Retired Old Rat

Given the temporary refs in the NFL, who will be officiating D3 games this weekend?

Waldvogel, Shmaldvogel.  In a night game played in the Tokyo Dome, former Johnnie linebacker John Stanton, now playing TE/WR, caught 7 passes for 81 yards and two touchdowns in IBM BigBlue's season opener (a close loss to Fujitsu, 24-20).  http://www.bigblue-football.com/gameamefoot_detail/id=96

Too bad Gags never turned him loose on the opposition.  ;D

If I could read Japanes, I'd tell you more.   For comparison, though, the Japanese teams typically beat the European teams when they play - bring on the Unicorns!  8-)

Google's Translation:
"20-24 in the opening round defeat by a narrow margin to Fujitsu

Although perfect 14-3 lead with ー offense without failure path 1Q, no additional points extending from the mistakes that do not clog the opening round and then 20 to 24, was defeat by a narrow margin to Fujitsu. Thank you much for your encouragement, thank you. "

I've learned that the software translations are no better than trying to read the kanji.

Who will be handling the "payoff"?

So I wrote this sometime this past December.  It isn't exactly profound however it did help me come to grips with the struggles of the Johnnies during the 2011 season.

A few of my questions have been answered (Connor Bruns at QB) only to be replaced with new ones....such as "Who the hell is he going to throw the ball to?"  My prediction for SJU is that their offense will be one dimensional.  Good teams like UWEC and UST will stack the line and force Bruns to beat them with inexperienced receivers.  On defense the SJU will be improved but will not be able to match the quickness of their opponents.  Another preseason of injuries (How does no-contact team have so many injuries?).  I see at least another 3 or 4 loss season, including possibly back to back Homecoming losses in Collegeville.    I hope I'm proven wrong....please, please prove me wrong!

Someone should use their pull to see about getting an appearance by the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile on Saturday. It's in town.

Did anyone watch the gophers last night?  I don't have that CBS sports channel, and sure wasn't going to stay up that late listening on the radio.  I'm wondering if UNLV was maybe a little better than advertised, or if gopher fans should be discouraged that it took three overtimes to win.  The Strib article made it sound like the gophers did not look very sharp...

I stayed up hoping to see Andre McDonald make a few catches...he had one.  He should have had a TD but the problem was he was too wide open down field and Gray threw the ball over his head.  Gray would be fine if all of his receivers were about 6'6" tall.  He made some pretty decent passes but missed a number of wide open receivers.  Ironically on the first play of the 2nd OT he connected on a wheel route for a TD.
The Gophs were probably a play or three away from a 2 TD win.  They made it a lot tougher on themselves than they needed to.  First road game, in the Vegas heat, w/ a 10 pm (central) start time, only 12 seniors on the Gophs, versus a team w/ a coach in year 3....a win is a win I guess.

Season opener is just over 24 hours away. I'm unable to make the trip to Collegeville but I will be following the game remotely. Regardless of the outcome tomorrow there will be plenty of questions leading into the UWEC and UST games. Having said that (read that in your best sports talk radio voice), I would be more optimistic if the Johnnies put 4 or 5 scores on the board in the 1st quarter with the defense forcing multiple 3 & outs.

I was at the opener last year and even in a 34-0 win there were many reasons to be concerned for the season ahead. Nwstrn marched down the field on their first possession, only to turn it over on downs. SJU went 3 & out on their first possession before scoring a TD the next time they touched the ball. The offense however stalled out near the goal line and needed an option pass from a RB to get the TD. A trick play on the second possession of the game souldn't be required to score from 2 yards out against Nwstrn.

In a twisted way the Johnnies opener is a lot like the Gophers game from last night. A win is not in question, though the Gophers did their part to try and walk out with a loss. Optimism can be gained though if the Johnnies dominate from the opening kick and roll up a big early lead before clearing the bench. With some of the youth this team has though I wouldn't mind letting the starters getting extended minutes even when the game is completely out of reach.

Hopefully Northwestern can keep it close tomorrow. I expect nothing less than complete shock and horror from the johnnie faithful here if it's within 3 scores at the half.  I won't be able to attend tomorrow; planning on going to tommie/johnnie though.

The gophers looked pretty good to me last night.  Gray was inaccurate and stoudemire dropped the punt, but the defense looks fast and the running backs look physical.
