Here's the little Duff and myself at the Lincoln Memorial.  I just could not get over how impressive a structure that thing is!  It is definitely worth seeing.  It would have been even better had the reflecting pool had water in it!  :-\

The WWII memorial is beautiful and brilliant. It's setup and detail to the battles, theaters and quotes is awesome.

I think what sets The Wall apart is just the sheer volume of humanity and personal sacrifice represented. It is simple and tragically profound. The WWII memorial seems like just that, a memorial to the War and the men who fought it. The Vietnam memorial seems more like a community tombstone. It's just impossible not to be overwhelmed by the emotion of all those names and the lives and families they represent.

Moving stuff...

Everyone needs an excuse to go to Hawaii - so go check out the "Punchbowl" national cemetery in Honolulu.  In addition to the thousands of graves of those who died in WW II they have tens if not hundreds of marble slabs with the names of thousands of men whose remains were never recovered.  The Vietnam Memorial is wonderful and moving (especially for those of us who were involved in that war), but I have found the scope of the loss you get from visiting one of the national WW II cemeteries to provide me with a profound source of gratitude and respect for those who served.

Hear, hear to our veterans and fallen citizen warriors. Lest We Forget.

Love that shot of you and the Duffster, Duff, by the Lincoln Memorial. I read your post this morning when I got up. Later as I was walking by the Mac on the way out the door, the screen saver was showing a picture we took of a "just like new" statue Augustus Ceasar in the Vatican almost two years ago (That long?  Damn.). I sure hope 2000 years from now Lincoln is not some near fabled figure dug out of some ancient aristocrat's ruined garden.

78 days until kickoff. Anyone found a solution for listening to streaming RealMedia on an iPad yet?  I desperately want to lie in my warm bed on a Sunday morning at 4am with a pair of earphones this year.

Just in case Tom Stock or any of the Gagliardi's happen to read this post....It's time for SJU to get on board w/ live video web streaming.  If you keep finishing 2nd or 3rd in the league you won't have attendance issue to worry about anyway.  Start promoting and marketing the program by showing it on the web.

This is never going to happen with the current football leadership. I've made my thoughts known to the athletic department, even letting them know that I am more than willing to pay a lot of money to watch it streaming.
What frustrates me most is that all I get from athletic department officials is a shoulder shrug when the idea is brought up, like they're not even trying.

Then they are CLUELESS!!!!  The arrogance of the this 3rd/4th place/rate program is really starting to annoy me.  Only 8 seasons removed from an undefeated National Championship and they have only managed to regress.
If they are worried that other teams are going to get an edge by getting extra film on them then they are utterly paranoid.  A 7-3 record in 2010 and a 6-4 record in 2011 tells me that the opposition is doing just fine without the assistance of a webcast.

Looks like there's another beer to test out...any volunteers?

I'm intrigued.  Is it in stores?  I couldn't find any "where to buy" information on their website.

I'm a big fan of all the craft breweries popping up.  Just a couple of minutes from my place, Steel Toe Brewing in St. Louis Park has some tasty beers. (the IPA and double red are my favorites)  They're also small enough that you can buy it directly from the brewery in growlers.  I wish that were the case with all breweries...MN has some frustrating laws.

Did you get to check out the National WII Memorial?  I'm a veteran who's often visited both memorials, but for some reason the Vietnam Memorial seems to have more of an emotional impact.
Yes, the WWII memorial is beautiful and impressive, but I found the Vietnam memorial more emotionally impacting.  There's just something about all those names.
Listing the US military deaths in WW-II would require a wall five times larger...

Do you remember the scene in the Band of Brothers were the soldiers are resting in the church.

As they recall the names of the guys who subsequently die, their images fade away.  That, too, is impressive.

That's why Larry Kehres doesn't stream his games at Mount Union. You can only watch the game locally (on a delay), I believe.

I feel like this season will be a pivot point for the future of the SJU football program. A competitive 9-1 or 8-2 season will be a sign of the ship being righted in Collegeville and 2010 and 2011 will be written off as a mere hiccup. A non-competitive 2012 season with a 63-7-esque drubbing at the hands of UST or a 41-20 loss to Bethel will send the Johnnie faithful into a frenzy.

Some are speculating that a number of administrators just want to get John to 500 career wins and wait for the inevitable PR boost that comes with it to make the football program visible on a national scale again and stimulate the competitiveness of the program.

I hate to say it, but they are going to ride the "John Gagliardi is a swell guy" horse until it's dead, and then stand there completely unprepared for a new era of SJU football after John.

Ummm... I streamed the 2010 Bethel-MTU playoff game live. As the home team MTU should have had the option to prevent that (unless there is something on the NCAA's books that would prevent them from exercising that right in an NCAA playoff scenario.)

There is a wall of stars at the WWII memorial with each star representing 100 US casualties.  As you can imagine, there are a lot of stars.  From what I remember, over 400K US dead.

Looks like Ryan Hoag is going to be on the new season of ABC's Bachelor Pad.  Now, I have no clue what this show is, but can't Hoag just gracefully fade into oblivion???

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I was referring to regular season games. The playoffs are out of UMU's hands considering it's a NCAA sponsored event.
