I voted for Gags and Kehres and Stagg and ... I forget which other guy had D-III ties. And Roy Kidd too.

LK, Roy, Amos Alonzo are in pretty good shape so far this round.

Fielding Yost is in trouble ... I may not be able to save him.

And my apologies, Woody ... Bo was a neighbor in Barberton, OH.

You're a good man, Keith!
Never underestimate the stimulation of eccentricity.

TMQ Man of the Year: Since Andy Ashkar was not what he seemed, this distinction goes to John Gagliardi of St. John's of Minnesota, who retired last week with 489 wins, most ever by a college coach.

Gagliardi hasn't actively run the team in two seasons, so his record may be slightly padded. But the example he set was a fine one, including high graduation rates and limited contact in practice, to reduce injuries. Gagliardi used "positive coaching http://positivecoach.org," challenging players to improve rather than screaming at them when they err. And Gagliardi's habit of having his players lie on their backs, look up at the sky and contemplate the glory of life wasn't just a quirk -- it was leadership.

Ugh, I thought that joker had moved on to non-sports pursuits.

I wish I could be happy for Gagliardi here, but this is the same guy who says stuff like Mount Union schedules six home games to gain an unfair advantage without checking to see if they had six away games the year before. As if it even matters where Mount Union plays against 95% of D-III.

I agree that John was an outside the box thinker who should be honored probably for that more than his football wins. It's fine to know nothing about D-III football. It bugs me that Easterbrook knows nothing about it and makes value judgments.

Those of you who love John should be proud of him for the honors he gets that actually mean something.

What I learn from John is you don't show anything until the playoffs.

Lighten up. A few years ago he made a comment along the lines UST "blowing it again" at a booster luncheon or something. I can't remember the exact context, but given the circumstances of the previous two years, it kind of made me laugh. To consider something John says as "bulletin board material" is to not really get his sense of humor. He's pretty self-depricating and has some pretty dry wit and subtle humor.

Coach Gagliardi made it to the second round in the fan poll-bracket that tries to determine the best college football coach of all time.  This round he is up against George Welch of Navy/Virginia [seriously?].  The voting goes on until this Friday and you can re-vote every ten minutes.  [Or more often if you router cycles addresses, like mine does  8-)]

I've already voted 60+ times and he is only breaking even ... I need some help!

Yes, this is Keith digging at Easterbrook, not John Gagliardi.

Probably looking more for discussion than anything else.  Looks like more SJU fans/alums over here than UST though?

The SJU guys usually discuss Hamm's beer, ice fishing and speculate who will replace the legend on the sidelines next year. Come back when all this play-off nonsense is out of the way to see when the real discussion begins  ;)

You had me at beer and lost me at ice fishing.

And UGA fans are crazy obnoxious for a school that hasn't won a championship since the early 80's.

Well since it feels like it should be obligatory for me to respond to this. Most of the fans/students I know are actually ultra critical of the program and call for Richt's job every other week, so I don't believe that those who are really here and around the campus are really trumping up things. It's more like the fans who never went to the school (like many D1 schools). Notre Dame's fans are also obnoxious for not having won in 20 years as well.

Spend some time in Atlanta.  Grads of UGA, Mercer, Georgia State, Kennesaw State and GED's all talking up UGA as if they created football, nevermind the running GA Tech joke is that they need to play at the beginning of the season since UGA typically has 10-15 guys suspended and/or in jail (one stud RB had his license taken away and then got caught driving in a parking deck on campus!).  The AJC had this Bring on Alabama cover.  We'll see, but I suspect that soft schedule (last four games vs. Ol Miss, Auburn, Georgia Southern and GA Tech and I know Tech very, very well - they are terrible) will end with a 3td loss.  Take away the home win vs. FL by 8 and the schedule looks like something a Big East champ might throw up on any given season in the last ten or so.

Wow!  The attendee list for the SJU Football Coach Open Forum & Luncheon is growing quite large already!

Wish I could go. But SJUsection105 knows the drill...got the spears and gear in the truck and a fresh 30 pack of Hamm's. Leaving for God's Country in 15 minutes to spear northerns until Monday. Will need to work on Tuesday.

At the end of the day, I don't really care what others think about a region or team in general...

But, I would like to make a couple of points for the many that believe this game will be a cakewalk in the theory that all East teams suck all the time.  I actually was very defensive at the end of last year and the first 3-4 weeks this year about Hobart's preceived relative positioning - largely vis-a-vis St John Fisher.  Most people treat SJF as the best team in the East and many apologists made lots of excuses for why they lost (with their starting QB @ home) vs. Hobart 56-20 (actually 1pt more than UST won by on their home field).  The reality is that SJF was lucky to get into the field last year at 8-2 with two blowout losses (also lost by 20 to Salisbury) and then got a very nice path to the quarters (JHU - the Centennial IMO is not as strong as Hobart's very average league, then a clearly overrated DelVal - another team that had gotten some benefit of being pretty good the prior few years).  Hobart had a bizarro loss by one pt at home to RPI (w a 2x League OPOY some claim has had NFL interest which I'm personally skeptical of) with zero kicking game and a weird 8 game schedule (bc Widener dropped us over the summer), but otherwise beat everyone by 17+ including the 5td win over SJF and yet ends up going to top 4 Wesley in the first round and comes up just short losing by 7 with multiple starters out.  Somehow SJF ends up 8th in the D3 poll and Hobart is unranked.  Considering we lost to a final four team by 7 at their place and won head to head over SJF by a lot, I'd argue that Hobart was actually a better team last year than SJF.  I think Hobart is better this year, not graduating all that much.

Just some food for thought and perspective from admittedly a big Hobart fan about the East and perception.  The team you blew out got blown out twice that season earlier.

Can you guys tell how much PA loves Fisher?  My favorite part is how he consistently negates how Fisher beat two teams with a combined record of 21-0 heading into their game against us.  Last year's game against Hobart was a turning point in the season for the team.  It was a perfect storm of a fluke that day.  If you are inferring Hobart would have done that again had they met in the playoffs I'd say you are crazy.  The loss to Saint Thomas was legitimate even though our QB position was in a state of flux having been hurt in the Del Val game and the defense was banged up.  Saint Thomas last year had a WR that we did not have the talent to defend - he did better against Fisher than the 3 times we faced Pierre Garcon.  Luckily for Hobart he is gone.  In my opinion having seen both teams play if Hobart would have played Saint Thomas last year they would have gotten rolled as well that day.  They played a pretty sound game.  It wasn't Fisher's best day but I think even if Fisher would have turned in their best performance of the season that day they still would have come up short.

As for this year - It seems Hobart is fielding the same type of team talent wise while St. Thomas does not look to be as strong as they were last year.  This is why I think this game will be close.  But please continue to let pumkinattack tell you how horrendous Fisher is and how Hobart is leagues better.  Ignore how we beat them by 3 touchdowns at their home field the year before in that home-and-home series because that is the past and teams aren't allowed to get better after a lame duck performance...unless you are Hobart of course.  The best team the East has ever seen!!!!

ok, good, so now I dont have to 'say' it.... ;)
