Was Nielson still the AD? Might have had something to do with it. Plus it was an internal hire, perhaps with only one candidate. (Have to assume they talked to Glenn Caruso and he expressed a lack of interest.)

Often a state school has to do this sort of thing as an internal hire, then formally open the position again in the offseason for a full go-round because of hiring rules.
Nope, they hired a new AD at the same time...

I think that Pat might have been asking if he was still the AD at the end of his coaching tenure, to which the answer is yes.

I could be wrong, here's the article again.  http://www.umdbulldogs.com/teams-football.php
The AD is interm and the Chancelor hired the coach....

Who knows?  Maybe the school is running around trying to get big supporter commitments to back up the demands of the candidates.

This may very well be to the core of what is going on. If UST has "X" amount of full time assistant coaches the new coach (or all 3 finalists) may have indicated that to be competitive on a national stage they need more full time coaches. The university may have said there is  only so much money available for coaching staff but if Tom Stock can get commitments from a few select "football boosters" to take care of expenses this may be what is occurring right now. Secure a new coach & the basic resources to hit the ground running- I'm sure the budget for recruiting has to increase- then build an organization "SJU Football Booster Club" for future expenses.

Sounds like we don't have the "big boosters" on the board then, or some would have spilled the beans by now. Or, are you trying to tell us something 105? ;)

I reckon it's just a really important decision that is being treated with great care. Living legends are rarely replaced and even more rarely replaced well.

Frank tweeted a serious of tweets last evening that indicated he had contacted the three finalists.

(My paraphrase)

Ramler: "No comment one way or the other.'
Fasching:  "I have not been contacted."
Grant: "Sounds like they are on track, but other than that, no comment."

Read into that what you will...

Frank tweeted again a few minutes ago saying it is "highly unlikely there will be an announcement of a new SJU football coach today."  Doh!

I highly doubt UMD looked beyond Weiss for the HC job.  UMD's offense was amazing under his guidance.

The clock is ticking on the administration & the background checking of potential new coach at SJU

Does anyone know the status of the St. Olaf coaching search or are they going to promote from within?

Wouldn't the background check rule out Fasching...after all he's been on the staff for years.  Why would he need a background check?

Why can UMD hire a coach in one day?  Because they're a state run school?
I can understand the Kabuki Dance (sort of) but before you name finalists wouldn't you want to do a background check?
Could it be the "background" check is another way to buy some time for other behind the scenes things that we will never know about?  Just a thought........

You may be on to something here.  If the list is down to a handful they may indeed be doing backround checks to see if they even want to complete and take the time to interview them.  I don't think they want any little thing to throw them off and have to reopen a search at the eleventh hour.

All three have gone through multiple interviews already.

I really hope SJU does what they said they would and make an announcement tomorrow because I am really getting sick of all the speculation and waiting.  :-\

I'm thinking even if there is an offer made this week, it could be a few more days before the negotiation period (for salary, coaching staff, etc) runs its course and the paperwork is complete.
Throwing the holidays in the mix only adds complexity to the task.

My January 7 pick is looking better and better. :)

And then, once all of the negotiating and paperwork is complete, the public relations folks at SJU are going to have to set up the fireworks, smoke and laser light show to introduce Grant as the Head Coach, Ramler as the Offensive Coordinator and Fasching as the Defensive Coordinator.

Tweet from: Patrick Reusse‏@1500ESPN_Reusse
"Johnnies dream team: Grant as head coach, Fasching as DC, Ramler as OC. Can they make it happen? Probably not."
