It's a sad state of affairs when the action of today's board is recounting the great players who once took the field for SJU & the classic SJU/Bethel matchups from the late 90's-2005  :-\
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Poor guy was probably mesmerized by Ryan Hoag.

It's like the old Packers joke, which stopped working in 1996. (and of course works with any team with past success):

How many Johnnies fans does it take to screw in a light bulb?

11 -- 1 to change the bulb and 10 to talk about how great they used to be at it.

I don't think Gunderson was over hyped at all.  When he was healthy, he was a beast.  He blew out his knee two years in a row.  His last year he elected NOT to have surgery until after the season.  He was a shadow of his former self.

Ha!!

Well who could blame him, I mean, talk about an 'extraordinary' talent  ;) Really, Hoag has shown an extraordinary ability to turn a psuedo-professinoal career into 7.5 chances at his 15 minutes of fame. Now that he's exhausted the Bachelorette and Bachelor Pad franchise is he shooting for a spot on Big Brother or the Real World  ;D

That may be the case. But in those last two seasons, that shadow of his former self got some serious national accolades that seemed based more on what he'd done in a healthy season with great talent around him. Water under the bridge, moving along...

He can always fall back on the fact that he is the pre-eminent running joke on this forum.  So he's got that going for him...which is nice.

I had some overlap with him, and when I found out he had been drafted had to go back and look at film to remember who he is.  My reaction was, "Really?  THAT GUY?!"  Guess I was too distracted by the comedy of Joe Thorvig being convinced that Ben Matthews was on his team. ;D  He was GAC's leading receiver with 5 catches that day, unless I'm mistaken.

I'm with Duffman.

Talent is a non-sustainable competitive advantage. It tends to wash out and equalize in football and everything else. The top teams, be they in sports or anything, are the teams where everyone knows what they have to do and they do it consistently.

Another quote, "Every year we lose totally irreplaceable guys."

Now I'm not saying the man is perfect and above criticism - heck, I only said hello in passing about two times and never even really met him - but he knows a thing or two. And he would probably be the first to say he learns something new every year. He would most likely defend each of his players against the sort of personal criticism we've seen around here the last few days.

But it would be interesting to hear what he thinks has let the Johnnies go off the boil the last couple years. Do you think he discusses it?  I wonder if he trying to improve and help his players succeed or if he's sitting back, smoking stogies, and living on daydreams of yesteryear.

That business model won't stand up for long.
