In wrestling news, the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers won the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Dual Championship on Saturday, avenging their two losses from earlier in the season.  They really are peaking at the right time.  In the semifinal match, the Gophers defeated the University of Iowa 22-15 (Iowa beat MN 16-15 on tiebreaker criteria on January 26).  In the final match, the Gophers trounced Oklahoma State University 28-9 (OK State beat MN 22-15 on December 2).

Go Gophers!
Why isn't the dual meet champ the official NCAA champ?  Do we give extra gold medals to the country with the best overall score in individual events?

It's just the way it is, AO.

A tradition unrivaled...

The NCAA does not award a "true team" championship in wrestling.  The national champion is determined based on a point system at the championship.  Minnesota was done this way until the late 70's.  In theory, you could have a team with only 3 guys on the team win the championship if all 3 were individual champions.  We hated this at Anoka.  We always had team that were balanced and very strong at all weights.  We just didn't have 2 or 3 guys that won the championship.

MN has 2-3 legit title contenders this year (Ness, Storley, Nelson), but Penn State has a "tournament team" that is tough to trump.

Frank Rajkowski tweets that:
QuoteThe #sjufootball team will travel to Regina, Saskatchewan on May 17-19 for a pair of controlled scrimmages with the Regina Thunder...a junior football team.  The trip allows the team 10 padded practices in addition to the seven non-padded spring workouts allowed in the MIAC.

That should be reassuring to anyone concerned that Fasching wouldn't be making changes to the program.

Like track and Windom -- aka Heather Van Norman -- winning state titles in the 1980s.

Here's something that would never happen if John were still coach:  http://www.gojohnnies.com/news/2013/2/25/FOOTBALL_0225133014.aspx
I think this is a great opportunity for team.
They need to do something like this to "turn the corner" so to speak with the new staff to try new ideas in a controlled environment.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Any of you Tommies out there reassured?  8-)

Are other d3 teams making the trip to Canadia on a tri-annual basis?  If not, then this is the start of good business for the Canadian junior leagues.  Maybe the Mexican leagues for our southern d3 brethren.  You would expect ADs to be scouring the rulebook for extra-practice regulations to sustain this every year.

EDIT: I did a little research on the Thunder and this will be no pushover scrimmage.  This is their nose tackle, Sheldon "The Sasquatch" Whalen:

[And Hockey...don't forget Hockey!!! My Ducks are doing well ( okay, not tonight! 57's Avs are ahead right now), but my Blue Jackets have been ... struggling!  ::)

Not a puck guy myself, but someone should mention SJU is in the finals for the MIAC automatic bid for hockey.  GAC knocked off the one seed, UST, so SJU will get a home game.

Mighty long drive to go Squatchin'.  The story says the Johnnies will make an "11 hour trip."  Does this mean they are bussing it up there?  Holy crap!!

Anybody know anything about the Gallbladder or Gall Stones?  I'm scheduled for an ultrasound tomorrow to see if that's what's giving me this pain under my rib cage and in my back.

My son had his gallbladder removed at 14.  It's done lathroscopicly, so recovery is pretty quick.  Good luck.

I know that women try to claim that child birth is just as painful as passing a kidney stone.  Pffffft.  As if.

EDIT:  Good golly, this is a pic of gallstone from wikipedia.  Good luck, faunch.  I hope the treatment isn't too painful.
