I am thinking of buying a small used fishing boat.  Here where I live in NJ several of the lakes and ponds only allow a trolling motor.  Is a minnakota a good motor?  I have noticed that a majority of the boats in my price range have a minnakota trolling motor.  This would be my first boat purchase.  Thanks for any guidance you can give.

Really, Minn Kota and Motorguide are your two options for trolling motors.  Frankly, Minn Kota motors are multitudes better than Motorguide.  Any idea what motor?  Are you talking transom-mount or bow-mount?

Still in the looking stages, most likely a bow mount.  I am looking for a 12-14 foot boat and probably about a 9 horse outboard as that is what allowed on most of the reservoirs and lakes that allow engines in my area.  I am fairly new to fishing from a boat, mostly I stand in streams and fish for trout but want to start fishing for bass and walleye.  Good thing about the area I live in is there are a lot of great places to fish within an hours drive or so but many of them need a boat.

Of course what we call a lake you probably call a pond, and what we call a pond you probably call a puddle.

Nearly 30 years ago, a few of us chipped in to buy a Minnkota as a wedding present (even though the wife wasn't much of an angler), but to this day the trolling motor and the marriage are -- to the best of my knowledge -- solid. And Stalker, now living in NJ as well.

Fins, do you have an iPilot?  I want to add it to my Terrova, but that's a lot of coin!

I just learned that SCSU's baseball diamond is named Faber Field. Roll on Animal House!  If I had known this 20 years ago I would have been out there practicing my drives and aiming at Nedermeyer's horse.

Mr. Ypsi

OzJohnnie,

Looking at my globe today, I was struck for the first time (d'oh!) just HOW much smaller New Zealand is than Australia.  The fixation of Aussies on Kiwis seems as bizarre as if (right-wing) Americans fixated on some small island nation like, say, Cuba.

Oh, wait. :P

[This is meant as a tongue-in-cheek geographical observation, not a political comment.]

And if anyone believes that, I'm sure that Mr. Ypsi can make you a good price on the Mackinac Bridge.    ;)

So many other observations could have been made, but Ypsi just happens to pick one, that is not very good, since it's not true, but also happens to be a put down of those with whom he disagrees. Disingenuous? You make the call.

My original reason for posting at this unusual time was a story about Mike Zweifel from Dubuque getting a tryout with the Packers. Look over on the IIAC board for the info. Typical WIAC balderdash about league strength.

I figured some of you would appreciate this! Here is an article about UO's spring game and their tribute to the troops. The videos brought a tear to my eye...but I am a total sap! Crazy to think they had 44,000 show up for a scrimmage. The "price" for admission? Non perishable items of food for the food bank. They collected over 72,000 pounds of food. What a win-win!!

Duff-
Unfortunately, my boat is rigged with a transom mounted tiller model, but I do have a birthday coming up...

A buddy I fish with has one, though, and they are definitely the way to go.

Be easy on Ypsi as I'm not sure the Kiwis will be. Comparing New Zealand to Cuba is the true insult.

The tiny little Kiwi Isle is the world's King of Rugby, they have cornered the world's milk distribution market (Really. Fontana moves almost all milk internationally on the planet), and has perfected the art of man-sheep love (incorporated as a tax free organisation called WeBaa or Wicked Evil Bony A$$ Abomination).

And what claim to fame can Cuba make?  None. They can't even beat out the North Koreans in the tyrranical oppression and starvation of a people. Cuba can't even keep the targets of its persecution in country as individuals and families regularly escape to freedom in Amercia (unfortunately New Zealand also fails at keeping their rabble locked up).

So you should all save a tear for poor, disparaged New Zealand. As low, baseless and generally undeserving as that little island is, the poor buggers have been maligned even further and most unfairly.
