And you're absolutely right about not paying if you don't think you can get anything out of it. Totally valid. It's the readers who do complain simply because they're used to it being free for so long that get annoying.

I have yet to beome an online subscriber to the Strib. About 2.5-3 years ago I actually had M-SU home delivery. Eventually though the amount of time I wasn't reading it outweighed any value I was actually getting from it. Part of the reason I haven't gone w/ an online subscription is I can find similar coverage on free competitors (MPR.org, TwinCities.com) and still get valuable info from Stib writers through Twitter and online postings.

Fury, do you have on online subscripton to the Srib? Curious if being in NY makes a MN boy more or less likely to have one.

I have the Strib and NY Times online subscriptions, but not the SC Times or LA Times (Lakers rube, I've nearly taken the plunge a couple of times but haven't yet. If they make it to the Finals...).

Being away probably made me more likely to get the Strib subscription. If I was in MN, I'd either have a print subscription or would just be more aware of the local stories and might not need the access beyond the free stories you can get each month.

I'd love to see some sort of pricing like cable TV where a lot of sites get bundled together for one flat fee. I say that knowing full well that the cable subscription model is also broken. There's just no way I'm going to pay only for the SCTimes, but if my subscription gave me unlimted access to all Gannett sites, well...that wouldn't seal the deal but it would be a start.

Hasn't the NY Times little experiment in combining the print & online versions sputtered?
I heard (but don't have hard number's to back it up) that the NY Times is now the #3 newspaper in the country, behind USA Today & The Wall Street Journal. I would believe in a ranking like this they would combine print & online readership, but I am not sure. Also, isn't the NYT in dire financial condition, selling their building & trying to get concessions from the various unions that put out the paper? If this is accurate it seems very ironic that they find their situation similar to other businesses they have reported about negatively in recent years for similar requests to renegotiate union benefits.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Hey Bennie,

As I watch my nightly Stanley Cup game,(when I'm not helping coach my son's baseball team, like finsleft did in the day. But that's a whole 'nother bunch of posts  ;)) I can't see a clear favorite. Looks pretty even across the final 8 although I'm hoping the Caps beat the NYRangers because I just don't like the Rangers.

What do you think? Blues, Kings or just maybe the Devils! (see I'm BDB so there you are..) Home teams are 23-35 fercrissakes.

Awesome hockey so far, but 3 OT's going past midnight are cutting into my beauty sleep. No prob for you out west though I'm sure you love those.  8-)

And I reckon he just made a trip to Philly where he shows the same judgement in picking crime victims as he does in picking his football winners...

Alas, it was the Association for the Blind BOOKSTORE, and the clerk was not blind.  But I loved one of the comments: If someone yelled 'fire' at the School for the Deaf, would there be a crime? 8-)

Reminded me of an incident some 25-30 years ago.  My best friend (blind) was victimized by an armed robber.  Being drunk (and probably stupid), Rob chased after the guy!  He was a very successful high school wrestler and might have killed the guy if he caught him.  (And I'm very grateful he was not shot in the pursuit - the punk was so shocked he simply ran for it.)   The lowlife punk never was caught, which might be just as well because the community was so outraged there might have been a lynching.

What if your mate had grabbed the wrong guy?  "No, not him!  Him!  No, NO!  Not him, him!" the bystanders would have been yelling.

Croc news?

Giant rogue croc eats nine pet dogs

"Crocs are an ever-present danger but you don't see them," [Officer Casey] said.

"They can sit for days on end on the other side of the river and watch you go fishing off the same log or rock - that's how they hunt.

"Next thing you know, bang, the dog's gone."

Speaking of TDT, I did a tour of the state prison in St. Cloud yesterday and thought I might run into him during the tour. Evidently he was on supervised release and in Fergus Falls. ::) I did get to meet the warden and learned that he played football for the Gophers. He was interested in coming to a Johnnie game this fall. One more celeb for the Stiftungsfestivities!

I will admit that I have not been watching all that closely this year. It is definitely a "tallest midget in the circus" kind of year when I have to go with the team I am most ambivalent about as opposed to "my" team. That being said, I am with you in cheering for the Caps! 8-)

I was in Menard's today picking up some supplies and I saw a guy wearing an Augsburg Football sweatshirt. This was just not "any" Auggie Football sweatshirt,it read "MIAC Champions 1997"- the shirt was in remarkably good condition for the 15 years old it is, no visible rips or tears. You don't think they made reprints of that year's model,do you 8-)

I belong to a very prestigious and ancient golf club, the Brighton Golf Club, at the very royal and ancient Brighton Public Golf Course ("We're better than average because we play with clay in our bunkers; only sissies need sand").  This month's newsletter has another good story at the end:

I would like to share an experience with all of you about drinking and driving.  As you well know, some of us have been known to have had rare brushes with the authorities on our way home from the odd social session over the years. A couple of nights ago, I was out for a few drinks with some friends and had some rather nice red wine. Knowing full well I may have been over the limit, I did something I've never done before .... I took a bus home. Sure enough I passed a police roadblock but as it was a bus they waved it past. I arrived home safely without incident, which was a real surprise, as I have never driven a bus before and am not sure where I got it from! If you know of anybody missing a bus please let me know so I can arrange to return it.

Now that is funny!  I had a sad bit of nostalgia this weekend.  I went through my closet to rid it of some excess t-shirts that either no longer fit or were getting really ratty. I had to toss out most of my SJU championship shirts.  :-[

Of course, if I only had one, I would have preserved it, as well!

A tradition unrivaled...
MIAC Champions: '32, '35, '36, '38, '53, '62, '63, '65, '71, '74, '75, '76, '77, '79, '82, '85, '89, '91, '93, '94, '95, '96, '98, '99, '01, '02, '03, '05, '06, '08, '09, '14, '18, '19, '21, '22, '24
