I've been checking out the Tommies  football coaching staff and find that they have an excellent staff.  Why don't we hear more about the assistant coaches?  All the attention seems to be focused on the head coach.

Any thoughts?

Do you suppose that any part of being a good coach is building a good coaching staff? Do you think there are any young coaches out there who see benefit in learning under a 3 time national coach of the year? Come on, man! Caruso is a stud anyway you slice it-perhaps that's why what you've been "checking out" seems to be directed towards him. Not that it is a slight to ANY of his assistants, but when warranted the hc takes the brunt of the criticism & the glory of the praise.

Mr. Hubble says that trophies are for people with self-esteem issues.

Is that right? So those National Championship trophies in Collegeville mean nothing, right? :o

National Championship trophies are different than subjective awards.
I've just never been a fan of "Coach of the Year" awards.  I'd rather have my team win a National Championship than an individual get recognized.  John Gagliardi won this award in 2007 with a team that went 10-2 and lost to Coe in the second round of the playoffs by a score of 37-7.  I thought it was kind of silly that he "won" the award with a team that came up short.

If I had to pick a coach of the year in the MIAC this year it would probably be coach Haege at Augsburg.  No offense to Caruso but he should be winning at UST.  To me the coach that deserves to be honored is the coach that does more with less.

"National Championship trophies are different than subjective awards." No disputing that, but it doesn't mean that being honored by your peers as a coach of the year (3 consecutive years no less) is not something to be proud of. For the record, we like those MIAC trophies too-hoping to add a Nat'l trophy soon! You said "Trophies", not "subjective award" trophies.

As for the Haege comment, no disrespect meant here, but you can have him. We'll take Caruso seven days a week and twice on Sunday.

Let's call a spade a spade, you boys dislike GC and all things Caruso because of where he is and what he's doing. If he was at the helm of the Johns he'd be the second coming. I get it. Despite all the bitterness towards him, the guy is a hell of a coach and unfortunately (for you) you fellas aren't going to take away from that. Cheers, Faunch! ;)

By the way he was quoting "Mr Hubble. "Who's Mr Hubble?" you (and Aaron Rodgers) might ask.

Saw that, thanks. Personally I thought it better attributed to Mr. Wopsle or Mr. Trabb, but pota(y)toes/potatoes!

I was just having a little fun with the State Farm ad and yes I was pretty well aware that SJU has few trophies in the cabinet as well.  In fact I hear one of them is named after a former coach at SJU.  How serious of a self-esteem issue would Mr. Hubble think that guy has?
BTW...think any Packer rubes canceled their State Farm policies over that ad?

I don't believe any of my comments were intended to cast any aspersions on Coach C.  He's someone I've had a number of conversations with over the past couple of years.
That said I don't always agree with everything he does but I think that can be said of other people I know as well.

In actuality the SJU faithful could accuse me of sacrilege for suggesting that John wasn't deserving of his 2007 award.  Quite honestly there have been times over the years I've felt SJU overdid the hype in regards to John.

Is it possible that I could get excommunicated for that?

"I'm a uniter...not a divider."

I don't think it is serious enough to warrant excommunication.  But, I would not be surprised if there were fines and suspensions.

The guy that is not overhyped and should win the award almost every year is Larry Kehres.

Did anyone ever validate the existence of Stanley Blackburn or was he a figment of Marty O'Neil & Wally Carbo's collective imaginations  ???
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Glad to see I hit a raw nerve this off season.  I agree that Glen is a very good coach, even if some of his tactics are somewhat annoying.

That said can we at least publish a list of the STU asst. football coaches names right here and give them a shoutout

Google Wallie Kuchinski.

Also stories leading up to stagg bowl featured quotes from assistants. I can specifically recall the oline coach being highlighted in a feature on UST wanting to be "O-Line U."

I'd guess the press on Caruso is by design. Not sure his assistants care to be in the spot light. To make matters worse/better, Caruso is obnoxiously smooth. The guy has a promising career in Hollywood screen play writing after coaching.

What can't that man do?  He's a virtual messiah!  It's a damn shame that Andrew Wiles came along with a proof to Fermat's Last Theorem which had stood for 358 as history's most difficult mathematical problem.  Actually, it's probably lucky for UST, otherwise Caruso may have chosen a different, even more messianic, career path.

Yeah, who does he think he is, Barack Obama?

San Francisce 34 - Ravens 20.

I was toying with erasing the last post, but all I can say is my record is still intact. One could make a lot of money betting against my picks.

Your Caps going to turn things around this short season?

They need to get it in gear. My only hope is that they are having a bit of an identity crisis because of the style that Oates is trying to instill, and it's difference from last year's style. That, and the fact that Brooks Laich, who I think, is vastly under rated as an all around player, could make a big difference when he returns from injury, which looks like it could be this week.

Yea, It's tough to install a new style during an abbreviated season...especially when there was little to no preseason.

I think that's why the Hawks are having success, they have the same players and scheme as last season (more or less).

The Johnnie football schedule is out according to Frank Rajkowski.  We open at River Falls.  Nice.  No Crown or Northwestern.

EDIT:  A post at gojohnnies.com.  We've got River Falls and Eau Claire.  The aggressive opening is good to see.  The Tommies are week three and closing the season against Bethel.  Whew.

New Saint John's University head football coach Gary Fasching and the Johnnies will open the 2013 season with a 7 p.m. game Friday, Sept. 6, at Wisconsin-River Falls.

SJU returns home to host Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Saturday, Sept. 14, and begins the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) schedule at St. Thomas Sept. 21.

Four more opponents visit Collegeville, including Concordia-Moorhead for Homecoming Sept. 28 and Augsburg for Family Weekend Oct. 12. The Homecoming game is the first for SJU against the Cobbers since Oct. 13, 1984 (W, 13-9).

The Johnnies end the 2013 regular season with back-to-back home games against Hamline (Nov. 9) and Bethel (Nov. 16).

The season opener at River Falls is the first Friday-night game, at an on-campus stadium, since Oct. 1, 1965, at St. Thomas. An estimated crowd of 6,100 spectators witnessed the Johnnies earn a 10-0 shutout of the Tommies at O'Shaughnessy Stadium en route to a perfect 11-0 record and the program's second national championship.

The schedule is posted here.
