I think you're giving them too much credit, Oz.  I think they will make a choice quickly.

Also if there are any JC players who may transfer to D-II or D-I schools, they have until Jan. 15 to sign National Letter of Intent. I understand there is no NLI for D-III,but to rule this out (JC transfers) a new coach will need to have some time. I know this would be out of the norm for SJU but the new rules of recruiting are that you have to think outside the box if you are going to make an impact. There have to be a handful of kids at The North Dakota State College of Science that could make grades at MIAC schools & NDSCS has been a feeder program for many D-II schools in the midwest for years/ I'm just sayin'
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Did anyone else that watched Grant's interview hear him say that he has had a number of kids already contact him and tell him that if he gets the job they want to transfer?  The way he talked it sounded like many of them are on D1 and D2 teams.  If this is true it would be a no brainer to hire him...Fasching has already been working on high school players.  Could it be a quick turnaround for the program if Grant can bring in some higher level players?

Just my take on this whole thing.....Im thinking since all 3 are SJU alums and there was no "wild card" outside canidate in the final 3, that this was pretty much decided before the interviews even started.  Mike Grant has been THE canidate to replace John for the past 10-15 yrs.  If they had any interest in going another direction, I think there would have been at least 1 outside canidate.  And you cant tell me there wasn't atleast 1 well qualified applicant from the outside, this isn't the Hamline job.  I also don't see Ramble taking a OC postion if/when Mike gets it.  I think he as higher asperations, as he should, and could possible carve his own path somewhere else and possibley in 10 yrs or so when Mike decides to retire, he may come back then.  I maybe completely off base on this, but it seems kind of "set up" and they are just going thru the motions to appease the public of having had a "search committe".  Not that I have a problem with this, as long in the end Mike is the new HC.  I believe he has a stronger relationship with John and will make the transition easier on John, the players, the alum, and the university as a whole.  Ok, Im done......

Here's my call:

Grant named head coach on 1/7
Ramler named offensive coordinator on 1/16
Fasching promoted to defensive coordinator on 1/21

A man's gotta dream, right?  ;)

Given that SJU tried to upstage the Stagg with their announcement of the final 4 candidates, isn't it only logical to announce the hiring the morning of 12/25? I mean, it's got to be that important, right?

;D

Would that be any sort of Violation of NCAA Recruiting rules?  Contact with a player currently under scholarship at another school?  Just wondering...

I wasn't accusing SJU of anything, just a question.  And yes Mount Union does, but not very often.  Although there have been a handfull of D3 players transferring in lately.  Garcon and Denton came from Norwich and Germany Woods (sat out this year) transferred in from Heidelberg.  I'm still scratching my head on that one as Hallet (former player for Kehres) is the HC at Heidelberg.  It's the first time in my memory that a OAC player transferred IN to Mount Union.  Usually it's players who come to Mount Union, decide they'd rather play more somewhere else than bide their time on the depth chart, and transfer out of Mount Union.  Jim Ballard was another "Lateral" transfer.  He came to MTU from Wilmington (who is D3 now, but I think they were NAIA at the time).

I won't say there haven't been ANY Scholarship players transfer in to Mount Union, but for the most part they build their program with their own recruits.  I can probably count on two hands the number of Scholarship players who have transferred to MTU and become impact players for the Raiders over the past 20 years.  The few that come to mind are Matt Campbell (one year at Pitt), Chris Kern (came from a D2 school in one of the Dakotas), Larry Kinnard (never went to OSU, but had a scholarship there and then had some transcript problems along with hid father being diagnosed with cancer so he came home to Alliance).  Probably more, those are the ones that come to mind.

Kern was at St. Cloud State in MN.  Interestingly, his SCSU teammate, Nick Bruns, started on the DL for us in 2000, and their teammate at SCSU, Jeff Hazuga, played at Stout (who we beat in the first round of the playoffs in 2000).  Lots of talent left SCSU around that time.  :o

Don't see how it would as he's not currently a college coach.  Also...if the player "initiates" the contact I don't think it can be a violation.  If  I recall Mike stated that players had contacted him.
