Welcome back, Clark.  It's good to see you here again.

One of your relatives is playing for the Essendon Bombers in the AFL.  His name is Brent Stanton.  You've got to hand it to Bombers supporters, though, as they make Tommie backers look immeasurably loyal.  From B Stanton's Wikipedia page:

Early Life
When Stanton was seven years old he had already become a two-pack a day smoker. He attended Banyule Primary School and Viewbank College. He now resides in Northcote. Rumours have circulated that Brent was in fact, booed by Essendon supports as he emerged from his mothers womb.

The relatives in Canada and Australia were the ones sent out by the English magistrates on the convict ships.  8-)

Some two dozen people responded to the small ad on the Internet, one offering a 'special dungeon' on his farm that he could use.

From Charlie Walters:

"The University of St. Thomas football team, which will have a senior class next season with a 29-1 record its previous three seasons, has three former Gophers who transferred two years ago: center Curtis James from Edina, and fullback Willie Schneider and linebacker Harry Pitera, both from Cretin-Derham Hall.

The Tommies, who finished undefeated in the MIAC the past two seasons and hold their spring game Saturday afternoon, also have recruited 6-foot-8, 300-pound offensive lineman David Simmet from Hill-Murray, as well as linebackers Kit Snyder from Wayzata, Tim McClanahan from Cretin-Derham Hall and T.J. Patrias from Holy Angels.

The Tommies have seven players, including Snyder, McClanahan, Simmet, Patrias and Esten Weber from Dawson-Boyd, who will play in the Minnesota prep all-star game. The Tommies also have five players, including tight end Ryan Himes from Somerset, who will play in the Wisconsin prep all-star game.

Sam Sura, the South St. Paul running back who was the Pioneer Press player of the year, has decided to attend St. John's rather than Augustana, which he initially considered. "

Gopher transfers? Ha.

Dang. The Tommies got 12 or 13 certified superstars and all we picked up was one pissy little Pioneer Press running back who chose the Johnnies as an afterthought. Do you think Mr Walters can loan me some kerosene to light my hair on fire while I run in circles rending the flesh from my back?

Please remember to record and post on you tube if you do this.

Here's a bit more detail on UST recruiting:

The kid from San Francisco St. Ignatius who is going to Tommieland is a pretty good player - made first team all city.  (I will note, however, that SI lost to Marin Catholic, where #13 went to school - a bragging point among my two kids since the older one attended SI.)  It's impressive to me the way that Caruso seems to be cherry picking kids from other states.  SJU could do the same thing, but so far as I know they don't even try.  The out-of-state kids who end up at SJU seem to be legacies or have some other prior connection with the school; only one or two, like us, just fall into their lap.  I know an SJU alum who is coaching in Colorado and had some good players he thought would be good fits for SJU.  He tried to get the coaching staff to reach out to them but nothing happened.  This needs to change.

A specific action plan to achieve this could easily be set up,but would take coordination and implementation from the coaching staff and athletic department. An army of student assistants could be given a list of criteria to be on the look for and be assigned a geographical area- then start combing the local online sport sections, then on to Rivals or Max Preps. This would be the "raw" list handed over the the recruiting department. This is basic sales prospecting, where as lower level associate (student assistants) beat the bushes and funnel the prospect list to the Sr. Sales Staff (recruiting dept.). It would be some work but potentially would open up new territory of undiscovered talent. It's a lot easier to sell (recruit) someone who isn't getting offers every day. Making the most of the opportunity is up to the recruiting department.
New media---> Facebook, You Tube, Rivals, Max Preps et al.. is where the kids hang out, it's not very often that they land in the lap of the recruiting dept. except in the situations that Tmerton mentioned above such as legacies and the very rare occasion of #13 ending up half way across the country with no connection to the school.

They don't have to do anything nearly that ambitious really.  They could simply reach out to some of the schools where they have contacts - where some players have come from (e.g., #13's high school) or where they have alums (e.g., the SJU alum coaching fb in Denver), get in touch with the coaches and let them know what they're looking for.  Or just ask Caruso how he does it.  ;)

They won't do any of this, of course.  But they could.

The alum network seems very much in the mold of Gagliardi. So much so that I'm surprised it's not already SOP.

I would weigh in on the recruiting debate, but I feel I won't be adding much to the conversation.

Instead, I'll bring it to the attention of all the Bennies and Johnnies on the board that Mat Kearney, a Universal Republic recording artist that has put four singles into the top 40 charts over the years, just wrote and recorded a song about CSB-SJU titled "Bennie and Johnnie" after an acoustic performance at "12 Pines."

I think it's pretty cool, especially since Mat's 2006 "Nothing Left to Lose" album was the soundtrack to my senior year at Saint John's.

From Mat: "As we drove away from 12 Pines, the most energetic acoustic show I have ever played, I kept seeing in my mind two young people, cars packed full, pulling out of their driveways, leaving home to become a Bennie and a Johnnie for the first time. I got out a note pad and started writing their story, which of course was a love story. I recorded the song in my home the next day. I thought it would be make a nice thank you for a memorable night."

(By the way, 12 Pines is apparently the new name for what used to be Pinestock).
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright.

Very nice...maybe Matt will play a set at UST and write a song about the Anderson Center.  That would be a beautiful thing.
