There seem to be 3 criteria for a new coach at SJU:
1. Beat St. Thomas
2. Win MIAC titles consistently
3. Go deep into the NCAA play-offs,winning titles at least once every 7-10 years.

If those are the priorities, then you conduct a national search and strongly encourage all qualified, SJU connected candidates to apply. Ideally, after that national search your #1 candidate has program ties and connections. But your priority, if those goals are accurate, would seem to necessitate hiring the best coach available, whether he has ties or not.

The last SJU football coach hired had no previous ties to the program.

I don't think there was much of a reason to try to maintain the tradition of the program at that point.

As I mentioned originally there are two camps- one that wants to hire someone with SJU ties and the other that says national search, hire the best candidate, pay him well and let him bring in his own staff- but hold him accountable for results.

However this shakes out there will be unhappy people based on the decision. If the new coach doesn't produce big in a short period of time there will be grumblings among those who did not get their wish in the hiring process.

Wisconsin Whitewater & Mount Union have outpaced the rest of the nation with their results on a national stage and the search committee would be negligent if they didn't look at coordinators from those two programs and give them serious consideration.

No matter who it is, I don't think we should hold them to winning a title every 7 to 10 years. By that criteria, Gagliardi was something of a raging failure from 1977-2012. One title. Should have made the wise step and hired Augustana's (Ill.) defensive coordinator in 1986.

I don't have a horse in this horserace, whoever follows John (whenever that is) I hope they put their own stamp on the program. I just hope that the program doesn't fall off the table like some programs have when a legendary coach leaves- Pacific Lutheran is one that comes to mind and as you mentioned the Augustana Ill. program has been off the radar since 1986. BTW, who was their defensive coordinator in 1986?

105, don't know which was D coordinator, but the coaches from 86 Augie team were:

HEAD COACH: Bob Reade
ASSISTANT COACHES: John Farwell, Dennis Riccio, Tom Schmulbach,
Vic Boblett, Cecil Youngblood, Don Davis, Paul Unruh

That's from the Augie website.  Couple of those names sound familiar to me from somewhere - Riccio, Boblett, Unruh.

Nice bounce back by Bethel today.

Game wasn't as close as the score indicates. At 41 - 7 Bethel took their foot off the gas and then downed the ball on their final drive deep into GAC territory.

LOVED seeing the offense air it out today. I know historically we've been a ground and pound team, but this Offense has its best weapons in the passing game. Hallstrom and Hillbrands at WR and Phenow, Marquardt and Walbilig coming out of the backfield. The balance was great to see and the passing game opened things up for our running game. This sure seems like our identity going forward.

The play calling today was a great mix as well. We were as unpredictable as I can remember in recent memory. Good adjustments by the coaching staff. I think the key is carrying this mentality into big games and not reverting to an overly conservative mindset. This team won't grind out wins like past ones, but it also has a much more potent passing game when we use it properly and aren't sitting in 3rd and forever because procedural penalties and such.

Great games for Peterson 27-29 for 315, 3 TD's and Hallstrom with 10 catches for over 100 yds.

Different names are familiar to me: Schmulbach went on to become the Augustana head coach and Youngblood went on to become the head men's basketball coach at Beloit.

SUMMIT!!!!!

TOTALLY off topic....but any of you Johnnies or Bennie...is there a statue to Kateri Tekakwitha on the SJU campu, kinda hear the lowest levels of the Prep School?   if so, she was cannonized today
After the game, the king and pawn go into the same box.

Sloppy win for the Tommies, but they had 11 starters out of the game so that's to be expected.  Hopefully they'll clean that up before Augsburg next week.  With that many starters out it can really disrupt your rhythm.  However, one thing I'm excited about is their youth.  They had more than 15 freshmen or sophomores either start or play significant minutes.  Although they made mistakes, it's still a great learning experience for them.  The next few years should be fun to watch.

I think there's something recognizing her on one of the paths out to chapel on the lake.

Were all 11 out due to injury? That's a ton of starters out.  If that's the case, I would guess that some of them could have played had it been a big game for the tommies. This would have been the weak to rest some guys that had minor injuries with some big games remaining in the tommies schedule.
