Furthermore, Caruso and his staff appear to have a better overall strategy in place to not only recruit, but also more importantly in my opinion, assess and develop talent that will flourish at the college level.

On what basis can you draw that conclusion?  Fasching has only had the job for two weeks and his staff was announced just two days ago.  I can certainly see that you hope that's true.  But that's all it is.  A hope.

Is there a lot that Fasching is going to differently now that John isn't in his way?  Has he been holding back the key to player development these last five years, just so he can use it when he became head coach?  Was John doing something that was holding back full player development?

I see Ramler making a difference in this department, but it's unclear to what extent - if he gets the same guys to come to SJU as he did Carleton, than not so much, if better kids than yes.

I can certainly see that you hope this staff works out, but that's all it is......a hope.

The much more interesting question is what will Caruso say when he runs into Ramler and/or Dumonceaux in all those metro area high schools he has basically owned for the past several years.  I would love to be there for those awkward meetings.

Hmm...don't forget that Caruso has 5 other coaches who have recruiting responsibilities (Kuchinski, Walch, Anderson, Lepsche, and Hollway) and 12 coaches overall on his staff.  Unless some of the other guys on SJU's staff drop their other coaching responsibilities, I still believe they will be out-recruited.  Lest we forget, Dumonceaux is a track coach as well.  I’m not sure how much time he’ll devote to recruiting considering the fact that the indoor track season just started this past week.

Furthermore, Caruso and his staff appear to have a better overall strategy in place to not only recruit, but also more importantly in my opinion, assess and develop talent that will flourish at the college level.

All I'm gonna say to this is that the giant has awoke....

Ironic you'd use that phrase in reference to SJU because that has often been said in reference to the Tommie uprising. We'll let you go with it, but will say, show us...don't tell us!
O.K. we'll let you keep your trade marked "Giant" statement.  All I'm gonna say is that the echos have awoke...

P.S. Big brother ND, the user fee check is in the mail. 8-)

If Gary could've gone over John's head to implement sweeping changes, he would've been the most powerful non-coordinator assistant coach in the history of the world. Also, this notion that Gary was assuming—up to or beyond the past five years—that he was going to be the next head coach and therefore deliberately withheld information is laughable, even for a Tommie to entertain. I'm sure he made many suggestions over the years. Some of those suggestions may have been adopted, many were probably were not. At the end of the day, Gary had to work within the confines of John's system, which at times was very rigid.

As for Ramler's career at Carleton, you're conveniently ignoring the fact that he got better recruits than the coaches that preceded him, which is amazing in my view considering he couldn't even talk to kids that had an ACT composite score under 29, and a high school GPA under 3.60. Even then, the fact that the annual price tag at Carleton is mid-$50K is yet another tremendous hurdle to clear in order to bring a kid onboard.

It takes that many people to convince kids that U$T is a good choice!  :o

Growing up in the St. Joe area myself, I'd say UST is the better choice.  ;)

Respectfully disagree...I live in and love Saint Paul but really don't see a Saint Paul kid would go to U$T.  Go somewhere and get away from mommy and daddy for little while.

UST is killing SJU in hoops right now on channel 45.  UST on WCCO radio in football and KSTC for basketball.  Wow.  I would be happy for a horrible, student-produced webcast of SJU football.

You're overlooking UST's greatest recruiting advantage over SJU.  Caruso doesn't have to sell a sow's ear as a silk purse.

So how many D3 programs pay for a 2 hour TV infomercial?  Is this really what D3 is suppose to be about?  As much as I'd like to see SJU webcast a football game the whole U$T basketball broadcast on Ch. 45 was a little over the top?  Why not just join the Big 10 Network?

Is UST paying for Ch. 45 coverage?  I was told that the coverage and further packages that will be rolled out were part of donations made by Stanley Hubbard, a long-time UST Board of Trustees member.

I would rather not watch what SJU put out there in football or basketball this year. But maybe next year.

So, U$T football players carry purses?  I can't say it really surprises me.  :D

Mr. Oz, you've played the hope game a lot on these boards.  Sorry if this comes off as brash, but you "hope" that Caruso will go to a D1 program.  You "hope" that Fasching will turn around the SJU program. And, now, you "hope" that Ramler will come in and out-recruit Caruso and his staff.  On what basis are you drawing these conclusions?

I think my argument is reasonable based on what we've seen over the past few years. Wasn't Fasching the recruiting coordinator for several years?  Did he not just say in his own words that he had several of UST's freshmen in his office but could not close the deal? Thus, couldn't a reasonable person based on all available facts come to the conclusion that maybe the strategy that has been in place might be flawed?  It's not an outrageous assertion, just an observation based on what we've seen over the past few years.  The MIAC has changed, but it appears that Fasching and people within the organization have not (lets face it, other than Ramler, the rest of the SJU staff is pretty much the same).

Understood.  But the same argument can be made for kids who grow up in the country...it's time to get away and see the world.  That's what I did.

Sorry, but what else do we have?  There's no guarantee that Gary and Kurt will right the SJU ship.  You can't tell me that anyone knew how successful Caruso would be at U$T.  I would imagine that not everyone was enthused when U$T hired a football coach from Macalaster.  We've got hope and faith that SJU can be back on top...soon.  As fans, there's not much more we can hang our hats on.
