One more win and the Tommies are in the WS!

St. Thomas ousts No. 1 Marietta in Division III baseball

Dylan Thomas pitched a complete game, leading St. Thomas to a 3-1 victory over defending national champion and No. 1-ranked Marietta on Sunday night in the NCAA Division III World Series in Appleton, Wis.

The No. 4-ranked Tommies (40-8) will play Wheaton of Massachusetts at 4:30 p.m. Monday in the winners' bracket of the eight-team, double-elimination tournament.

Thomas (8-2) threw 149 pitches in his longest career outing, and he struck out two batters with the bases loaded in the ninth inning. It was his eighth victory in a row and lowered his ERA to 2.25.

The Tommies, who had 10 hits, took a 2-0 lead in the third inning when Tim Kuzniar and Charles Bruchu had RBI hits.
uh,....they ARE in the World Series, its been going on since Friday...that was a 2nd round game. Marietta is not ousted merely beaten...Strib cant get anything right. At this point UST & Wheaton of MA are the last 2 unbeatens, with Marietta and Cortland St alive with 1 loss each. But UST is assured no lower than a 4th place finish, and is hoping to add a 3rd NCAA title... it it was an utterly masterful performance by Dylan Thomas to be sure!

EDIT--- UST lost to Wheaton and will play Cortland Tuesday while Wheaton takes on Marietta. UST simply needs to win 3 more :)

They didn't oust Marietta, either. Marietta is still in the tournament. :)

You're in a groove, Hazz.  Now expand your horizons to some other MIAC schools ... 8-)

Hey, we're not even supposed to dance at Bethel, much less watch videos of people dancing. I was already expanding my horizons!  ;D

Aw, c'mon, I understand the no dancing edict was lifted years ago - besides, I'm only asking your pen to take another twist.  Don't the Oles and the other Lutherans in St. Peter deserve some attention?

Yeah, they did. Dancing is alive and well at Bethel.

The problem is the other MIAC teams just don't have anyone nearly as colorful as Caruso and Gags.

Now, if Meidt were still at Olaf, we'd have some great material. He'd be doing the video, but riding a war horse (i.e. shetland pony) around Northfield, dressed up in a leotard that looked like a Napoleon uniform (complete with plumy hat), shooting all the Carleton haters with a bb gun pistol and waving a plastic sabre. At some point the horse would probably buck him off though  8-)

I guess the Big Foot hunter at Hamline is just too easy of a target for your next music video ::)

If I knew what that was it might be a possibility  ???
Look at the third paragraph  8-)

Also, a thread from last fall highlighted the same subject. Just search "John Pate Bigfoot" on this site for a thread at the end of the season- mid-November.

Panties are in a bunch down here because of on-ice action.  My call: old time hockey and in the spirit of the game.  The hit and the fight are fine.  Penalties and ejections handed out.  End of story.  Am I wrong?  Do we need to obsess and weep?  Can men not be men any longer?  Must we descend into a society of marshmallow padded sissies where every hurt and scrape is condemned and coddled?  I say NO!  We can resist the tyranny of the smiley faced concern trolls who judge us unable to manage our individual risks.  Viva la Revolucion!!!

A little bit of Australia that appeals because of its innocently backward ways. I'm half watching the first episode of the Oz version of The Amazing Race which the wife has on TV. One team is a pair of mates in which one of the guys has a birth defect and only half a left arm. His name, nick name actually, on the show?  Sticky.

Seems that the UST should/could/would go D-I conversation has spread to the Star Tribune.

Absolutely some of the worst suggestions/opinions/notions I've ever seen under that article.

1) Schools cannot pick and choose which sports they go D-1 in. Most schools that are D-1 in college hockey/lacrosse have been grandfathered in. Some have suggested UST go D-1 in men's basketball only...NCAA won't allow it.

2) A school's enrollment size has nothing to do with their athletic program. Unlike high school, colleges recruit their athletes before they get to school. There are few exceptions at a smaller school of course (ie. a Neil Anderson playing pick-up ball every day and dominating varsity starters, a football coach noticing Steve Groth clearly demonstrating he's a superior athlete to everyone (but not much of a basketball player) while watching JV hoops game). UST has 10,000 students, but half of them are in a masters program either in Minneapolis or remotely online.

3) STOP suggesting D-2. D-2 is horrible in every way. It's the logistical nightmare of D-1, with the academics of JUCO and the atmosphere of an abandoned tire plant.

I'm happy where UST is at. If they wish to make the jump at some point I can certainly understand why. I just hope it's done with some pragmatism.

Yeah, I agree that D-II wouldn't be worth the pain.  D-I would only happen if some MAJOR donations were in place and even then the whole athletic program would have to be restructured (also, the fan base would take time to grow).

I don't agree that the upward trend in academics/entry requirements would have to reverse with a move to D-I.  There are plenty of top academic institutions with competitive D-I athletics (Stanford, Notre Dame, etc.).

I too am happy with UST staying D-III.  I think the focus should be on academics, which with the new professorships/scholarships and the development of new programs seems to be the case.  Athletics should play a central role in building campus community and increasing the visibility of UST at the national level.

1. Maybe the rule is stupid and could be changed.  No good rule has exceptions for people who have a long history of breaking the rule.

Maybe the whole MIAC would consider going D-1, but stay non-scholarship like the Ivy league?  You'd get more media coverage from the occasional upset over a strong D-1 than you do for a D3 championship.
