Did anyone get a chance to watch Gary Fasching's SJU forum today?  He's not the charming public speaker that Mike Grant is, so I was wondering what your thoughts of the forum were.

I viewed parts of it and to be honest he handled it pretty well.  I was impressed and pleased with the way he presented himself.

Seemed like he had pretty good command of the room. Started off with a joke about how after he saw how many people were at Grant's, he was worried no one would show up today.

Lot of recruiting talk.

I had the feeling that he has a plan and there is a lot he wanted to do the last few years but couldn't because he wasn't the boss.

Rewatched the Stagg last night.

Mount Union is good; St. Thomas is young.

If this group of St. Thomas freshman does not make it to another Stagg Bowl, I will be shocked.

Ok, the coach announcement pool.

First, my apologies for making a pool with so few dates to choose from.  I was thinking that it may not get announced until after Xmas, but no one else has thought that.  I should have added the hour of the announcement.  Anyways...

We have had seven submissions and four people are in the pool with the first picks:

sjusection105                  Dec 21
DuffMan                         Dec20
hazzbeen                       Dec 22
jknezeck                        Dec 25*

*jk will get the special sarcasm award if he wins.  I'll toss in some face paint as well.

I'm just going on record as saying if I win, something is really weird at that school. And what I know of SJU, besides the name Gagliardi and a very few associated football facts, can fit in a really small thimble!

Made it to the Grant forum yesterday, couldn't make Gary's today, will be at Ramler's tomorrow.....

They have only had one interview each with the short lists, right?  Even if one candidate stood out I would think at least one more interview was in order.

The first detailed interview was probably about philosophy, approach, boundaries, responsibilities, etc.  The second interview may be about detailed plans for recruiting, hiring, budget priorities, etc.  I would expect these Christmas holidays to be a pretty intense period for the leading candidate out of the short lists.  And seeing as all three are talking to the media I don't think they have had feedback on who is front or not.  Maybe the committee will play cards very close to its chest and make all three do detailed planning and presentations.

I would expect an exec search process to be like this:

1. Broad search narrowed to short list
2. Interview 1: Confirm cultural, philosophical, and general agreement with the short listers
3. Short list narrowed to the one, maybe two, preferred candidate(s)
4. Interview 2: Detailed presentations from short-short listers on their plans
5. Considerations of plans by the committee and selection of preferred candiate
6. Interview 3: Confirmation of org commitment to plans and addressing questions or uncertainties
6a. Interview 4: Resolution of outstanding issues from interview 3, if required
7. Announcement

On that schedule, I think they are only through step 2.  Give the candidates two weeks to prep their plans and presentations and we look for step 4 in the week of Jan 7?  Step 6 in the week of Jan 21?  Announcement the week of Jan 28?

Anyways, I don't think this will be done before Christmas.

New rule on the pool.  If you pick a date and that date passes, you can pick a new one seven days after the date you picked.

So, if Duff's pick, December 20, doesn't come off, he can put a new pick into the pool on Dec 27.

Hopefully, this rule lets the contest continue productively and stops a wisea$$ from picking one day and the next at midnight every time their day roles by and ruining it for the rest of us.

I think you're giving them too much credit, Oz.  I think they will make a choice quickly.

No doubt in my mind that this is done and announced by end of day Friday, December 21st.

My understanding of the process is a full day of intense interviews and meetings for each of the canidates on their respective days.  Thursday, the 10 person committee meets and comes up with their recomendation given to Fr. Doug and Pres. Hemeseath on Friday.  My guess this is done by Monday next week.  I'm taking the 23rd if it's still available.
