ROR, where did you go wrong?

My son is inundated with Tommie propaganda at daycare.  I'll have to get him to Collegeville soon to set him on the right path.

I'll go to my grave asking that question.

My advice:  let the St. Thomas propaganda flow.  Do a very soft sell on SJU.

Regarding being able to pee in your own yard,

When I lived in Washington I had a decent size piece of property.  It was fairly wide open.  Those around me were larger.  My neighbor had a big a field with a heavily wood hill at one end.  The view of the top of the hill was well shielded by trees and other vegetation.  The neighbor allowed me I could dump all my grass clippings, leaves, shrub clippings, etc. down his hill.  My wife noticed that I would make frequent trips to the hill without anything to dump.  She was not pleased when I informed her of the purpose of my trip.

QuoteWhat's changed is not just traffic and parking congestion, problems of property upkeep, litter and noise; it's neighborliness. Many student renters don't introduce themselves and can barely be bothered to say hello or make eye contact. Many of them don't seem old enough to live on their own, judging by their lack of toilet training. On one occasion I pulled up to my curb to see two college boys — one in the house to the east, one in the yard to the west — urinating in broad daylight.

"Knock that off or I will call the police!" I said.

"Sorry!" said the boy in the yard.

"Hey, I live here," said the other, the one taking aim from his front steps.
Local author hates Tommies.

All she wants is to trade cucumbers!  Grow up and give her your vegetables or you'll be evicted!

Sounds like she should be less upset at the students, and more concerned with where realtors/UST are putting their off-campus housing. during my time in college I did just about everything she complained about (minus the car stealing). I was young and stupid, which is a dangerous combination when living on your own for the first time.

Heading to DC next week.  Any of you east-coasters have recommendations?  Keep in mind that I will have a wife and 8-month old along with me.
Hope you have a good trip.

Unless you're ready to drop big bucks, don't stay downtown. Get a place on the Metro line and don't try to drive in .. at least during the workday.

Zoo is close to two Metro stops and easily walkable/good for strollers. Would an 8-mo like a zoo yet? It's been nearly 20 years since repete jr. was that age so I don't recall. If you do go, get out at Cleveland Park on the way there and Woodley/Adams Morgan on the way home -- both Metro stops are only a few blocks from the zoo, but if you do it that way, you'll walk downhill each way.

If you need a break from the museum/monument scene there are a couple of cool options: we take folks out to the C&O Canal NP at Great Falls, MD, where you can walk along the tow path and see the Great Falls of the Potomac. Depending on where you are, it can be a bit of a drive, but it's worth it to get out of the city. Close in, the Teddy Roosevelt Island is right across from the Kennedy Center and Watergate in the middle of the Potomac. Parking is on the Va. side.  Lots of trails and a great break from the marble and asphalt.

We used to get visitors on an on-off bus called the Tourmobile. That's gone and there are similar things, but can't recommend any. Tourmobile was great because they had DC ... and the Arlington Cemetery service. There are plenty of powerful, emotional places in DC, but the stories of so many patriots makes Arlington the stop that our visitors talk about most. It's hilly but if Duff Jr. enjoys the stroller, it should be do-able.

Avoid eating in the museums if you can. Most of the options are crap. Exceptions are the Native American Museum, which is my fav, and a chi-chi place in the National Gallery.

PM me what you're looking for an where you'll be staying and I can send some specifics ... including brew advice.

Sounds like child abuse to me.  You may as well put the Duffster on a plane to Guantanamo.

Looks like Fritz Waldvogel had a pretty good pro debut in Germany with 5 TDs.  Below is a link to a rough translation of the game:

The admissions standards at the University of Minnesota and the University of Wisconsin are higher than St. Thomas.

Wow, you obviously don't get it, ROR - it's Notre Dame, Stanford and St. Thomas - and not necessarily in that order.

Good for Fritz.  Love to see kids continuing to play for the fun of it.  Stay safe.

Man, some people on this board have the remarkable ability to pick up on the most imaginary of intimations.  No one drew a direct comparison between Stanford, Notre Dame, and UST.  Stanford and Notre Dame were cited as examples of private universities that maintain top academics while participating in D-I athletics.  UST aspires to be a top academic institution with strong athletics, which some people see as including a move to D-I.  It's clearly worthwhile to consider whether other private institutions have done the same.  Not to sound too pedantic, but the examples of Minnesota and Wisconsin are less appropriate because they are flagship state schools, not private institutions.  It seems that some people think a reference to Stanford or Notre Dame, while talking about UST, amounts to implied parity.  I guess some people see "UST propaganda" everywhere they turn.

Can it be agree that SJU supporters are not sustaining this UST to DI conversation?

SagatagSam

This "UST to D-I" talk is like a persistent weed that keeps growing up in the middle of the yard.

Apparently, the StarTrib had nothing better to do than to re-post an opinion piece from a UST student, and now suddenly it is miraculously some kind of major story. Let the rumors of the "Super-dee-duper Secret Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious D-I Transition Feasibility Study" begin anew!

SUMMIT!!!!!

I received an email from Dark Starr Friday morning, seeking help in confirming a rumor he'd heard. I followed up on this and it turns out his sources were impeccably accurate!

Here then is Dark's final scoop (RIP Dark), hich I felt I should share here before passing it on to the media:

St. Thomas IS moving to D-I. They will be joining the newly created Pan American College Conference for Christ (PAX-ACC). The conference will compete in all sports and will become a member of the BCS, with a guaranteed slot in any football playoff as well as multiple auto-berths in all other sports. Schools will be required to field teams in all sports.

The conference will consist of two divisions. Joining UST in the Papal Division will be Notre Dame, Boston College and Georgetown (SJU was to replace Georgetown in football and hockey, the NCAA would nto allow this, even after a Papal dispensation and threats of exoommunication).

The Protestant Division will consist of Brigham Young, Baylor, Oral Roberts and Liberty University.

TV contracts have been drawn up with ESPN, CBS, NBC, ABC, CBN and EWTN.

There is talk of expanding with at least one if not two four-team Heathen Divisions... possible members include USC, Texas, THE Ohio State, Stanford, Northwestern (of IL), Harvard, Yale and Vanderbilt.
After the game, the king and pawn go into the same box.

You mean "The Vanderbilt University".  From the school's website:

"Remarkable continuity has characterized the government of Vanderbilt. The original charter, issued in 1872, was amended in 1873 to make the legal name of the corporation 'The Vanderbilt University.' The charter has not been altered since."
