We always hear about the guys that came to SJU and were successful playing both sports (i.e., Cole Deibele being an All-MIAC performer in both football and baseball in 2003), but there were far more guys that came with the intent of playing two sports. Most ended up only playing one. Several ended up quitting both by the time we graduated. My point is that the vast majority of the guys that come to a D3 school intending to play two sports rarely finish that way.

I'm a big supporter of Frank.  I reckon he does very good content, particularly on the Johnnies.  Of course, I'm not interested in any other local content (me being a Northern Minnesota boy).  So, I guess I don't really matter as I represent the overseas, non-revenue generating, little local connection consumer that drives profits right into the dirt.  Probably not the SCT's target audience.

My criticism isn't so much of Frank aside from the Limbaugh article (which I don't oppose him writing, I just find it strange to put it in the sports pages. Perhaps that's the editors fault and not Frank's). I agree that Frank does a good job with his Johnnies/Blazers coverage.

The big problem I have with the SC Times is their general tone deafness or being late to the party on other stories.

The Hawks are looking very dangerous this pre-season.  They destroyed the Melbourne Demons this past weekend and the Hawthorn goal kicking superstar, Lance Franklin, kicked three magic scores, including one from 60 meters, maybe 65 yards.  Video here.

Congrats to Matt Pfarr (4th) and Dustin Baxter (2nd) who wrapped up all-America honors for SJU at the NCAA Wrestling Championships this weekend.  Baxter lost the championship to Wartburg's Byron Tate, who won his third consecutive title (he also held his own among stiff DI competition at the Midland's tournament this winter, where he placed 6th).

The Johnnie's placed 11th as a team.  Wartburg took the team title with Augsburg placing second.  Concordia-Moorhead took 13th.

So is it time to do a story on the Auggie Tech program for The Guillotine? :o To change the subject, hopefully many of our posters are gearing up for St. Patrick's Day this Saturday. ;D I will be heading to Belle Plaine for the parade Saturday afternoon. I had the privilege of being one of the three judges yesterday for the Ms. Shamrock coronation in Belle Plaine.

I did a google image search for "Ms. Shamrock Belle Plaine" and this is the first one that came up...

Rare privilege indeed... :o

We're celebrating in the metropolis of Padua, MN.  The bar is actually attached to what was a church!

Great article.  In high school, I remember my dad telling me, "You can go anywhere except Augsburg."   ;D  Of course, back when he was wrestling, SJU was probably more dominant.

Here is a little site that I think some of you might be interested in : http://ope.ed.gov/athletics/InstList.aspx
It is the Equity in Athletics Data Analysis Tool page (set to D3 Minnesota schools). It allows you to look up how much a school is spending on their athletic teams (and per athlete) and average head coaches salaries (amongst other things). For the record, St. John's and St. Ben's aren't on here because it is a tool to compare spending on mens versus women's sports. Being single sex schools, there is no comparison to be made. Ah *consumer information, you are interesting! 8-)

*schools are required to report certain things as part of their consumer information. If anyone wants more info on where to look on a schools website to find stuff, let me know. It is all information that is suppose to be available to the public, so it is not "secret", you just have to know where to look!

What is a Title IX administrator looking for in these numbers?  Looking at the U, it's pretty hard to understand how they can't afford a new practice facility or to pay for most of TCF without state help when those teams have an annual operating profit of $10Million and $15Million.  They also list a significant amount of not-allocated revenue of $23Million, which I assume probably comes from things like the Big Ten Network which is really making money off the football and basketball.
