So will they be playing hip hop and rap music at the Bethel stadium this Saturday when the Johnnies come to town like they did last Saturday at Hamline and a few weeks back at Auggie Tech? We will be having a tailgate party outside the stadium this Saturday so join us if you like.

Well, you certainly won't get Hell's Bells played through the loudspeakers while the home team is on D like Olaf did this last week. It's one thing to pump in noise. It's another to leave the music cranking while the opposing team is at the line of scrimmage. On a few occasions, RoyalBU reported the music continued through the ball being snapped. Stay classy Olaf  :P And for the record, I don't think that had anything to do with Bethel losing. We get the blame for that. Just a general trend in keeping with the atmosphere you typically get from the Olaf fans and players. I'd like to think MIAC teams and fans are better than that. At the very least, the school representatives running the sound should be.
Without looking, I thought there was some sort of rule against that. Maybe it is a conference rule. Still bush in my opinion!

We played Bethel in the Metrodome back in 2000 I believe. The Metrodome staff let the Bethel students run the music for the game and we got to hear "Who Let the Dogs Out" during every stop in play for 3 hours. Someone should have said, "Enough's enough guys, un-ass the PA system and sit back down with the other students."

In the late 90's when SJU played BU in basketball in Arden Hills they played Gary Glitter to death during timeouts...and yes the students danced around in the bleachers to it.  It was freakin' annoying

Wow. What do you mean by "a general trend in keeping with the atmosphere you typically get from Olaf fans and players"? I know losing two years in a row to Olaf must be tough to swallow, especially after your team got physically dominated last Saturday on both sides of the ball, but give me a break.

Fans are smoking grass in the stands during the home games at SJU?  Now THAT'S some liberal Catholics for ya right there!   ;)

Ha! As a Bethel player in 2000, we had to listen to that song played at every game! Brutally annoying...I still have nightmares

My personal opinion is that a larger percentage of Olaf's players and fans tend to be punks. I think it really started with the Meidt era (and he affected Bethel when he was here as well). But there was some stupid stuff Olaf guys did on the field and were still doing on Saturday. They had a cornerback in 2006 who was all conference. Before the game he stood in the doorway while Bethel went out to walk up to the field and taunted the team and players for a solid 15 minutes. He was pretty indicative of the way the rest of the team generally acted that Saturday. Knowing this, one of our OL goaded that CB into a 15 yd personal foul. I saw similar stuff on the webcast, and the PA practice seems in keeping with this.

At a game in 2005 the an entire section of the Olaf fanbase harassed every Bethel fan who walked along the bleachers to get to their seats. And by harassed, I mean they got in their faces, tried to block them from passing and said insulting and derogatory stuff. Let's just say when they did it to my wife, I made a point of going down and walking through to see if they'd do the same to me. Strangely, the 170 pound ring leader and his buddies backed down pretty quickly  ;) Bottom line, if you have seating on only one side, you'd better make sure your fans have the class to give the opposing fans their space. They absolutely did not that day.

And I don't argue with the fact you beat us soundly on Saturday. And as I said in the original post, I don't think it affected the outcome. But the behavior is far from classy or good sportsmanship. Every team and fan base has its tools, Bethel included, but what I generally enjoy about these boards and the MIAC/D3 in general is that we usually do a good job of self-policing in these matters.

Hazzben,

Has that every been a problem at St. Thomas?

I'm honestly just wondering what its like to be an opposing team fan there.  Thanks, I'll hang up and listen from home.

I'll chime in on that one...at UST for the playoff game in 2010 all of the UST fans that I encountered in the main seating section were very friendly and just seemed excited to watch what was likely to be a close game.  I was on the edge of the BU seating section closest to the UST fan base and had no complaints at all about that group.

However, I spent a quarter or so standing on the opposite side talking to some friends while we stood underneath the big money seats on the other side and things weren't quite the same there.  Lots of nasty things being said to players / support staff by the folks who were afforded such close access to the visiting team.  I guess they felt like they had purshased the right to be a$$holes along with their donations that gave access to those seats.

Given that the vast majority were sitting on the main side, this would again seem to be the exception, rather than the rule.

That was my experience.

Sitting on the UST west sideline seats during the regular season, no problem. During the playoff game, standing below the big money seats (next to oAs I should add) there was a decent amount of derogatory stuff hurled at the Bethel bench and support staff in the second half. I think on the whole though, it seemed like just a rowdy, pumped crowd on both sides that knew they were watching two very good games.

And no music pumped in during the play on the field.  :)
