I was quite sure you were full of sh-t initially.  I'm still curious who might be the Minnesota coach that is a finalist for the job.  Gotta think it would be difficult for a Minnesota guy to go down and coach football in Texas...almost as difficult as it might be for a coach from Georgia to head north and coach the Pipers.  8-)

Maybe you just answered the question.

Might make the trip up to Ottertail county worth the drive.

RIP Joe Paterno

I hope that he can.  Cynical me thinks that now that he is gone he is going to be the fall guy for the scandal.

Speaking of team names, my all-time favorite is the Macon Whooppee of the ECHL, logo above. Note the fig leaf, and the bird and the bee...

He will always have a black mark on his legacy for what happened, so in the court of public opinion he may receive the blame.
However, since they didn't formally charge him with anything while he was alive, I find it very difficult to believe it will happen in death.

I kind of think that the opposite will happen.  He is now St. JoePa.

He was an exceptionally good man who was human.  He appears (I will not rush to judgement) to have made a mistake.  His stature magnified the mistake.

RIP Joe.  I am honored that I was able to witness your 400th win.

You're right, it is the school board that made the decision, but only because of the (somewhat but not entirely irrational) fear of being dragged through court.
So much of what is done in today's society is done to defend against a frivolous legal battle (see: defensive medicine) brought on by an excessively litigious--or what the author of the book calls "overlawyered"--society.

Are we at a place in our society where a very small, but vocal minority, drags the silent majority through the dirt on an almost daily basis because nobody (in the silent majority) wants to be accused of violating another person's rights?

Rights are right, but when some parties take a well meaning situation and turn it into the bizarre the average American loses faith in the well placed intentions of the original work.

Are we approaching the point that some group such as PETA sues to stop the use of nicknames/mascots such as:
Lions
Tigers
Bears
Rams
Gophers
Cardinals
Eagles
Hawks
Bison
Wolves
Wolverines
Badgers
Jackrabbits
and the list goes on and on, because they strip these magnificent creatures of their dignity.

Or an agnostic group could be offended by team nicknames/mascots such as
Saints
Blue Devils
Sun Devils
Friars
Demon Deacons, etc.. as this group does not believe in God and could be offended by these nicknames.

There are much bigger problems in the world to worry about than the nicknames of athletic teams.

That is my take on the situation, now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

I disagree ROR, I think anyone linked to the scandal will now cry that they told JoePa and it was up to him to "fix" the problem and claim they did all they could.  It's easy now that he can't defend himself.

Reusse tweeted that Wayzata QB Nick Martin is going to St. John's. Seems like a great get.

But here's where D3 recruiting is tough and why the cries of "St. John's recruiting has faltered" don't always ring true. A few years ago the Johnnies recruited the state-winning QB for Wayzata, who led them to the big-school title. They also recruited an outstanding player from Baltimore who had been getting 1-AA looks. The Tommies, meanwhile, recruited a QB from little New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva. No one would have thought the Tommies won that recruiting battle. Yet that kid ended up leading the program's revival and took them to the national semifinals. You never know.

Still, if Martin's going to the Johnnies, it's a nice recruiting job.

I would bet that most anybody that watched the 5A Minnesota state championship would not be terribly impressed by this.  The QB's and passing games of E.P. and Wayzata were below par.  Maybe the Martin kid is better than I recall, however SJU has had a number of Wayzata QB's over the years and not had much for results.  I hope he proves me wrong and I would love to be there to shake his hand in Salem in a couple of years.

In the "Where Is He Now?" section of MIAC PP. And a clearer image for those of us who are a bit slow on the uptake as to just what that handle meant.

Also, check the Philadelphia Daily News later today for the Paterno-Gagliardi angle.

Years ago the high school team in Pekin, IL changed their name from the Chinks - believe it or not. The high school team I've come to follow in my neck of the woods is Big Foot high school in Walworth, WI The name comes from the Bigfoot Indians. They still have the nickname Chiefs. That's not why I follow them, but ir's an added bonus.

Still can't get a movement for U of North Dakota to just change the spelling to the "Fighting Sue" and have the silouette of a lawyer with a briefcase.

Back when I lived in Alaska, there were (and still are, I believe) the Aniak Halfbreds.

But changing names isn't really that new of a thing. My dad and I went to the same HS. He graduated in the early '40s as a Blue Devil. I was pardoned in the early '70s as a Mustang.

Watch the highlights against CDH or Carmel (Ill.) if you want to see a wide-open offense.  The Wayzata-EP game was more about the elite level of the two defenses.  Martin is better prospect than Ries was.  Ries may have appeared to be a little better than he actually was in HS as he was throwing to multiple D-1 receivers; Fritz Rock at Illinois, Cecil Doe at Hawaii and Matt Tarpley at Ole Miss.

I don't know if I'd give full credit to the Johnnie coaches for recruiting Nick---he may have gotten a little advice from his QB coach.

I have become increasingly skeptical of the thinking that the Johnnies must own the Twin Cities in recruiting to be successful. If memory serves me correctly, there was only one, two or at most three members of the starting defense on the '03 team that were from the metro. Right now, I can only think of Cam McCambridge (Edina). Jeremy Hood was from Buffalo, but I don't necessarily consider that "metro." The offense was more balanced, I think (Keating, Clintsman, Diley, etc.)

Don't get me wrong, we've got some great kids from the metro over the years and we still need them. But, I think we would be better off getting some of those kids from the out-state that are easily overlooked because they don't get the same publicity as the metro kids.

It's kind of the Moneyball theory of D3 recruiting.
