QuoteSearch committee chair Joe Mucha cites taking more time to finish background checks as reason for no offer until after Xmas

If that is the truth, I would assume that the internal candidate is not their hire.  You don't have someone on staff for 17 years then wait another week to do a background check on him.

Seems like a smoke screen to me.  All 3 are well known to the selection committee.  Perhaps time to smooth some ruffled feathers?  Work a deal where all 3 are part of the staff?

Only knowing what I read, both here and elsewhere, about Glenn Caruso, I am beginning to wonder if there is another comparison we can make. Being a hockey guy, he might be somewhat like Mike Keenan. Wherever Keenan has gone, he has brought quick successful results. But his style seems to wear on people, and then, He wears out his welcome and is gone. Again, no one can argue with Keenan's win/loss success, but he is such an A*&hole, that after a short time, his players just can't put up with his "intensity." Now this might not hold true in the college ranks, where players only have 4 years that they have to put up with a coach.

Again, before I get jumped on - I have read where the players don't seem to have a problem with his personality. I'll just add one word to that last sentence - "yet."

Mike Keenan!!?!!!!??!!? I didn't realize Caruso was that much of a douche! 8-) If that is an appropriate comparison, UST players shouldn't be too surprised when Caruso fills out transfer applications for them behind their backs. They could be an admitted Auggie before they even know what hit them!!

All three on staff would have to be a Grant choice wouldn't it?

I wonder if Fasching would take the same job for a new coach. All that loyalty, etc, he has shown over the years... he would feel pretty burned. Plus, he was probably very strong on the recruiting ideas.  And it's likely all of his good ideas would be taken up even though he didn't get the job. That would burn me quite a bit, even if I was given more money.  Fasching may be a one year and done agreement from his perspective.

And Rambler... "First prize? This set if steak knives. Second prize? You get to keep your job."  I don't know. It's a bit to swallow. "We thought you were good enough for second place," is a pretty disappointing answer to hear.  If I got to the short list for a job I would be all or nothing at that point. Reporting to the guy that beat me would slowly wear me down as I agonized over his every little mistake. Chuffed every time he overruled me.

So, I'm not saying there won't be an "all three get a job deal" but I am saying I wouldn't take it. I wouldn't be effective or last in that position.

The thing about a Grant hire is that Saint John's would only be expecting 5-10 years out of him (he'd be in his mid 60s if he coached 10 years). The elder Grant coached the Vikings until he was 58 before hanging it up.

Dear Oz,

Since the world is supposed to end tomorrow, and you'll be in tomorrow while we are still in today, maybe you can give us a heads up on what's happening so we can have a few Hamm's before tomorrow gets here.

Thanks, and good luck.

BDB

I forgot to bring my EA's Christmas present into work with me this morning.  The end of the world takes the form of asking Mrs Oz to swing by the city and drop off the gift.  I've seen this wrath before and lived through it so I think we'll be good.  Battered, but alive.

Good God, she just called to say she's on the way in. I wish the world had ended. Whew.

Speaking of age, Jerry Haugen has got to be close to 60 according to my math. (Assuming he was 22 years old at the time he graduated from SJU in '76, he's 58 +/- a year.)

Weren't there people saying that Jerry would step away from football once John was finished? Or am I just seeing/hearing what I want to?

If so, it sets up the scenario of having all three finalists on staff. Grant at the helm for 5-10 years, leaving Ramler and Fasching to step up after that.

Maybe you guys have this head coaching thing mixed up a bit considering you haven't hired one in 60 years. 5-10 years is pretty normal tenure isn't it?

Of course, my squad is on it's 4th head coach in a decade, so that's the other side of the coin.

Channeling Dave Deland's article from this morning?  Ramler didn't flat out turn down the ideaof taking an assistant's position in the Q and A published in the Daily Planet but I think Oz has a point.  Gary would be more likely to stay on I think, and his relationships with high school coaches would be useful (Grant's never recruited, at least openly, and I have no idea if he's popular with other MN high school coaches).

These days, everyone needs a good background check, but less is known about Ramler than the other two.

This scenario has been hypothesized here Sam. Like Oz, I don't know if the chemistry would work or not. This thing about Gary is that he has roots in the St. Cloud area with kids in school,etc... it would be hard for him to pick up & leave.Grant has a good gig at EP, so there is no way he is coming to SJU unless he is named head coach & he feels the university is working with him. Ramler,if not hired at SJU, certainly could be a candidate at St. Olaf. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out in the end.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

And it's not just a matter of will the two not picked accept a secondary position, but also will the winner accept the other two.

Anyway, on to 105 and the originally very popular Dec 21.

SJURube has that date already, unfortunately.  He picked it about four hours ago.

All dates in Jan are still open except for the 3rd, 7th and 11th.

Mike and Gary have known each over 30 years.  Ramler was on Mike' EP staff and on the SJU staff w/ Fasching.  All three have one ultimate goal of restoring SJU to prominance and dominance in the MIAC and at the national level.  Go back to the Prep Bowl Championship game in November...Ramler was on Grant's sideline.  Since then I've kind of sensed something has been in the works.
