Coach Gagliardi made it to the second round in the fan poll-bracket that tries to determine the best college football coach of all time.  This round he is up against George Welch of Navy/Virginia [seriously?].  The voting goes on until this Friday and you can re-vote every ten minutes.  [Or more often if you router cycles addresses, like mine does  8-)]

I've already voted 60+ times and he is only breaking even ... I need some help!

Indeed, George -- two conference title in close to 20 years -- Welch? Give me a break. Time to vote early, often.

Well, it's already a joke.  George Welch actually won over Frank Leahy in the first round - and numerous other head scratchers (Bear Bryant, Woody Hayes and Ara Parseghian also bounced in round 1).

Some great responses, and maybe it's my problem (or again reading the NWC board too much where they're expecting you to be there next week no matter what).  My only counter would be to suggest that I often see the result of a MUC or other quarterfinal game as evidence of the entire region.  If that's the case, then a win against a #1 seed (#2 in region, but considered a top 4, maybe top 5 team in the country) on their field ought to negate that argument, at least for this year.

I like Booby and he clearly has a problem with what I'm saying, but I presented evidence to consider, that's all.  And the 20pt loss to Sals was on 11/5, the second to last regular season game, to a team that wasn't in the top 5 or 6, so I fail to see how improved the team got a week later before heading into the playoffs.  I can't go back through 3,000 pages, but somewhere shortly after the seedings came out there was a lot of excuse making and stories that didn't fit the reality (not by all SJF fans, but many).

Perhaps UST will roll Hobart and send us to the airport like a bunch of red headed step children.  All I'm saying is that I wouldn't take anything from the game with SJF last year to mean anything about the entire region.  I haven't seen a ton of posts about this, but you see the "oh MUC has this cakewalk to the quarters" posts, the Linfield guys talking about their game with UST next week, the D3 podcast about how Hobart is representing the strength of the entire region, etc., etc. and I just felt compelled to point out the vast differences between your eastern opponent last year and your opponent from East of the Miss this year.

Hobart is an excellent team right now and I believe they have a much better chance of beating UST Sat than Fisher did last year.  But why/how does a relative comparison of SJF v. Hobart from last year/this year/or via National rankings resolve anything for you or Hobart this Sat?  Its as if you feel justified in defending the "East is weak" attitude you are perceiving by ****ting on perhaps the best the East has had to offer in the past 10 years???  Deal with (it) the perception, like we have to every other year.  Be proud of Bart, you should be, they are solid and you called this way back in early Sept (I remember the post  ;) ) and stop worrying about Fisher already.

Here's the TMQ mention:

"TMQ Man of the Year: Since Andy Ashkar was not what he seemed, this distinction goes to John Gagliardi of St. John's of Minnesota, who retired last week with 489 wins, most ever by a college coach.

Gagliardi hasn't actively run the team in two seasons,

When I read that bolded part (emphasis mine), I was curious. What exactly does it mean that he hasn't "actively" run the team?

It means a bunch of BS from someone who has no clue.

Yeah that was a really dumb line and as clueless as some of the Mount shots Keith mentioned.

Maybe it means John used the passive voice: "Guys, that game was won by us with some good defense." Should have been more active: "Guys, we won that game with good defense."

It means its a ridiculous column/podcast making assumptions about someone and someplace the writer has never been for no reason whatsoever.  He does it every week.

Had a few brews at the Mitre Tavern last night after work. It was a sticky, humid 102 degrees yesterday at 5:30 and a few pints washed down with impressive ease. The Mitre is a great pub tucked away in an lane way full of old buildings. The tavern itself is in Victoria's oldest standing residence. Lots of character.  And they even walk around handing out free pizza on a Thursday night. Fridays are free snags (sausages).

Anyway, if any of you bums make it down here make sure to set aside an evening for a good old fashioned pub crawl.

Dang.  Speaking of hot and sticky, I typed that last post on the train into the city.  As I walked to the office from the station I thought, "It sure is hot."  And it is. It's already 78 degrees at 7:45am and very humid.  The low last night was 76.  Man, we're in for a scorcher today.  I might have to swing by the pub again on the way home...

Out to 35.  Must have been that halftime adjustment which is getting Gags ahead.

Should be doing my early morning email routine, but instead I'm here and thinking of Johnnies.  Anyway, Frank Rajkowski just posted an interesting tweet:

An update: As of this afternoon, St. John's AD Tom Stock said the school has received 12 completed applications for FB job and 50 inquiries

(I'm still stuck on the requirement for computer skills.  It's slowing me down.)

EDIT: As an afterthought, and maybe Pat or one of the d3football guys can answer this, I wonder how many applications are typical for a DIII position.  Do these tend to be an "every man and his dog" type exercise?  I wonder if we get more or less applications seeing the shoes that are being filled.  Mike Grant is all over the press trying to lap the field before the choice is made (maybe a bit uncharitable, but I'm on a roll) so anyone applying must be comparing their resume to his.  And his is impressive.  I wonder how that and the legacy affect the number and quality of applications the selection committee is seeing.

I posted the link.story on the John Gagliardi facebook page.  Since then he's been pulling away. ;D
