Futile attempts to discredit him from the peanut gallery on this or any other board will not change that. His record speaks for itself, plain and simple!
I never said anything about his ability to coach.  He obviously knows what he's doing.  I just don't care for some of his behaviors.

Eh, at least one of the Tommies is a bit sensitive about all this coach talk, and it not being all about U$T.  I bet it's even a slap in the face that Caruso isn't being considered for the SJU job!   ;D

So, is Frank staking out this this committee meeting this morning?  I'm anxiously awaiting the smoke coming out of that room.  Dusty didn't stay on campus to give us the scoop?

Not at all, Johnnie_esq. Couldn't be further from the truth. Actually enjoying all of the discontent in the Johnnie camp and have been for years. Just makes the Tommie rise that much sweeter.

And if you think for one second that Caruso wouldn't be considered for the vacancy had he even remotely shown interest, I'll call you nuts. Thank God he has absolutely no interest in the job!

In Kurt's Q&A with Frank, here's what he said about his departure:

Quote
"The year we had our great success (2008) was the only year we had a roster of over 80 players at the beginning of the season. My philosophy as a coach is very similar to John's. I like a large roster, and I think success in this league today really requires it.

"That tied into my departure. Nobody, in any profession, would stay somewhere that they couldn't have all the tools they needed to be successful."

I've actually emailed quite a bit with the brother of one of our most distinguished posters here, trying to analyze the Carleton stuff.

That 2008 season was pretty remarkable, although I'm not sure how many seniors there were, etc. Just a quick look: The leading rusher was a freshman. Second-leading rusher was an underclassman so I'm guessing was also Ramler recruit. THe great QB they had was a senior, though, as was the top receiver, I think. And I think the MIAC was down a bit. But still, 7-3 at Carleton and the three losses: Lost in OT to Gustavus, lost by 2 to Tommies; lost to Johnnies in final seconds. Very close to 10-0. At Carleton. They did win some close games as well that sort of balanced everything out. The next year they were 3-1 but then lost 31-28 to Augsburg and 28-21 to Gustavus and didn't win rest of the year.

And if we're going on track record...Caruso was 2-7 and 4-5 as a coach before the Tommies (he did have the coordinator experience obviously). And Caruso, rightly, has gotten credit for those Macalester teams, but...does he have those records with Mac if he's playing in the MIAC? Does he have as good of a record as Ramler did during his time at Carleton? No. (Carleton and Ramler actually played Macalester in Caruso's two years, winning 52-0 and 34-10). Ultimately I do think the Carleton record is a plus, even with the struggles at the end.

Good stuff, sfury.

Maybe its more a slap in SJU's face tbat Caruso had zero interest in their job opening, but then again I highly doubt Bo had any interest in the OSU job when Woody left.  Isnt it also a slap in Steve Johnson's face that SJu isnt considering him for the job? What about Terry Horan- another slap?  While the SJU gig is a plum job to many, it is not THE ultimate coaching job for all. Judging by the lack of a non-connected finalist, I'd say the "non-family" interest may not have been all that great.

DISAGREE!

As abysmal as Carleton has been/was, they weren't in danger of dropping the program completely when Ramler took over, they didn't drop out of the MIAC, and they never had roster numbers as low as 30 guys. Not saying Caruso could have gotten Carleton to 7 - 3, but I'm not ready to say Ramler could have gotten Mac to 4 - 5 either.

Irv Cross and the Macalester administration had zero interest in keeping the program around, if it weren't for football alums and Caruso I doubt there would even be a Mac program today. I had an opportunity to talk to Mac's former coach (before the Caruso era) at the Stagg Bowl and have a new-found appreciation of what those guys had to go through just to field a team.

I don't really think either of those men could have had sustained success at either institution without the full backing and committment of the administration. Which is why both left. I don't think it puts either man in a higher category than the other, Caruso was just more fortunate that the UST job came open with great timing.

My sarcasm indicator light must not have been working regarding my post: It wasn't intended to actually imply that Caruso, Johnson or anybody else would even be interested; rather, it was intended to poke fun at another U$T poster who was trying to defend Caruso's results-- when that wasn't even at issue.  My bad if it came across any other way.

For the record, I think it is very clear that SJU fans and program are actively engaged in dealing with Caruso-- and the SJU search process proves that.  While Caruso's methods are open to criticism (as have been Gagliardi's, as have been Steve Johnson's, for example), his results at U$T are fact-- considering only one other MIAC team has ever been to the Stagg Bowl (and only two have ever won National Titles in football), getting there alone is an accomplishment and deserving of a respect-- which he has received, from Johnnies and Cobbers and Royals and Oles alike.  But it still doesn't mean we have to like him, personally or professionally!

Enough about U$T.  Anyone know if the committee is still meeting?

Yes, that really hurt. I've found it hard to sleep nights, knowing that Coach C would not even deign to apply for the job. We may never recover...

(BTW, I wouldn't be surprised if C has a new interest that he's ready to hop on...developing)

I hate Lebron James too, but if he was on the T-Wolves I'd buy season tix.

And yes, I am comparing Glenn Caruso to Lebron James. It is a perfect, completely un-flawed analogy of which I have no doubt everyone will concur without so much as an eyeroll.

Bench, not sure what you're disagreeing with. Apparently a "December 20 is Defend Caruso Day" email was sent out by the head of the Tommie alumni association and all Tommies have responded, even when he's not being criticized. Not taking anything away from what Caruso did at Mac. I'm sure he did save the program. Where did I say he didn't? I did say Mac wouldn't have been 4-5 in the MIAC in 2007. I don't think that's libelous.

People were chatting about Ramler's record and whether that was a negative for him. I was simply saying it wasn't -- from a pure record standpoint -- if you looked a bit deeper. Just as, if no one was aware of Mac's history, they might see Caruso's career record before UST and think, "Geez, why'd we hire this guy? He's got a losing record?" When, if you did know Mac's history, you'd know he did a remarkable job there.

I'm not saying what Ramler did at Carleton was more impressive than Caruso at Mac, just that I don't think you can look at Ramler's record and think, "This guy has a losing record? Why would SJU hire him?" I do see my wording in the bolded part might have been confusing; didn't mean to make it sound like Caruso couldn't have gotten Carleton to 7-3 in 2008, just that in '06 and '07 Mac in the MIAC would have had the same struggles record-wise Carleton had in '10-'11.

Anyway: One other non-Caruso thing: Ramler was 2-4 against Bethel. SJU during those years? 1-5.

In the MIAC, no, I didn't see anyone going 7 - 3 with Mac at the time. Mac was a lot further behind Carleton, having lost 3 in a row to Carleton in major blowout fashion. Carleton was a lot further ahead of Mac at that time and on an upswing, albeit, because of Ramler, but they did have a good headstart.

But Caruso is a proven program builder, and I have every confidence that had he stayed at Mac, there would be serious talks about rejoining the MIAC and that they could get to 5 conference wins perenially, had he been guaranteed a budget to work with and adiminstrative support. That's not taking anything away from Jennison and what he's done there, I just think it's hard for anyone to maintain that level of enthusiasm when the powers-that-be make it known that football is very low on the list on how they want to package their school to outsiders.

Who was the President at Carleton when Ramler resigned?

Steve Poskanzer was in his first year as president.  He took over for Oden in the summer of 2010.
