Merry Christmas everyone, enjoy the best of days.  And to think the Johnnies get a new coach tomorrow!
Everyday is payday in paradise.

Merry Christmas to all! My stocking was missing a coach, bet I get that by the end of the week.
Lots of storylines for next year-should be the most exciting MIAC football season in a decade.  :)

Christmas in Australia. I miss the snow a bit but it's pretty easy getting used to this.

The clock is ticking on the administration & the background checking of potential new coach at SJU

Does anyone know the status of the St. Olaf coaching search or are they going to promote from within?

Wouldn't the background check rule out Fasching...after all he's been on the staff for years.  Why would he need a background check?

Why can UMD hire a coach in one day?  Because they're a state run school?

Was Nielson still the AD? Might have had something to do with it. Plus it was an internal hire, perhaps with only one candidate. (Have to assume they talked to Glenn Caruso and he expressed a lack of interest.)

Often a state school has to do this sort of thing as an internal hire, then formally open the position again in the offseason for a full go-round because of hiring rules.

I can understand the Kabuki Dance (sort of) but before you name finalists wouldn't you want to do a background check?
Could it be the "background" check is another way to buy some time for other behind the scenes things that we will never know about?  Just a thought........

Ever since the George O'Leary fiasco at Notre Dame, all Catholic schools are required to do extensive background checks on new athletic hires, per papal decree.

Nope, they hired a new AD at the same time...

My guess for a date was the last week of Jan.  Maybe the second last week if they are speedy. I reckon there are maybe two more interviews after they get to a single candidate.  And since there are no rumors going about on who is in and who isn't, I reckon the candidates themselves don't know and there could still be three more interviews.

Unless there is a known and well prepared successor then an exec hire like this will take months if done properly, I say.  How big is the football budget and how demanding are the candidates for certain commitments?  Who knows?  Maybe the school is running around trying to get big supporter commitments to back up the demands of the candidates.

This may very well be to the core of what is going on. If UST has "X" amount of full time assistant coaches the new coach (or all 3 finalists) may have indicated that to be competitive on a national stage they need more full time coaches. The university may have said there is  only so much money available for coaching staff but if Tom Stock can get commitments from a few select "football boosters" to take care of expenses this may be what is occurring right now. Secure a new coach & the basic resources to hit the ground running- I'm sure the budget for recruiting has to increase- then build an organization "SJU Football Booster Club" for future expenses.
