I'm not trying to pick a fight here or anything, just sticking up for my beloved alma mater - whom I truly believe had a good chance at winning next Sat.  I may be out of my mind and have no idea about teams beyond the ones I've seen Bart play in the past few years, but if Bart ever had a chance at going to the national semis, this (and perhaps next year) is the best opportunity I've ever seen them have.

Not much chatter, but maybe that's the composition of this board.  One guy came over to the east side.  Either way, I'll be rooting for the winner the following week.

I don't think anyone that posts regularly on here is foolish enough to think UST or its fans assume we can sleepwalk through the the #7 ranked team in the nation in the National Quarterfinals. This isn't some completely anonymous SEC flamewar board where people have no concept of reason or objective analysis and assume their team will win because "DERRRR, YOUR TEAM SUCKS." Unless those people are from SJU of course  ;D.

UST is banged up, playing a ton of freshmen and sophomores, has had tough games against the likes of UW-Eau Claire and Gustavus Adolphus, and was given a real run by Elmhurst last week. They're not perfect, but, in the pre-Whitewater/Mt. Union era, I'm sure anyone from SJU or Linfield could tell you that being from a strong region certainly helps, but you also need a little magic every now and then.

UST will be ready to play because their schedule dictates that they be ready to play every week, ask anyone from STO, SJU, Bethel, Concordia or the WIAC that. And I can also assure you that Glenn Caruso does not sleep well in the months of November or December. No matter who is coming to St. Paul.

PK - I think that everyone should know that one can't generalize from a specific, or, come to a specific conclusion because of a generalization.

Just because one Conference/Region may, overall be weaker, it does not mean that a specific team from the weaker region wouldn't beat a specific team from another region - or vice versa. Since there just isn't that much inter-region play, it's hard to even decide which region is stronger overall. We will fall back on "history" going back as far as we think is relevant. It just so happens that the Stagg Bowl participants (even forgetting the last 7 years) have been from certain regions. And, certain regions have not gotten as far in the playoffs with some regularity. It's all we got to go by. Don't take it personally. ;)

pumkinattack -- I think it's also fair to say that on the podcast we gave Hobart a good chance in this game, right?

PA;

I think the East is hopeless and Hobart is the king of the Hopeless Hit Parade.  If nothing else, the East has the reputation of being DIII's weak sauce. Take pride in your reputation; it's been well earned. At least your football teams can race to the bottom with distinction.

There, does that satisfy your need?

Nice, thanks.  All good responses and yes, the D3 podcast was very fair.  Probably looking more for discussion than anything else.  Looks like more SJU fans/alums over here than UST though?

And I totally agree that being battle tested all year is a benefit (if you can make it through).  My biggest complaint over in the LL this year was that the league was weak overall (for the 4th year running IMO).  Frank Rossi vehemently diagrees, but other than Hobart, the only decent OOC wins were season bookend wins over an ok Alfred U team.

And the SEC joke made me laugh.  I moved to Atlanta from NYC a few years ago with my wife (who's family are big donors to GA Tech) and it's insane down here.  Education really doesn't matter.  And UGA fans are crazy obnoxious for a school that hasn't won a championship since the early 80's.

The SJU guys usually discuss Hamm's beer, ice fishing and speculate who will replace the legend on the sidelines next year. Come back when all this play-off nonsense is out of the way to see when the real discussion begins  ;)

It was nice to be able to discuss SJU's deep play-off runs, too, but the off-topic discussions are what keep me coming back.  ;)

Wow!  The attendee list for the SJU Football Coach Open Forum & Luncheon is growing quite large already!

Sweet, I've registered. I have some thoughts on some great potential new coaches: Bobby Petrino, Gene Chizik, Tim Brewster, Mike McQuery, David Bennett, Bill O'Boyle, just to name a few.

The definition of insanity: named on Auburn's short list to replace Gene Chizik is Bobby Petrino. I guess being a big time football coach is like being a politician, just get hired the first time and it doesn't really matter how outrageous your behavior is,you'll get another job in short order.

So it appears that Chizik may have a more difficult time finding another job, based on that criteria,it appears he's a decent guy who just happened to go 0-8 in the SEC this year and got thumped by Alabama 49-0 in The Iron Bowl  :-\

Well since it feels like it should be obligatory for me to respond to this. Most of the fans/students I know are actually ultra critical of the program and call for Richt's job every other week, so I don't believe that those who are really here and around the campus are really trumping up things. It's more like the fans who never went to the school (like many D1 schools). Notre Dame's fans are also obnoxious for not having won in 20 years as well.

The best thing regarding UST's victory last week:  The return of dlip!

(I still pronounce dlip in my head as one syllable as I read.  Kind of like my own private water boarding nightmare.)

Coach Gagliardi made it to the second round in the fan poll-bracket that tries to determine the best college football coach of all time.  This round he is up against George Welch of Navy/Virginia [seriously?].  The voting goes on until this Friday and you can re-vote every ten minutes.  [Or more often if you router cycles addresses, like mine does  8-)]

I've already voted 60+ times and he is only breaking even ... I need some help!
