I kinda disagree with that-any competent coach can coach elite players-Jordan, Kobe. But what does that coach do with average players? I saw SJU out schemed on D this year- not just out played.
We need new blood at SJU now-something to get recruits interested. Fasching is not getting anyone interested in playing at SJU.

Patrick Reusse Tweeted that the next head coach at SJU will be either one of two- A.) Mike Grant or B.) Gary Fasching I'd say we will know before Christmas if Patrick is right or not.......
I'm sure the email for Athletic Director Tom Stock is already filling up with quality candidates interested in the position.

I'm telling you, it's gonna be Timmy Brewster.   ;D

The press release said national search.  Look for a MUC(k), UWW or MHB coach.  Lightening doesn't strike twice, so I reckon they are open to anything.  The "No's" may be no more, unfortunately.  But they belonged to Gagliardi.  Someone else will have their own thing.

I agree Oz- the search committee would be negligent if they don't seriously look nationwide. This is no time for nepotism. That being said,if the best candidate is a Johnnie then hire him,but hire him as the best candidate not simply the best candidate who attended and played at SJU.
I have a feeling that the donations goals for the athletic facilities expansion will exceed all expectations with the excitement surrounding this new chapter in SJU Football.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

I absolutely agree, and I whole-heartedly hope that they do conduct a thorough, nationwide search.  John had his program; it'd be foolish to try to keep that in place.  SJU needs to find a top-notch coach that can bring them back into title contention.

It's all still sinking in.  It almost feels as if John died, not retired.  It's going to be surreal next September with someone else prowling the sidelines!  :-\

"John was tremendously successful -- unparalleled success from a football standpoint," Elliott said. "But what isn't written about is how many lives he's touched. Think about what not cutting guys means: 60 years with 190 guys on every team. That's thousands of people that have had a positive impact by being around John."

I thought about it and a new team every 4 years (60 / 4 = 15), 15 x 190 = 2,850.

I would hope that former Hamline head coach (and tOSU running back coach) and current Carleton assistant Dick Tressel gets a good look at the head job.  He is a very good recruiter (that was his main job at Ohio State), knows how to be a head coach (I don't think he ever had a losing season at Hamline), knows the MIAC well, and would not overstay a welcome in Collegeville.  He'd be fresh but established blood for a transitional phase-- and a national name without the taint.

If his name isn't mentioned it would be a shame-- he should at least receive consideration.

I was a Freshman at SJU the year John started. Two of his first stars - Jim Lehman & Chuck Froehle - are long gone. Frank Berres (the original Rat) was also in my class. John & I also share November 1. Whew ................................ great run so far and no  :'(

Does anyone know the history how the number 1 was added to the "U" in SJU?

I suspect it is tied to John, but have never heard the story behind it.

I thought about it and a new team every 4 years (60 / 4 = 15), 15 x 190 = 2,850.

But no senior class ever had 45-50 guys on it. It's way more than 15 unique sets of kids.

Now, not every team had 190 on it either, but I suspect that way more than 3,000 kids were on John Gagliardi's Johnnies teams.

That's right, thanks Pat - would be an interesting number to find out none the less.
