Since we've been throwing around predictions on the board, I did a little research to see what some people were saying about Glenn Caruso after becoming HC in January 2008. No immediate reaction from Tommie posters (at least within 4 days of the hire, the board was back to talking about beer and ice fishing within 36 hours of Caruso being hired).

The boldest prediction coming from a non-Tommie:

I will be so bold to predict that UST will win a MIAC Championship before SJU does now that Caruso is in charge.

Top 3 coach in all of D3.

We'll see. I would now bet that UST wins a conference title before Mac gets back into the MIAC for football, however.

I also found this gem from when Roney resigned as head coach.*

M Grant was the other finalist 10 yrs ago, but his situation is such now that i'd be stunned to see him leave EPHS other than to retire. (not to mention the $$ cut)

I doubt Meidt will apply but he'd be an interesting choice... Ramler intrigues me greatly (he'd have UST going deeeeeeeeeep in playoffs in no time), but I dont see him applying either. Im sure UST will have plenty of quality candidates, as the job is a gold mine waiting to be taken.  I'm hoping its someone with college experience, at least as a coordinator, preferably on offense

*Sorry, if you're feeling picked on, Maniac. I know this is the second time this week that I've dug up a past quote from you. But, you'd have to admit, it was just too juicy to pass up.
Sing us a song, you're the piano man

Don't worry about Maniac.  I'm sure he's still celebrating the beat down administered this past Saturday.  Testament to how hoops is not even considered a rivalry at this point is the fact that there is not one post from either side on the hoops board subsequent that exhibition talking about the game.  Only posts are reviews of the Tommy infomercial that aired on KSTC.

I don't like basketball, but being that the game was on TV, I flipped it on for brief periods.  Jesus, that was an uneven match-up!

What was with the pre-game dance-circle thing that both teams did?  Is that a b-ball tradition?    ::)

That's one of many things I can't stand about the basketball subculture. I don't understand it either.

It should probably be mentioned that St. Ben's defeated the Tommies in basketball on Saturday in St. Joe. ;D
And speaking of ice fishing, we are about a month away from the 34th annual International Eelpout Extravaganza in Walker the weekend of February 15 and the companion event my brothers host at the Shamrock Lodge and Club Kego on Kego Lake in Longville. A wonderful weekend to be on Leech and Kego Lakes and to party like there is no tomorrow. Always nice to see the Bikini Ice Fishing Team on Leech Lake on Saturday. :o Go to www.eelpoutfestival.com to see what it is all about.

Agreed.  Done at all levels of college and pros.  Haven't been to a HS game in a long time, I assume they do it as well.

Most football teams now do a very similar thing as well.  Just not as noticeable as it's off in the corner in a much bigger space.

Given the fit that John threw when we tried to hold hands in our defensive huddle, I can only imagine what he'd have to say about that!  ;)

The basketball circle thing has been around for a couple of decades at least now, it is no different than football teams circling up after team warmups right before the game and doing the pride or defense or whatever thing.  It is supposed to be some sort of team building and getting fired up to play thing.  Personally I always thought that pep talks and displays like this were kind of stupid and over-rated.  You are either fired up to play or you are not.

You're correct on that one. The silly, choreographed dances are found at even the smallest high schools in rural Minnesota.
And, since I saw them at a Saint John's Prep vs. Royalton game a few weeks ago, I can only assume it's even worse at larger schools.

Fair words from Keith today:

"Across the field, national observers were introduced to Glenn Caruso, the St. Thomas coach who is comfortable singing, crying or getting in the face of an official. He wears his passion on his sleeve, and players respond to it. More than one of the Tommies' stars said they picked UST because of Caruso, when the program was building and there was no reason to believe a Stagg Bowl would come so soon. Not everyone liked Caruso's use of a late timeout in Salem when the game was out of reach, when he huddled his entire team for a talk. But to hear his men say they love each other, to refer to their teammates as family members, and to listen to coaches and parents who have no connection to St. Thomas praise the man -- He's doing something right."
The last shall be first and the shall be.......

I've seen the Johnnies do it, but in a tunnel where no one could see them.  And, it was a player in the middle doing the talking, not a coach.  Unlike some other MIAC schools who like to do so in the open with the head coach in the middle.

That shows you exactly how much pumpkin-pushing that I watch!  ;D

Seriously,  I would be embarassed to be involved--just go out there and play.  God, I'm starting to sound like a cranky, old fart!

Doney,

Funny that you would be the first predicting the demise of U$T.

So, basically, Caruso is a Steve Johnson/John Gagliardi combo.  He preaches love and passion, but isn't afraid to chew an official's ass.  ;D
