What sort of meds are they handing out at Georgetown cocktail parties these days?  I want some.

Codeine and antibiotics...I've had acute bronchitis and pneumonia for the past week. :-\ So do you have a substantive response?  Look at the D-I FCS schools.  There are plenty with lower endowments, smaller student bodies, and perhaps less interest in gaining a place on the national-level stage.

Can you please stop with this substantive response crap?  You write four paragraphs of poorly structured love note about your school of yesterday and expect us to argue with you.  I could give a rat's a$$ about your Tommie obsessions.  Enough of the BC of the Midwest lovestory already.

You know another way that UST could build a reputation for excellence?  Be more selective in their admissions.

Agreed on more selective admissions, but on the poorly structured love note bit...I must protest.

Good God, does UST replace the humor detection gland with a Bud Abbott straight man organ during Freshman introductions?

Yes, it could be that we Johnnies are scared senseless by Caruso and desperately want him to leave and end this reign of terror. Or, it could be that UST fans are so obviously scared that it might actually happen that we can't resist tweaking you.  If we have a guilty pleasure, it taking advantage of the emotionally disabled.

All teasing aside, I'm actually interested in people's opinions on UST going D-I FCS.  I was back in the Twin Cities a few months ago and the campus is buzzing about big changes coming.  The President, Dean of the Law School, and Dean of the Opus College of Business are all stepping down and people talk about heavy academic hitters coming in to replace them.  On the athletic side, people talk about the "beginning of a new era" for UST.  I'm not really sure what that means, but for football that could mean a move to (perhaps) D-I FCS over time.  Do people think such a move is possible?

The idea of moving up divisions is a fool's gold. Schools that make the leap to higher divisions are incurring a massive added cost for a miniscule gain in visibility.

Study shows most athletic departments lose money
By MICHAEL MAROT

INDIANAPOLIS — Most of the nation's college athletic departments are still trying to get out of the red zone.

The NCAA's latest report on revenues and expenses, released Tuesday, showed fewer than 25 percent of all Football Bowl Subdivision schools made money in 2007-08, while the remaining 302 schools competing in Division I struggled to break even.

Twenty-five of 119 FBS schools reported overall profits, an increase from 19 in 2006.

However, if there were a school in the MIAC that is most likely to chase after this sort of fool's gold, it would be the folks on the corner of Cretin and Summit.

It has been hashed and rehashed on here often, but the bottom line is it aint happening. First off, a school cannot move just one or some sports "up" to a different NCAA classification-- it's the entire athletic program or nothing  (exceptions had been grandfathered in about 10 yrs ago for Colorado College hockey, Johns Hopkins LAX, etc.). There is no D-I-FCS other than in football-- all other sports would then be required to play at the D-I level. Do you think UST will sacrifice its entire athletic program just for football??? Not even Notre Dame is that football-centric.  There are NCAA mandates to consider- for example, hockey must have an on campus arena in D-I (exceptions were grandfathered in),.... where on the UST campus could they build a hockey arena? (not the UST/STA facility doesn't meet this requirement for D-I). As long, proud and strong as UST's hockey tradition is, do you see the school folding it??? Do you think UST would fold its track/field program? The costs involved in competing in TF at the D-I level, primarily scholarships and travel, would make that not feasible. Same for swimming/diving and most of the women's programs.  Even if UST could move just football to D-I FCS, the cost would be in the millions of dollars. Not happening.

It seems like every 3-4 years somebody starts the rumor that UST is going to jump up to big-time college athletics, and, as if it were rehearsed, a small group of alums begin to fantasize about what that will look like.

This is a tale as old as time--like Santa or the Easter Bunny--and there is a new group of children that come up through the UST system that have their hearts broken when they find out it isn't real.

Thanks for the replies...sounds like a non-starter.  I think the rumors start up because: 1) most people don't really have access to the administration/Board of Trustees so it's difficult to know their intentions, 2) UST is very entrepreneurial and people are apt to seek out areas for growth, and 3) in the past donors have dropped millions of dollars on their pet projects at UST and more people seem to be talking about athletics nowadays.

Except, most athletic programs are not attempting to make money, they spend what money they earn from basketball, football and hockey in a few cases and ask for more.

Why stop at FCS?  Georgia Southern is going to make the move to FBS. "The athletic budget at GSU is about $12 million, which is around $3 million less than NDSU's total budget ($14.9 million this year). GSU officials believe they need to raise another $4.4 million annually to make the FBS leap with the biggest chunk going from 63 to 85 scholarships."

What are you trying to say by this statement? Didn't you just prove my point that most athletic departments use their revenue sports to subsidize some of their non-revenue sports, and then still come to their respective administrations with a hand out asking for more money to cover the rest?

That schools like to spend money.  They're not interested in using football profits to lower tuition.  There are benefits to having an athletic program at the D-1 or D-3 level that do not show up in the athletic department budget.  Schools like Georgia Southern see that value, maybe St. Thomas will too.  It would certainly make more sense to discuss this after we can at least get some sort of reliable rumor, but it seems possible.  I don't know that many administration types would shed tears if forced to jettison hockey if they really wanted to jump to D-1.  Who knows what those people are thinking about.  Nebraska-Omaha cut football and wrestling to move up.

Since I can't throw around money like UST....does anybody have mechanic in the Twin Cities they would recommend to do some AC work on my VW Passat?  I'm told it needs a new compressor...I can find a new compressor for about $500 but would need to find mechanic that would install it.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'll be traveling to DC and northern Virginia in a few weeks to visit my bro-in-law and his family.  Our nieces are excited to meet their newest cousin, and I am excited to imbibe in the fabled Yuengling, which I have yet to taste!

Maybe Mr. MIAC can hook me up with a meet & greet with all the DC bigwigs that he pals around with!  ;D

Can't promise anything on the bigwig front, but let me know when you're in town.  I can show you a few cool establishments and the Yuengling will be on me.
