools are to blame.  8-)

You're right, it is the school board that made the decision, but only because of the (somewhat but not entirely irrational) fear of being dragged through court.
So much of what is done in today's society is done to defend against a frivolous legal battle (see: defensive medicine) brought on by an excessively litigious--or what the author of the book calls "overlawyered"--society. It was never my intent to spark any kind of left vs. right, liberal vs. conservative, blue vs. red battle by the political leanings of the book. The intent was to point out that perhaps we have paralyzed people by the threat of someone being "offended," or someone with an advanced law degree looking for "standing."
In essence, my statement was right and wrong at the same time. There was no throng of 40-something, silicone-enhanced women picketing outside of the school to force this decision, but there was a hypersensitivity to the thought that someone could come along and try to sue.

The most enjoyable part of the story is certainly coming up with descriptions of the types of ladies who might have been protesting. Throng and silicone-enhanced go well together.

I should have gone with my first instinct and just blamed the whole state of Utah.

Didn't know that about long prairie.  Grand Rapids was once also the "Indians" but became the "Thunderhawks".

I for one am offended that Indians are apparently unfairly associated with Thunder, as seen by 2 schools trading their "Indians" name for a name including thunder.

Sauk Rapids went from Indians to Storm  ;D

Belgrade (Mrs. Duff's alam mater) went from the "Redmen" to the Jaguars when they consolidated as Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa.

A tradition unrivaled...

I'm sure Bench would help you out with your legal defense...

Are we at a place in our society where a very small, but vocal minority, drags the silent majority through the dirt on an almost daily basis because nobody (in the silent majority) wants to be accused of violating another person's rights?

Rights are right, but when some parties take a well meaning situation and turn it into the bizarre the average American loses faith in the well placed intentions of the original work.

Are we approaching the point that some group such as PETA sues to stop the use of nicknames/mascots such as:
Lions
Tigers
Bears
Rams
Gophers
Cardinals
Eagles
Hawks
Bison
Wolves
Wolverines
Badgers
Jackrabbits
and the list goes on and on, because they strip these magnificent creatures of their dignity.

Or an agnostic group could be offended by team nicknames/mascots such as
Saints
Blue Devils
Sun Devils
Friars
Demon Deacons, etc.. as this group does not believe in God and could be offended by these nicknames.

There are much bigger problems in the world to worry about than the nicknames of athletic teams.

That is my take on the situation, now back to your regularly scheduled programming.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

PETA may not sue, but Mizzou was either sued or was threatened to be sued by Disney back in the 80's because they said the re-imaged tiger looked too much like the one in Jungle Book. The state of Wyoming forced the Breckenridge (MN) Cowboys to alter it's logo because the silhouetted cowboy on the bucking horse was too close to their state marketing logo.

My old Wahpeton Wops became the Huskies back in the 80's, apparently under the protest of the vocal Italian contingent in southeastern ND  :o. You may be thinking, "I had not idea "wops" was a derogatory term for Italians." Neither did anyone in NoDak.

I just noticed this morning my shower drain is stamped "Sioux Chief Mfg". Time for a remodel??

I believe "Trojans" has broader sexual connotation than does "Cougars", not to mention the Gamecocks and Horned Frogs.
If the human brain were so simple that we could fully understand it...we would be so simple that we couldn't.

As long as someone can find a court that will accept their case (which is apparently every time) ... yes.

dont forget the saga of Devils Lake (ND) High....they were the Devils for decades before evangelicals forced a change. then they were the Blaze till someone pointed out the marijuana connotation. So now they are simply "Devils Lake High"....sad commentary on our times.

Years ago the high school team in Pekin, IL changed their name from the Chinks - believe it or not. The high school team I've come to follow in my neck of the woods is Big Foot high school in Walworth, WI The name comes from the Bigfoot Indians. They still have the nickname Chiefs. That's not why I follow them, but ir's an added bonus.

Still can't get a movement for U of North Dakota to just change the spelling to the "Fighting Sue" and have the silouette of a lawyer with a briefcase.

So Just read on footballscoop a Division III Head coach from a Minnesota school is a finalist for the Head coaching position at Southwestern University in Texas.  Any word on who that maybe?

Glenn Caruso, guaranteed  8-)

Not a chance Glenn C is going to a DIII school in Texas that is reinstating football and hasn't played a game since 1950.  Any chance it's Ramler?  I believe Southwestern in the alma mater of "Purple Pride, Purple Passion" Red McCombs.

No really, I'm guaranteeing Glenn Caruso is offered and takes this job. And if not the DIII TX job, I absolutely guarantee he will beat out Jim Tressel for the Indianapolis Colts job.  ;) 8-) ;D

Ps. In case you still haven't noticed, I was being sarcastic the first time  ;)

I was quite sure you were full of sh-t initially.  I'm still curious who might be the Minnesota coach that is a finalist for the job.  Gotta think it would be difficult for a Minnesota guy to go down and coach football in Texas...almost as difficult as it might be for a coach from Georgia to head north and coach the Pipers.  8-)
