New to the board... New to the MIAC... Nephew is a soon to be Cobber...After reading through earlier posts I've noticed a SJU and UST presence pretty heavily. Where's the love from the other MIAC schools???

Whats the outlook for next season... Spring Conditioning is coming up and next year will be here before we know it. Any predictions????

Welcome. We hope you enjoy it here.

The Cobbers do alright on the boards. There are two or three regular posters but you won't see them until the season starts. Most of the off season is filled with Johnnie diehards and Tommie wannabes.

WHITE SMOKE!

just before it, I got a call from Rome...I was turned down as "over qualified"...so no Pope Tommie I

I have heard from inside sources that the first four votes were deadlocked and no consensus was close to forming. We were looking at a two or maybe even three week conclave until the Argentinian stood and loudly pronounced, "Tommie suck!"  Soon after a unanimous vote bar one (poor 96 year old Cardinal Popesicola the Enfeebled is a bit hard of hearing) elected the new Pope.

Or at least that's what I heard.

I heard he was initially going to say "Johnies rule," but changed course after realizing that outside Stearns County and a few tired Metro-area sports bars few people would know who he was talking about.

FearTheEar

Thanks for the welcome. I think this might be a better waste of time to my workday then the NSIC boards I was badgering.

Im all about the off-season topics that really shouldn't matter....like.... Who has the best jerseys in the MIAC?

well played Oz.....but the Argentine actually said "Tommies Rule" but the dumb Benedictine translator misspoke with the untrue vulgarism but all the cardinals understood the Spanish and ignored the translation

Hopefully many of you have received the special edition of the Saint John's Magazine on coach Gagliardi. A very great read and so much history about John. Nice articles by Fr. Wilfred Theisen, Austin Murphy and Mark Dienhart.

I have been looking in the mailbox the last few days and have yet to see my copy of this magazine ;).

There you go FearTheEar; a non Johnnie-Tommie post.

Duff,
Summit Maibock is listed as one of the best spring beers of the year. As the boards unquestioned leading authority, I think you should rate it for us.  :)
How about rating all ten while you are at it?  ;)

Sad to say I haven't tried any of their top ten!  :'(  I may be kicked out of MN for saying this, but I really am not a Summit fan.  I can't put my finger on it, but there is just an aftertaste to all of their beers that I have tried that I just can't get past.

Also sad to say, but my beer consumption has also taken a nosedive.  Being a responsible parent, weight loss...these things drastically affect one's beer intake.  :o  Although, I can say that I catch a buzz much easier nowadays!

So, a Jesuit.  Our first non-Catholic Pope.    (I'll be here all week, folks.)

I know you are joking tmert, but would someone explain, if it's easily explainable, the difference between Benedictine and Jesuit?

I don't know how much this helps, but I was curious, too.  Being a Johnnie, I was only familiar with the Benedictines.

QuoteBenedictine monks live their motto of "Ora et Labora" in that they spend a good part of the day singing the Lord's praises in the Liturgy of the Hours or the Divine Office as it is traditionally known. They also work to support themselves either by manual labor or through teaching. They also spend time each day in "Lectio Divina" (divine reading) which is a way of seeking union with God by reading Scripture (mostly Scripture) and allowing Scripture to speak to them. This activity lies at the very heart of what it mean to be a Benedictine. The make one vow of Stability which binds them to one monastic community and the conversion of their ways which is a turning to a way of life that is immersed in God. The traditional vows of poverty, celibate chastity and obedience are included in this one commitment. Their whole way of life is dependent on the daily monastic structure which is punctuated by communal liturgical prayer and work.

Franciscans are not monks, but friars. They make the traditional three vows, but do not commit to one house of their order. They do live in community and engage daily in the Liturgy of the Hours, but their work is generally with the poor. Their distinct spirituality centers them around the poor Christ. As Friars Minor (little brothers), as they are called, they attempt to influence the world by their example of a life lived simply and completely for their crucified Lord. St. Francis is quoted as telling his friars to preach and if necessary to use words.

The Society of Jesus, which is the official name for the Jesuits differs greatly from the two religious families just mentioned. Unlike the monks and friars who live within a monastic framework, punctuated by the Liturgy of the Hours in common, Jesuits have an internal structure. Their monastery is in their heads, in a sense. They are free to live singly on in groups. It doesn't really matter. St. Ignatius deliberately designed his order to available at a moments notice to go where they are needed. He fashioned his order with a fourth vow to be at the complete disposal of the Church in the person of the pope. There are some Jesuits today who would like to dispute this and suggest that St. Ignatius only meant that they would go where needed. But history shows a much more generous gesture on the part of their founder. He was most loyal to the vicar of Christ on earth.

A tradition unrivaled...
